they can make it reboot automatically. Why the manual only, other
than to annoy?

The last times I installed 2000 and XP, the updates take a day and
several manual shutdown/restarts.  I believe MS does this
intentionally so that you get disgusted installing the "old" OS and
go out and buy the "new" OS, which is still only 2000 with all the
patches and a gussied up "new" interface.  (bloatware)

I did that experiment years ago when XP was new.

Clean installs of 2000 (near or at end of life) Wissta and XP
ran all the SPs and Updates until MS was happy.

Each HD had about the same amount of space used.  By now since 2000
and XP are dead and MS does not admit wissta ever existed, that a
fully patched Winder 10 will be bigger than fully patched XP, but I'd
bet it is nearly the same as a fully patched winders 8.1.

Sounds like M$ is playing the "frustrate you with winders 7 installs
so you go out and buy 10" game.

I just bought a Dell XP laptop for $40 to run my little laser burner
machine. I don't think I will be fooling with updates on it or
whatever, though I did have to find a driver to try to get the wireless
to talk to my router, which it now does but won't connect to wifi. I
think the new router language is beyond its kin.

I just back up the windows activation, format and install windows from a
slipstreamed
Win 7 CD, restore the activation, and selectively update with windows update,
downloading
most of the security patches and not much else. Then I have to install all my
drivers and
software.

[MBZ] Finished with updating Win7 laptop!

2015-08-25 Thread Craig via Mercedes
I finally got the laptop completely updated and I didn't even have to
reformat the disk and reinstall Win7!

I downloaded Microsoft Fixit from
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058 and ran it for a few hours.
It then stopped saying I should restart Windows Update.

I did so and Windows Update said it had 164 updates to install. It went
ahead and installed them without problem. After installation, the laptop
needed to be rebooted, so I told it to reboot. It took a long while to
shutdown because it needed to do things to the disk and it took a long
while to reboot for the same reason.

I re-ran Windows Update after it rebooted and found it had more things to
update. I had it do that and, of course, rebooted.

I again re-ran Windows Update after it rebooted and found it had more
things to update. I had it do that and, of course, rebooted yet again.

I again re-ran Windows Update after it rebooted again and found it had
more things to update. I had it do that and, of course, rebooted yet
another time.

And maybe a time more; I lost track.

I then did some disk cleanups. Oddly, I had LESS freespace on the disk
after some of those than I had before. The updates take about 5 Gigabytes
of disk space; a quarter of the 20 GB I had allocated to the C: drive.

Now I can install Garmin Express, the thing I started out to do!
