[MBZ] W108 heater o-rings
Good day, I'm in the middle of the nightmare of removing the heater core from my W108.068. This was prompted by the death of the fan motor. Since I'm in there and they're leaking a tad, I will be replacing the o-rings at the two valves. I gather it's 000-835-12-98 and 000-835-13-98 and that one or the other is NLA from MB. Does anyone have any leads on the substitute? I gather one or the other is an x-profile, which I'm betting is what's NLA. Appreciate any thoughts on the o-rings, cables, or any other aspect of this epic job. Use the threaded end of a spark plug (the end with the terminal for the spark plug wire) to thread into the valve cores to pull them out. -D > On Jul 11, 2023, at 4:52 PM, David Bruckmann via Mercedes > wrote: > > Good day, > > I'm in the middle of the nightmare of removing the heater core from my > W108.068. I’ve been fortunate whenever I’ve needed an O-ring to always get “close enough” with my harbor freight O-ring set. But don’t know about these and I’d find it hard to believe that set had something that was hard to find elsewhere. Take the o-rings you remove to the local bearing supply store, or a local auto parts store and match them up. Viton will work just fine. Of course they're metric, but you should be able to find something in the "majik boxes" at your local hardware store. The trouble is that the NLA rings are not o-rings, they are an x profile. Re: [MBZ] W108 heater o-rings
The only issue I see with this approach is true with any NLA parts. You have to assume they've been sitting on a shelf somewhere, maybe not properly stored. Now a hard part like a metal or plastic part might not matter, but something that's rubber will deteriorate over time no matter what. I would rather take on the added cost of buying a few (or many) for a few bucks to meet a minimum and get a new part rather than risk the possibility of getting something that might not be in good shape and won't last long. That and just throw the number into Google with the name "Mercedes". You'll get hits pretty much anywhere, including eBay. -D From: Mercedes on behalf of Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes Sent: Wednesday, July 12, 2023 2:25 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Cc: Andrew Strasfogel ; David Bruckmann Subject: Re: [MBZ] W108 heater o-rings Classic Center will provide parts numbers, which I then use on ebay to find NLA stuff. That complicates things. I seem to remember needing some of those for a waste oil furnace a friend was struggling with a few years ago, they are hard to find. Measure them and check with waste oil furnace manufacturers, you might get lucky — they are used to separate the oil and compressed air in the fuel nozzle assembly in the furnace.
