[mou-net] Pennington County - Northern Hawk-owl
Randy Knott of Thief River Falls contacted me this evening to report that he spotted a Northern Hawk-owl on December 1st 2013 in Sanders Twp, Section 20. He was in his deer stand when he spotted a Blue Jay harassing the owl. It was within sight for about an hour, between 8:00 and 9:00 am. He said because he was able to watch for a long period of time combined with the fact that at one point it was within 10 feet of him, Randy was easily able to ID it when he got back to the house. The Blue Jay harassed the owl from about 100 feet above the treetops or so. I went out again late this afternoon and found the Snowy Owl - about 8 miles west of the Audubon Center. I encountered a dozen large flocks of Snow Buntings along Polk County 20 and along township roads between Warren, Angus, Sherack and Tabor. (photos are posted on Agassiz Audubon's facebook page). I also spotted several large flocks of Bohemian Waxwings in downtown Warren and a dozen Wild Turkeys on Polk County 23 by the Pembina Trail. -- Heidi Hughes Agassiz Audubon Society 27391 190th Street NW Warren MN 56762 218.745.5663 http://www.facebook.com/AgassizAudubon Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

We continue to have 40+ Common Redpolls, a lone Hoary Redpoll and a dozen Pine Grosbeaks at the Audubon Center feeders. I found a handful of Cedar Waxwings amongst the 60+ Bohemians all over the crab apples along the streets of downtown Warren today. A Rough-legged Hawk, 4 Common Ravens and a Short-eared Owl in the CRP on the west side of Polk County 68 at the Marshall County line (in the Agassiz Valley impoundment). [mou-net] Nighthawks and a change in access to the Agassiz Valley Impoundment in Warren
The sky was full of Common Nighthawks at dusk yesterday. We counted about 2 dozen on the west side of the Agassiz Valley impoundment. The impoundment has water - and shorebirds, cranes and waterfowl have started to move. A handful of White Pelicans and Great Egrets are still hanging around. The Middle-Snake-Tamarac Rivers Watershed District has opened the impoundment to cars for wildlife viewing. The new 1-way loop is an improved gravel road on top of the dike. Enter at the northwest corner gate (210th Street NW) a mile south of MN Hwy 1 - and exit the dike at 200th Street. The road is wide enough for 2 vehicles and there's a parking pull-off at the 1/2 mile point. Please do *not *drive off the gravel road onto the embankment. The remaining 3+ miles on dike is gated and closed to vehicles without a permit. However, the Watershed District will allow access to members of Agassiz Audubon Society who volunteer to uplink their checklist to eBird. If you would like to participate in data collection, please contact me in advance (via email) to make arrangements pick up the gate key. Thanks!
