[mou-net] Dunlins and willet
Went with Tom Bell to look for the whooping cranes today but they were gone. As a consolation prize we went to Randolph Industrial Park and found 2 dunlins and a willet - all very nervous at our approaching car. This place is a few miles north of Lake Billsby on Highway 56 (west side) Larry S Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
[mou-net] another summer tanager
I recall seeing a few reports of summer tanagers over the last couple weeks. I found images of a SUTA male on my camera from Sherburne NWR on May 15, 2011. I had forgotten taking the pictures and I assumed it was a SCTA (between better photos of CSWA and LEFL), but a few days later at Miss Blvd in St Paul, I saw a male (and female) scarlet tanager. I waited for the male to face me and when he did I realized there was no black on the front of the wing showing on my photos (frontal view). The black wrist and metacarpals should have been visible. (The tail in the photos was hidden altogether behind the body.) If anyone is tracking SUTAs in MN this year, this report is available. [mou-net] Marbled Godwit at Park Point, (Duluth).
This evening there was a marbled godwit at the park point recreation area and adjacent beach areas on the bay side. This is the third marbled godwit that I've observed at park point this spring. Shorebirds are beginning to show up in the Duluth area. This morning a large flock, 50+, of sanderlings was observed, as well as five ruddy turnstones, on the lake side of Minnesota Point. [mou-net] barn owl flying and domestic cat attacking -- playmates
This is a delightful piece of video that a friend sent me. A barn owl and cat are friends who do a lot of roughhouse. It is remarkable. The owl not only tolerates, but seems to bait the cat into leaps to catch him/her as he flies over. And the cat makes contact repeatedly. (declawed?) They also like to wrestle. It is fascinating. another example of a surprising inter-species relationship. Who knew that owls liked to play ---especially with a larger predator? You will laugh. I think it was made in Spain. http://www.wimp.com/catowl/ Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

Re: [mou-net] Duluth area birding
I'm coming up on Tuesday of next week and was going to ask the same thing! I'm planning on going to Park Point first and then over to Sax Zim, but I'm not really sure where to go in Sax Zim - I've been there twice with a guide, but this will probably be on my own. One could also head up to some of the state parks north of Duluth, but I'm not sure how good those areas are or not. I look forward to the responses, and if anyone is interested in birding with me on Tuesday afternoon (pending good weather) please let me know. Matti Hakkila saw a light morph Parasitic Jaeger on Lake Superior this evening (5/25), just west of the Lester River in Duluth. The bird was seen chasing and stealing food from Ring-billed Gulls.
