I don't think that the story is about the the April 12, 2012 fireball. That was

Hi,

I think the broadcast is an old one. The video is of the Mifflin fireball. The
story refers to the Wednesday night's fireball. Mifflin fell on a Wednesday.
The meteorite in the video resembles Mifflin. Therefor I believe that the story
is about Mifflin.

Dear Jim, Martin, Peter and all that asked about this. The videos aired on:

http://fox6now.com/2012/04/12/meteor-spotted/ and
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/cb-DykfH6bwtdtO/scientists_find_potential_meteorite/

ARE from the Mifflin event and have NOTHING to do with the 05SEP2012 event that
I posted about.
http://lunarmeteoritehunters.blogspot.jp/2012/09/mbiq-detects-michigan-indiana-meteor.html

News agencies grab at most anything to try to boost ratings OR they do not
event bother to make a few phone calls to verify things.

The 05SEP2012 event DID have one report of sonics and this event MAY have
produced meteorites?

Report:

and sight e-w white few seconds latter felt and heard explosion
bright white redwas a trail caught a glimpse fo somthing turned
watched it for a second it burnt out but then several seconds passed and heard
and felt a thunder

All other reports concerning this and other events can be viewed at:
http://thelatestworldwidemeteorreports.blogspot.jp/

If anyone cares to check the METLIST archives over a year ago I ased for help
in indexing videos of real events and video of fake or faked events; I never
received any comment on this list or offlist in anyone interested in helping.

Re: [meteorite-list] Some thoughts on find coords

2012-09-09 Thread cdtucson
Marc,
As a business owner it seems to me you are mainly obligated to satisfy your
customers needs. These are the folks paying you for your services. No one else.
And as such you might consider everything else secondary.
In order to be faithful to your customers the co-ords should be kept between
you and your customers.
A classic example was the Whetstone fall. U of A agreed to keep co-ords quiet
until the members of that exclusive group were done searching on their own.
To this very day I think the only reason outsiders know the location is
because Jack told people that he found 'Galleta Flats' in the same strewn field
as whetstone. And on that note. I was very active in following data that was
reported to the list. From the data given of it's trajectory, on a map I
tracked the material far more to the east of where it actually ended up being
found. I thought it should have landed east of the airport. Not west of it. I
suppose that was due to high wings but that data did get us all to the same
general area. Thank you to whomever it was that supplied that data to the
entire list free of charge.

 Marc Fries chief_scient...@galacticanalytics.com wrote:
 Greetings all

I've been talking with a few people about logging the Battle Mountain
meteorites, and I'd like to start some discussion on the topic of find
coordinates. This is NOT directed at any one person, but I would like to
editorialize a bit. I'm getting a lot of push-back about printing find
coordinates and I'd like to open the topic to general discussion.

Historically, the locations of found meteorites have been a closely
guarded secret. That made a lot of sense when meteorite hunting relied most
heavily on eyewitness reports. A hunter could easily put in many, many miles
of walking before coming across a meteorite. For finds that are made with
weather radar, however, I don't think its the same situation. When I post
radar analyses, it is like posting a treasure map that says, Go Here. At
that point everyone knows where the meteorites are, and it seems to me that
the locations of individual stones aren't nearly as important as they were in
the past. (Strewn fields without detailed radar data are another matter, of
course.) Where those locations do matter are to A) the science behind
describing the meteorite fall, and B) the value of the individual meteorite
since a well-documented meteorite should be worth more than a random stone
 from a given fall.

I am a scientist, and my first instinct is to collect, analyze, and
-share- data. I understand where that is at odds with the level of secrecy
needed in the past, but I think that that level of secrecy is no longer
needed and actually works contrary to the value of meteorites, both monetary
and scientific. On the Galactic Analytics website, I'm willing to go against
my better instincts and hide find locations, at least until a scientific
paper is released describing the fall. But to be honest, I think that's a
little silly - I'll basically have a table showing meteorites with the find
locations redacted, and then you can scroll down the page a bit and see a map
 showing where the meteorites are.

So let me throw this out there as a general question - is it really
important to hide the find locations?

 Cheers,
 Marc Fries

[meteorite-list] AD: Gibeon Anvil Slices, update and new photos

2012-09-09 Thread Steve Arnold
Hey List,

Just a quick notice, I do have a few more Gibeon Anvil slices up for
sale at the $499 sale price (marked down from $900). I was able to
re-polish them, re-etch them, get the acid in the cavities (squished
regmaglypts) neutralized this time around, so it would stop over
etching after I wanted it to stop. And these look AMAZING now. 100%
improvement. They even took fairly good photos. But like most irons,
they still look better in your hand as you can turn them to capture the
light just right with them.

Here are the new photos:

http://s361.photobucket.com/albums/oo52/stevearnoldpmh/Gibeon%20Anvil%20Slices/

I also have what I feel is the best one remaining out of the batch up
on Ebay on a 3 day sale here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=320979330044ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT

For those not aware, the story of this specimen was written up in the
current issue of Meteorite Magazine and you can go back into the
archives and read my comments about this unique piece.

Folks, this is a killer price. Grab one of these before they all get
turned into knife blades!

[meteorite-list] Battle Mountain

2012-09-09 Thread wahlperry

Hi List,

I just wanted to give an update on my experience in Battle Mountain and
squelch any rumors that may be out there. Many of you read about my
encounter with a young miner whom agreed to exchange find information
with me as well as sell me the meteorite that he had found. This miner
is now out of jail and is back in the area working.

I want to make it very clear that it was never my intention to see
him get into trouble. After realizing that I had been lied to, etc.. I
just wanted my hangun back. I had no real hard feelings, I just felt
since he tricked me I should ask for my gun back.

I don't think that this young man realizes that he
would have been caught one way or the other for posession of a firearm.
You see, once I had turned in my Blue Card and the exchange of
ownership information (which he signed and provided his legal name,
address, etc) the authorities would have discovered the fact that he is
a felon and not allowed to own a firearm. Did he really think that the
authorities would let him own a handgun? This man came across as a
genuinely nice honest person. I believed him when he told me he would
show me where the meteorite fell, that he found it the night of the
fall and that he had the meteorite in a safety deposit box. As it
turned out, everything he told me was not true. He had already sold the
meteorite to another hunter, he had told the other hunter the true find
location and he did not discover the stone the night of the fall. It
wasn't until another hunter trained him what to look for that he
discovered it. It is still a spectacular meteorite and I do not want to
take anything away from this beautiful specimen.

I just want to make it clear that I had no idea that he was a felon and
was tricking me. If he simply would have declined to exchange the
handgun as part of the deal he never would have ended up in trouble. Of
course, he would have still been lying to me about everything else. I
still am having a hard time understanding why a certain meteorite
hunter who is a member of a respected meteorite collectors group would
stand up for this young man and feel that he should have been able to
keep the gun. I still don't know how else this could have been handled.
Perhaps he didn't take the time to get all of the facts.

So for those who are or will be out in the field hunting for the Battle
Mountain meteorite do not be duped by strangers in the field. Although I
am certain that there are plenty of good people out there in the field.
In my opinion there are also a few who may not be as honest.

Below are links to some articles I found on the man in question.

[meteorite-list] First Image From Curiosity's Arm Camera With Dust Cover Open

2012-09-09 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/msl/multimedia/pia16130.html

First Image From Curiosity's Arm Camera With Dust Cover Open
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
September 8, 2012

The reclosable dust cover on Curiosity's Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI)
was opened for the first time during the 33rd Martian day, or sol, of
the rover's mission on Mars (Sept. 8, 2012), enabling MAHLI to take
this image.

The level of detail apparent in the image shows that haziness in earlier
MAHLI images since landing was due to dust that had settled on the dust
cover during the landing.

The patch of ground shown is about 34 inches (86 centimeters) across.
The size of the largest pebble, near the bottom of the image, is about
3 inches (8 centimeters). Notice that the ground immediately around
that pebble has less dust visible (more gravel exposed) than in other
parts of the image. The presence of the pebble may have affected the
wind in a way that preferentially removes dust from the surface around
it.

Re: [meteorite-list] Fw: Battle Mountain

2012-09-09 Thread Sean T. Murray
Dave is having issues posting to the list, and asked if I would submit this
link to his trip report I created on his Website:

http://www.fallingrocks.com/battlemountain.htm

I compressed the images so that the page should load quickly. Let me know
if you have any issues viewing the page.

[meteorite-list] Battle Mountain

2012-09-09 Thread Paul Gessler

Battle Mountain:

According to local legends the name stems from confrontations between
native Americans and early settlers during the 1850s and 60s.

I guess this place remains no stranger to confrontation.

Congrats on the third stone.
