Re: [MBZ] El Capitan now whatever 10.6 was called
iMac tend to collect kruft that reduces cooling and leads to operational failures. I have acquired and revived a few by careful application of canned air after removing the coverings. The same overheat failures plague the laptops. To clear up drive issues, fully clean the guts of the iMac, then I would use the install disk to boot to disk utility. Repair permissions and check the surface. If that does not return errors, you can Carbon Copy clone the drive to the SSD or 4 Tb drive clay On Nov 11, 2015, at 7:54 AM, Rich Thomas via Mercedes wrote: > OK I got the SSD and replacement HD for my iMac, which I have been putting > off installing for a few days but I need to do that. Re: [MBZ] El Capitan now whatever 10.6 was called
iMacs are really intolerant of high temperatures. I swapped a hard drive in a 20" C2D iMac I had and the temperatures killed the new drive in a week. Your SSD should be fine. Load the OS to the SSD with the optical media. Apply whatever updates are necessary to get it as current (for that OS) as possible. Be absolutely sure you use the same naming convention for the machine and your account(s) in the new install. If you don't, you will have home folder and permission problems with stuff you restore from TimeMachine. If you want to avoid these potential issues, boot off the OS optical media and restore the old OS to the SSD. It's not as clean, but it will take you back to exactly where you were with your last backup. Re: [MBZ] El Capitan now whatever 10.6 was called
OK I got the SSD and replacement HD for my iMac, which I have been putting off installing for a few days but I need to do that. I want to put the OS (which will be 10.6.something as I have some apps that don't work with the later versions) on the SSD and then restore or transfer everything off the (possibly failing/overheating) original HD. I have a Time Machine backup drive. I have the original OS install DVD and a pointer to the updates (10.6.8?) so I can get that sorted out OK on the SSD. Any y'all have some detailed instructions on how to do the app/data transfer and set it up to boot off the SSD and see all the other stuff on the new HD? I found a few instructions on how to sorta do that but they did not entirely address my concerns and still seemed a bit vague. I think DPPoos had some instructions for when he did it? I am thinking that the overheating on the HD might be due to some schmutz in there clogging things up, so I will do a thorough cleaning too and then put the original HD in an external case so I will probably be able to pull stuff directly off it though I will also have the TM bkup. I got a new 4TB drive, wasn't that much more than a 1 or 2, and HGST Deskstar which seem to be the highest-rated HDs. --R On 11/11/15 10:42 AM, Jim Cathey via Mercedes wrote: What kind of ‘book?
