[Nagios-users] Nagios cannot detect user

2006-02-13 Thread Matteo Corti
Hi,

I access nagios (2.0) through Apache and SSL (see below for the
configuration)
As expected Apache asks me to authenticate when loading the page but
nagios is not able to get my user name. In the tactical overview I see:

  Tactical Monitoring Overview
Last Updated: Mon Feb 13 09:24:30 CET 2006
  Updated every 90 seconds
  Nagios® - www.nagios.org
  Logged in as ?

Since I am using authentication (use_authentication=1) I am not able to
access all the information pages.

If I set the default user everything works like a charm (i.e., the rest
of the configuration seems OK).

Many thanks for any hint.

Matteo

[Nagios-users] monitor directory size?

2006-02-13 Thread HP Geeza

Hi All,

I was wondering whether it is possible to monitor the size of a directory
(eg find out how big it is in in MB or GBs) and then send an alert when the
size goes over a certain threshold?

Any help would be great!

Re: [Nagios-users] monitor directory size?

2006-02-13 Thread HP Geeza
From what i can tell though check_snmp_storage.pl only allows you to check
for particular kinds of storage settingswhat i need to do is monitor the
size of a directory on a remote windows server for example, d:\data

i am using nsclient at the moment but can't monitor directory size (only
disk space). Is there a way to monitor a directories size via snmp

Apache's mod_rewrite is your friend.

[Nagios-users] Using check_nagios plugin

2006-02-13 Thread Wheeler, JF (Jonathan)
I am running nagios version 2.0rc2 with nagios-plugins version 1.4.1.
In the commands file I issue a local command on the server using the
check_nagios plugin like this:

$USER1$/check_nagios -F /var/log/nagios/status.log -e 5 -C
/usr/bin/nagios

>From the web interface I get the following message:

Nagios problem: located 2 processes, status log updated 1139840775
seconds ago

If I issue the command on the server, that is, as;

/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nagios -F /var/log/nagios/status.log -e 5
-C /usr/bin/nagios

I get the message:

Nagios problem: located 1 process, status log updated 1139840299 seconds
ago

>From this I have 3 questions:

a) why the difference in the number of processes
b) why does the log file use timestamps using the number of seconds
since 1st Jan 1970 (I could not find a configuration option to control
this)
c) why the warning about the update of the status log file

Many thanks in advance

Well, I have a gut feeling that more information about this error
might be available in the server error log.

I believe this is your problem. If the nagios cgi's truly live in
/usr/lib/nagios/cgi, then the auth restrictions are not applied where
they're needed. You're applying them to the wrong directory,
/usr/lib/nagios/cgi-bin.

You're being prompted to log in because the auth restrictions to the
html directory _are_ working but that doesn't matter since the CGI's,
that need to see the auth info, are in another directory.

Re: [Nagios-users] Additiona Info don't work with Win Server!

2006-02-13 Thread Thibault Genessay

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Glad you ask, but ... er ... not that much actually

With Linux/Unix Servers work fine. I receive email with additional info.
With Windows Servers don't work! Why?

You probably don't use the same plugin for windows and linux so that's
not directly related to the OS but rather to the plugin or, more
probably, to the kind of output you get from your plugin.

Let's put what is spread on 3 different mails all together so that other
users have a maximum amount of info. You have the following service
notification configuration:

define command{
command_name notify-by-email
command_line /usr/bin/printf "%b" "* Nagios v2.0b4 *\n\nNotification Type: $NOTIFICATIONTYPE$\n\nService: $SERVICEDESC$\nHost: $HOSTALIAS$\nAddress: $HOSTADDRESS$\nState: $SERVICESTATE$\n\nDate/Time: $LONGDATETIME$\n\nAdditional Info:\n\n$SERVICEOUTPUT$\n\n" | /bin/mail -s "** $NOTIFICATIONTYPE$ alert - $HOSTALIAS$/$SERVICEDESC$ is $SERVICESTATE$ **" $CONTACTEMAIL$
}

You use this as the notification command in your service definition,
right ? So you should first start by naming it 'service-notify-by-email'
for clarity's sake. Anyway you get the following mail

--
 Nagios v2.0b4 *

Notification Type: PROBLEM

Service: Used Disk D:
Host: myhost
Address: ip
State: CRITICAL

Date/Time: Mon Feb 13 15:42:45 CET 2006

Additional Info:

D:
--

Whereas the last line should be
D:\ - total: 63.80 Gb - used: 61.72 Gb (97%) - free 2.08 Gb (3%)

The problem obviously (imho at least) comes from this backslash. It does not look like a coincidence: one backslash and your output gets truncated just afterwards.

It's very hard to figure out if and how backslashes get interpreted in the pipeline
plugin > nagios > mail with bash popping in everywhere. I don't even know if
you can rely on the fact that the command
printf "%b" "D:\ - total: 63.80 Gb - used: 61.72 Gb (97%) - free 2.08 Gb (3%)\n" | mail
-s "this is just a test" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
works on the command line.

Ideas:
Try to redirect the mail body to a file rather than sending it, i.e. /bin/printf
[...] > /tmp/somefilenagioscanwriteto and examine its content. Try to get your
plugin not output this backslash you don't care about after all (that's what mine
does actually). Give us more info on you system, Nagios ver., service definition,
check plugin, ...

connect on port 80 to go to the https site.
Redirect permanent /nagios https://my.domain.com/nagios

Maximum permissions in itself could be causing a failure as it violates
the apache security.

I suggest you pick up the apache documentation and verify the bit about
CGI and permissions and securiring it.

[Nagios-users] Host notifications sent but not wanted

2006-02-13 Thread Radkon
I upgraded to nagios 2.0b4 and now whenever I get a service alert I also receive a "host up" alert. Even if i disable host notifications I still get a "host up" alert along with the service notification.

Anyone know how to turn off this "feature" :-). Thank you very much.

I think 2.0b4 is rather old. The real 2.0 is out for some time now.

But having run 2.0b4 for quite a while I am puzzled as I have never seen
this.

So can you show an example of your host and service definition(s)?

Thanks for the response, this was my foolishness! I had "host-notify-by-email" set on the service_notifications for some reason.

[Nagios-users] Subdirectories in Nagios installation dir.

2006-02-13 Thread Jong-Geun Park
Hi,

I tried to install Nagios 2.0 on Fedora Core 4 according to the Nagios V. 2.0 documentation.

All of commands and options are same with those in the document.

But in the Nagios installation dirctory (/usr/local/nagios), there is no "etc" subdirectory.

What did I do some wrong?

Have you tried to install with `yum install nagios`?

That is the fast lane and your config files live in /etc/nagios

Many thanks, whis was indeed the problem. I really didn't notice looking
at the config files since, without thinking too much, both
/usr/lib/nagios/cgi and /usr/lib/nagios/cgi-bin seemed reasonable.

Thanks again,

Matteo
