[mou] Varied Thrush in Hennepin County

2003-11-03 Thread The Smiths
I am new to this business of reporting unusual birds, but on Saturday
morning I saw very briefly a bird under my dogwood shrubs that could only
have been a female Varied Thrush. I thought I was getting an unusual view
of a Robin, then realized it was one unusual Robin (what was that bright
orange throat and where did it get those garish orange stripes over its
eyes?) As I realized it was no Robin, it was off and I wasn't able to
relocate it. A trip to Sibley made the id as a female Varied Thrush easy (I
would not have been too certain of its identity going by the more boldly
colored males in my other guides). The orange throat, grey band across the
breast and paler orange belly were distinctive, but the orange supercilium
was the most distinctive.

It did not appear to be associated with any other birds in a flock of any
sort (I had the usual crowd of chickadees, nuthatches and house sparrows
flitting around but that was it.) We are on Brockton Lane on the
Plymouth-Medina border just north of Mooney Lake.

Perhaps the current crummy weather will keep around, since it seems to be
way out of its usual range.

With the snowfall this morning came dozens of lapland longspurs to the
roadside in Murray and Lyon Counties. Besides avoiding skidding vehicles I
had to slow for them, too. Over the week-end a pair of Greater Yellowlegs
fed in the shallows of Lake Wilson in western Murray County. Harris sparrows
still thick around my low platform feeder in Lake Wilson as well.

[mou] Spotted Towhee in Duluth

2003-11-03 Thread Kim R. Eckert
It was recently learned that a Spotted Towhee has been coming to a back
yard of a house on Park Point in Duluth for about a week. Chuck Krulas,
Jeff Stephenson and others saw the bird between 4:00 and 4:15 Sunday
afternoon and confirmed the ID. Several of us returned this morning, but it
was not seen while we were there between 7:00 and 9:30.

The address is 1320 Minnesota Ave, and the homeowner told us this morning
she has no problem with birders coming to look for it under the following
conditions:

- Park on the street, and walk along the fence on the south side of her
house only as far as her back deck until you can see the back yard; stay
next to the fence and do not walk on or along the driveway to south of her
house which is on neighboring property;

- Do not walk down the driveway to the north of her house which leads to
another neighbor's property;

- Watch for the towhee as it scratches/feeds on the ground; it apparently
does not come to any of her feeders, and there seems to be no particular
time of day when it is seen.

While relooking for the Spotted Towhee I drove down to Park Pt. I =
spotted several rafts of ducks just inside the park entrance on the bay =
side. One of the rafts had 5 Black Scoters and one White-wing Scoter. =
Most of the ducks were Greater Scaup, Ring-necked Duck and Redhead. =
There were some other rafts that had Buffleheads, Hooded Mergansers, =
Common Merganser and lots of Mallards and Black Ducks.

While looking for Spotted Towhee there must of been some good raptor =
migrants as I saw several Rough-legged Hawks, Red-tail Hawks and Bald =
Eagles.

[mou] Tundra Swans Mpls. city lakes

2003-11-03 Thread Chet Meyers
While driving home from work today I 'looped' the city lakes and found 47
tundra swans on Lake Calhoun and 49 on Lake Harriet... mostly adults, but
some first-year birds. The gulls were most active but with my compact
binocs and the sleet coming down it was difficult to ID any. One very large,
dark gull caught my eye but it got lost in the sleet. I imagine the swans
will stay the night, so morning might reveal even more surprises.

[mou] Check out Birder's World

2003-11-03 Thread Val/Roger
Hey, folks:
"Birder's World" arrived in the mail today, with John Gill's beautiful male
cardinal on the cover. Was intrigued by a cover teaser: "How we're turning
robins into snow birds."

Turned to page 68 to read more about it and discovered that this informative
and lively article was written by Duluth's own Laura Erickson, a contributor
both to MnBird and MouNet.

Way to go, Laura, nice piece!

4:10pm, Nov 3. Adult male Varied Thrush at Resurrection Cemetery, =
Mendota Heights. Directions: From Lexington Ave., enter cemetery and =
take first right (north) and go about 1/4 mile to 2 stucco buildings =
