[mou-net] Snowy Owls - NW Polk County

2014-04-02 Thread Agassiz Audubon
Spotted an adult female hunting along Polk Co 20. Totally white and huge.
I thought for sure she was going to get hit by a truck as she flew low,
towards the shoulder of the road. She stopped short of the truck and
grabbed a rodent (feeding on grasses and grains exposed by yesterday's snow
plows) with one foot and flew back into the field where she gulped it down.

Also spotted 4 Rough-legged Hawks on power poles... and an American Robin
singing in a spruce heavy with snow just outside my door.

[mou-net] Pennington County - Northern Hawk-owl

2014-01-22 Thread Agassiz Audubon
Randy Knott of Thief River Falls contacted me this evening to report that
he spotted a Northern Hawk-owl on December 1st 2013 in Sanders Twp, Section
20.

He was in his deer stand when he spotted a Blue Jay harassing the owl. It
was within sight for about an hour, between 8:00 and 9:00 am.

He said because he was able to watch for a long period of time combined
with the fact that at one point it was within 10 feet of him, Randy was
easily able to ID it when he got back to the house. The Blue Jay harassed
the owl from about 100 feet above the treetops or so. Randy thought the Jay
didn't like being that exposed, because he left him alone after that.

The warbler was feeding on peanut butter suet at the Audubon Center. The
phoebe was at feeder with the sunflower hearts. Odd to see them both along
with droves of redpolls.

[mou-net] Boreal Owl - Marshall County (Warren) Snowy Owl - Polk County

2013-02-05 Thread Agassiz Audubon
I got a call today about a small owl that died (last week) in a yard full
of bird feeders - two miles east of Warren and one mile north of State Hwy
1 on 310th Ave near the Snake River overpass.

I drove over and dug through last night's snow and found it... a Boreal
Owl. (a photo is posted on the Agassiz Audubon facebook page).

I have not seen the Boreal Owl spotted two weeks ago at the Audubon Center
(Polk County).

A Snowy Owl was reported today - it may be the same bird reported several
times this winter - west on County 23 (from US 75 at Angus MN) to County 20
and north to 190th Street - it has flown up from the ditches and perched
on power poles along this road and to the west on township roads.

[mou-net] Snowy Owl west of Warren MN

2012-12-19 Thread Agassiz Audubon
One of our rural letter carriers called to report a Snowy Owl in rural
Warren on Tuesday morning. I went out looking for it, but didn't find it.
I did however, spot a Cooper's Hawk near a farm house on 380th Ave, just
north of 170th Street. I went out again late this afternoon and found the
Snowy Owl - about 8 miles west of the Audubon Center. I encountered a
dozen large flocks of Snow Buntings along Polk County 20 and along township
roads between Warren, Angus, Sherack and Tabor. (photos are posted on
Agassiz Audubon's facebook page).

I also spotted several large flocks of Bohemian Waxwings in downtown Warren
and a dozen Wild Turkeys on Polk County 23 by the Pembina Trail.

a handful of Cedar Waxwings amongst the 60+ Bohemians all over the crab

Common Ravens and a Short-eared Owl in the CRP on the west side of Polk

[mou-net] Nighthawks and a change in access to the Agassiz Valley Impoundment in Warren

2012-08-23 Thread Agassiz Audubon
The sky was full of Common Nighthawks at dusk yesterday. We counted about
2 dozen on the west side of the Agassiz Valley impoundment. The
impoundment has water - and shorebirds, cranes and waterfowl have started
to move. A handful of White Pelicans and Great Egrets are still hanging
around.

The Middle-Snake-Tamarac Rivers Watershed District has opened the
impoundment to cars for wildlife viewing. The new 1-way loop is an
improved gravel road on top of the dike. Enter at the northwest corner
gate (210th Street NW) a mile south of MN Hwy 1 - and exit the dike at
200th Street. The road is wide enough for 2 vehicles and there's a parking
pull-off at the 1/2 mile point. Please do *not *drive off the gravel road
onto the embankment.

The remaining 3+ miles on dike is gated and closed to vehicles without a
permit.

However, the Watershed District will allow access to members of Agassiz
Audubon Society who volunteer to uplink their checklist to eBird. If you
would like to participate in data collection, please contact me in advance
(via email) to make arrangements pick up the gate key. Thanks!
