Folks:
In case anyone on the list is interested, my latest book was
just published last week. It is available directly from Springer, but
not yet from Amazon. An image of the cover is attached. The book is
titled: Surface/Volume and explains how this geometric ratio affects
much of the physical world. Covered topics include basalts,
sandstones, chondrules, cosmic spherules, meteorite strewn fields,
differentiated bodies, pizza, fudge, cotton candy, lungs, small
intestines, brains, leaves, King Kong, dinosaurs, nanoparticles, and
krill. Something for everyone.

I guess with the increase in visibility of meteorite hunting, the
increase of online data resources available, and the increased numbers
of people hunting, some degree of silence is to be expected.

In the past, there was a lot of chatter on the List around a new fall.
There was the usual armchair hunters who would not go in person, but
had things to say and contribute to the effort in an indirect way.
Then there were the usual globetrotting hunters who would be on the
next flight or at the car rental agency before the news had even hit
the List. Everybody talked about it, but nobody was specific. Nobody
said exactly where they were going or how they were going to conduct
their hunting activities, but there was news and daily nuggets of info
for the world of spectators on the List.

I guess I am an old man shaking his fist and yelling at the clouds.
I've been on Facebook, and I know a lot of meteorite discussion goes
on there, so maybe this new fall is making some noise over there. I
don't know because I don't use FB any more.

Well, that's it. I'll keep talking to myself and the handful of
old-timers who still answer me, and maybe some others will
occasionally chime in. I'd love to see this place regain a little
steam and become a watering hole again.

sale of 627 items

Hello everyone,
My last email was about 4.5 months ago and since then much has changed in
the world and in my inventory. As before, I hope that every one of you is
staying safe and healthy. I have been staying quite busy and continue to
work on bridging the gap between scientists and collectors. Some of you have
been of great help on this project and I am very appreciative. If you’d like
to see some of what I’ve been working on you can go to:
https://www.skyfallmeteorites.com/education-research/meteorite-wiki/meteorit
ics-classification
Attached you will find my sales list spanning a large percentage of my
inventory (listed by type). The list is sortable and filterable so you can
easily sort by name if needed. Falls are highlighted in light blue. Notable
new meteorites are highlighted in light gray as are a few that may have been
overlooked in the past. Some notables:
1) Zhob, a rare classification, H3-4, fell Jan. 2020. This meteorite has
beautiful brecciation (picture attached).
2) Erg Chech 002, an ungrouped achondrite unlike anything seen in
meteoritics (picture attached).
3) Chwichiya 002, a C3.00-ung. This meteorite is a consignment item, but
all specimens are with me.
Though many institutions are not able to trade out material, for those of
you that can, I am usually open to do so on nearly all specimens. Prices and
pictures are available by request as is the provenance.
Regards to all and enjoy the weekend!

If you are on this distribution list it is because we either know each other
personally, have done business in the past, met at LPSC or MetSoc, are FB
Friends that have corresponded in a meaningful manner, or you were referred
to me by someone on this list. My intent is not to spam anyone and the max
number of emails you will receive from me will not exceed 6 times a year in
order to present new material for sale or to tell you about important
meteorite falls or classifications. If you do not want to be on this list,
please let me know and I will remove you.

Re: [meteorite-list] Met Bulletin Update : 51 new approvals, including many old early-NWA's, rare iron IIF, and more.

2020-08-07 Thread Roberto Vargas via Meteorite-list
Hey Mendy,
Thanks for your response, but if that’s true, Erg Chech 002 should have like 30
different NWA numbers. Same with 869 and Al Haggounia 001 and about a thousand
other NWAs. The Martian is unique looking enough and has a unique-ish
composition, was all found around the same time and submitted around the same
time. It’s all the same material. Just because it was sold to a handful of
dealers shouldn’t mean it’s a handful of different meteorites (opinion).

Roberto,

That’s the way it’s supposed to be. There is no self pairing with the “same”
meteorites from dense collection areas.

Lots of new and interesting approvals in the latest Met Bull update.
These include some early NWAs going back to 2002.

Interesting how all three Martian Shergottites have poikilitic texture. Almost
like they’re all the same material

Hi List,

Lots of new and interesting approvals in the latest Met Bull update.
These include some early NWAs going back to 2002.

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteoritical Bulletin Main Mass photos

2020-06-15 Thread Roberto Vargas via Meteorite-list
Hi all,
Thankfully, we all have the freedom to choose where to post and engage with the
community. In my opinion, email is best used for private messages between
members, but not really a great medium for forum-like content. As such, I use
Facebook. Facebook has features that email will never have (video, live feeds,
pictures, etc).
I kind of concur with the sentiment that this email list is dead/dying. I love
the daily MPoD vial email, but aside from that, this vehicle for sharing and
engaging with others is antiquated and obsolete.
However, I am grateful that it is still available for those of us who cannot or
will not change with the times. I believe those members have valuable insight
into meteorites and their history and I would sad to lose what could be gained
from them because they cannot or choose not to grasp how to use Facebook or
other social media platforms.
At the end of the day, some will move to Facebook and join the rest of us,
while others will stay here (until the number of people that are left here is
so small that it is really just an archive). Just my personal opinion.
Thanks,
Roberto V

Everything we do on the internet (including your last email) is being spied on.
No reason at all to bother worrying about facebook... LOL

There are reports of a large bright meteor at about midnight visible over
Haleakala and the Big Island. It triggered Nest cameras and people also
reported hearing a roaring noise. Gary, you on this? Sadly, chances are good
if there was any meteorite, it went into the ocean.
