Re: [meteorite-list] Donation to West, TX disaster relief
Howdy all My apologies for the delay in sending this off; I moved across country and it took me a few days to get myself situated. But I am humbled and pleased to announce that a check just went out to the West, TX Volunteer Fire Department for a four-figure sum. Thank you all for donating! It is my supreme pleasure to work with all of y'all, and I'm sure that the West VFD will put the donation to good use in their disaster relief efforts. The following note went out with the donation: --- To the West, TX Volunteer Fire Department and the people of West, This donation comes from “passing the hat” among meteorite “hunters”, hobbyists and scientists. Many of us visited your town after the West, TX fireball in February of 2009, and we have fond memories of our time in your community. We recall the enthusiasm and welcoming friendliness of your town, and our hearts were broken to hear of your recent misfortunes. We hope that this donation will help your community to move forward. Good luck to you all. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Those of us in the meteorite “hunter”/hobbyist/scientist community --- On Apr 20, 2013, at 7:50 PM, Marc Fries wrote: > Howdy all > > A fire and explosion occurred at a fertilizer plant in West, Texas on > Wednesday (17 April 2013) morning. Donovan Construction Inc. of Rockledge, Fla., to modify the mobile launcher that will enable the agency's Space Launch System (SLS) heavy-lift rocket to send humans to an asteroid, Mars and other new destinations in the solar system. The work under this firm fixed-price $20.7 million contract will begin in June and be completed in 18 months. The mobile launcher is located at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Kennedy is expanding its capabilities to support the SLS rocket and ground support infrastructure. The modifications will enable the mobile launcher to meet vehicle processing deadlines and the launch manifest for SLS. SLS' first launch is scheduled for 2017. It will be a flight test to send an uncrewed Orion spacecraft into lunar orbit. NASA's asteroid initiative, proposed in the agency's budget request for fiscal year 2014, would use SLS and Orion to send astronauts to study a small asteroid that will have been redirected robotically to a stable orbit near the moon. Midwest Steel Inc. of Detroit will be a major subcontractor to J.P. Donovan Construction. Re: [meteorite-list] Ebay, Websites and State Taxes
So sorry, You are very mistaken, The real power is the 400 individuals who's wealth equals that of The lower 150,000,000 Americans - the top 7% of wealthy have more Than the lower 93%. These power elite finance Republican office holders and extravagant Lobbyists. The entire point of which is to insure the taxes of the Uper-rich Do not increase even 1/2 of 1%. The math is simple - they can afford vast Financing of the above cheaper than to pay even 1/2 of 1% more taxes - not To mention being SURE that the REAL leaches - bug businesses they own maintain sufficient loopholes to insure zero taxes. When Reagan was governor of CA he released his tax returns. He paid ZERO taxes - and it was all legal. The concentrated wealth will always be the real controllers unless, and it is most unlikely, the population wakes up. They maintain Fox and other vast resources of media to be sure that never happens and to keep the Masses fighting straw dogs (like welfare and immigration) while the HUGEST Percentage of our tax dollars go to a military larger than the combined militaries of the next 17 most powerful nations in the world. [meteorite-list] After Chelyabinsk: European Experts Assess Asteroid Options
http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Operations/Space_Situational_Awareness/After_Chelyabinsk_European_experts_assess_asteroid_options After Chelyabinsk: European experts assess asteroid options European Space Agency 8 May 2013 In February, a speeding asteroid slammed into our atmosphere and exploded high over Russia's Ural region, injuring hundreds and causing millions of euros of damage. What should we do if we have a similar - or even bigger - strike in the future? Of the more than 600 000 known asteroids in our Solar System, almost 10 000 are classified as near-Earth objects, or NEOs, because their orbits bring them relatively close to Earth's path. Dramatic proof that any of these can strike Earth came on 15 February, when an unknown object thought to be 17-20 m in diameter arrived at 66 000 km/h and exploded high above Chelyabinsk, Russia, with 20-30 times the energy of the Hiroshima atomic bomb. The resulting shock wave caused widespread damage and injuries, making it the largest known natural object to have entered the atmosphere since the 1908 Tunguska event, which destroyed a remote forest area of Siberia. "It's important that we become aware of the current and future position of NEOs, develop estimates on the likelihood of impacts and assess the possible consequences," says Detlef Koschny, Head of NEO activities in the Agency's Space Situational Awareness (SSA) Programme Office. "More importantly, we must consider whether and how warning, mitigation and possible deflection actions can be taken. It's important not only for Europe, but for the rest of the planet, too." One aspect of ESA's four-year-old effort requires the development of an integrated system to scan the sky nightly for as-yet-undiscovered NEOs. Another important element is studying how mitigation measures can be applied in the case of smaller NEOs, and how to deflect any larger ones that may seriously threaten our home planet. This week, Deimos Space, an industrial partner working for ESA on SSA, has invited top researchers from universities, research institutes, national space agencies and industry in Europe and the USA to discuss the state of the art in NEO impact effects and threat mitigation. The meeting is taking place in Tres Cantos, Spain, near Madrid. "A great deal of work remains to be done, for example, in computer modelling of impact effects, how airbursts differ from ground strikes, kinetic versus explosive deflection strategies and much more," says Gerhard Drolshagen, of the SSA Programme Office. "The aim is to develop plans that will guide us in current and future NEO research and development." Ultimately, ESA aims to develop the capability to integrate European current and new assets such as automated telescopes into a coordinated and more efficient NEO system that can provide nightly sky surveys and advanced warning. "With this, we can work with our partner agencies, scientists, industry and international bodies like the UN to offer firm options to national governments and political decision-makers," says Nicolas Bobrinsky, Head of ESA's SSA Programme. "Events like the Chelyabinsk strike show that the NEO hazard is not just theoretical, and we need to invest in practical measures today to address tomorrow's threats." Editor's note: A summary of the workshop findings will be available as a downloadable PDF after 8 May. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] Lecture: Radar Imaging of Near Earth Asteroids
http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/events/lectures_archive.php?year=2013&month=5 The von Karman Lecture Series: 2013 Radar Imaging of Near Earth Asteroids May 9 & 10 Radar is a very powerful astronomical technique for studying the physical properties and refining the orbits of near-Earth asteroids. The world's only two radar telescopes for imaging asteroids are at Arecibo, Puerto Rico, and Goldstone, California. These telescopes can image near-Earth asteroids with resolutions as fine as several meters, which greatly exceeds the finest resolution available from any ground- or space-based optical telescope (even the Hubble Space Telescope). Radar images reveal an object's size, shape, rotation state, and features on its surface such as craters, ridges, and even large boulders, and have discovered that 1/6 of near-Earth asteroids larger than 200 meters in diameter are double systems that revolve around each other, like miniature versions of the Earth and Moon, and that 10% of near-Earth asteroids look like gigantic peanuts, while others resemble muffins and potatoes! Re: [meteorite-list] Shipping to bad news places.
Aloha Sean, I have been shipping to Italy without trouble for years. The reason other dealers don't ship there may be because of Italy's many import restrictions, which take up multiple screens on the USPS counter terminals. I've shipped over 5000 packages worldwide, and have only lost a handful. With all due respect to the countries and their people, I have lost packages in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and China (I think the lost packages were scam thefts). gary On May 7, 2013, at 4:21 PM, Sean Brooks wrote: > Hello List, >I've noticed most U.S. dealers on E=bay don't ship to > Italy. Re: [meteorite-list] Shipping to bad news places.
I've had issues with India on 50% of my shipments there and have stopped shipping there. Usually it's so much bureaucratic red tape that its just easier to have the item returned. "What is the chemical composition of this rock? Where is the paperwork for the mine this came from? Come back after lunch, in 2 hours" Of course then it takes 6 months for your package to get back; flattened, tied with string, and covered in ink stamps and wax seals (surprisingly).
