John Connors Presents: Chimney Swifts and People


A Chimney Swift is an enigmatic little bird that spends almost its entire
life airborne. When it lands, it can’t perch—it clings to vertical walls
inside chimneys or in hollow trees or caves. This species has suffered
sharp declines as chimneys fall into disuse.

John Connors is a naturalist, environmental educator and one of the leaders
in Wake Audubon’s on-going effort to educate the public about Chimney
Swifts. John recently retired from the North Carolina Museum of Natural
Sciences. In his role as the Coordinator of the Naturalist Center, John
lead thousands of programs for tens of thousands of children and visitors
over the course of his career.

The New York Bight encompasses more than 16,000 square miles of coastal and
ocean waters from Montauk, New York, to Cape May, New Jersey. It is an
ecological treasure trove, providing critical migration routes for globally
threatened species, including sea turtles, whales, and sharks, as well as
nursery grounds and critical habitat for hundreds of other marine species.
Noah Chesnin, Associate Director of the New York Seascape Program, will
describe how the Wildlife Conservation Society’s New York Aquarium is
engaged in field research, education and policy advocacy in order to help
protect marine wildlife and help cultivate an ocean ethic in the region.

artifacts, and some small live animals. Learn how you can get involved and
make a positive difference in our local environment.

arboretum or create a new plant corridor? We will consider positive
effective ways to involve our local and state officials. After this
presentation we will divide into small groups to share ideas and create new
ones that can be implemented to address the vital issues of conservation
and promotion of our native flora.

*Tom Gray Presents: The Amazing Birds of South East Asia*

Tom Gray is the Director of Science for the conservation organization
Wildlife Alliance. He recently moved to upper Manhattan, with Fort Tyron
Park slowly becoming his local patch, after 15 years living and working in
South East Asia. This talk will focus on some of the remarkable birds of
South East Asia, particularly Cambodia, and the conservation efforts
focused to conserve them in the face of the region’s rapidly growing
economies and shrinking wildernesses. Tom will describe expeditions looking
for wintering shorebirds, including spoon-billed sandpiper, in the Gulf of
Thailand and to the peaks of the Cardamom Mountains searching for endemic
partridges and laughing thrush. The talk culminates in encounters with the
majestic giant ibis – one of the worlds most threatened and evolutionary
distinct species.

*An important note about meeting location:* Due to scheduling conflicts at
the library, our April and May meetings will be held at the Prospect Park
Zoo.

Please enter at the service gate.  The service gate is located south of the
zoo's main entrance on Flatbush Avenue, but just north of, and practically
next to the Leffert's house. A zoo security guard will be posted there till
7:15 to allow late comers in. If you arrive late, you may not be able to
get onto zoo grounds. Please be on time for a 7:00pm start.

When the meeting concludes, members will be escorted out together to
Flatbush Avenue. Zoo security is on grounds to keep us safe at all times.

Our meeting will take place in the "C" building classroom. It has
accessible bathrooms down the hallway. After walking into the service gate,
you will continue walking straight, through a large gate, until you are on
the actual zoo path (~ 75 ft), turn right on the path and walk toward a
large octopus sculpture. Turn left under the Octopus, this will put you on
the Discovery Trail (where the pond is). Immediately on your right is the

FEMINISM – WOMEN’S FIGHT FOR CHANGE

For half a century, from the 1870s to the 1920s, women on both sides of the
Atlantic were gripped by a fashion craze that decreed all hats should be
laden with feathers. Not just feathers, but wings, bird and whole bodies of
birds – often several birds at a time. Species the world over were slowly
brought to the brink of extinction, and all for the sake of millinery.
Campaigning on behalf of the birds was a small band of angry woman with a
splendidly simple goal. They were going to stamp out the fashion for
feathers in hats.

The ‘feather fight’, as it became known, was bitter, vicious and
un-sisterly. Wearers of the ‘bird hat’ were attacked as narcissists and
slaughterers. Edwardian fashion victims hit back, calling their female
critics ‘plumage cranks’ and ‘feather faddists’. Why shouldn’t emancipated
women wear what they wanted? Leading the battle in Britain was a fearsome
woman who has not been remembered by history, and yet for 50 years was the
driving force behind the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB),
today Britain’s biggest conservation charity. Her name was Etta Lemon.
Where she lead in1889, the Audubon Society would follow.

When social historian Tessa Boase told the RSPB she wanted to write their
early story, they refused to let her revisit their archives. To a former
investigative journalist and Oxford English graduate, this was a challenge
she could not resist . . . Join her to hear the intriguing untold story of
women, birds, hats – and votes. After the talk, Tessa will be signing
copies of her book, Mrs Pankhurst’s Purple Feather: Fashion, Fury and
Feminism – Women’s Fight for Change.

[nysbirds-l] Western Tanager city hall pk Manhattan YES

I'm sure everyone is tired of reports about this bird and (I won't say but) it 
continues in same location of city hall park (east west path in NE corner) for 
anyone who was considering trying for it.  Bird was hunkered in a tree with 
yellow leaves on south side of east west path near city hall gate it made one 
or two little half hearted nasally calls which alerted me to its presence.

[nysbirds-l] Cliff/cave swallow Nassau county

Bobbi Manian, Kristin Costello and I obs a tawny rumped swallow in the vacant 
lot south of the point lookout ball fields at end of lido Blvd. bird was alone 
then loosely associating with tree swallows then alone again. Bird is faithful 
to dirt path along water that passes broken concrete with rebar sticking out 
about 50 yards south of parking lot. Bird has a smudgy forehead not bright 
white with spotted undertail coverts. We tried to get some photos but windy so 
not easy.

photography and how to best implement them in the field. We’ll discuss the
interaction of aperture, depth of field, noise and ISO sensitivity. We’ll
also cover focusing problems, benefits and downsides to using flash, and
how to compensate for birds moving from dark to light backgrounds.

Processing your photos after you get home is another critical part of bird
photography. Post-processing can make the difference between an OK photo
and a stunning shot. We’ll discuss the basics of post-processing, what
programs to use, and the best techniques for adjusting exposure, color
balance, and sharpness. The workshop format will give us plenty of time to
go over all of these key concepts in detail and allow for lots of questions.
Tom Stephenson has been birding since he was a kid under the tutelage of
Dr. Arthur Allen of Cornell University. His articles and photographs are in
museums and many publications including Birding, Birdwatcher’s Digest,

Heather is a birder and photographer and is a web developer at theCornell
Lab of Ornithology. She leads bird walks, teaches birding classes and
documents the birds of Brooklyn Bridge Park on her

Re: [nysbirds-l] Any sightings of the Swainson's Warbler Saturday?

As Josh reported several members of the Brooklyn Bird Club sat walk and I heard 
the bird singing briefly in the same area it was seen in the mid wood but never 
got eyes on it. It was not singing as frequently as it was yesterday and 
covered a fair amount of ground between songs. It was a brief steak out maybe 
30 min or so as most of us had a chance to see bird earlier in the week.

Lisa Manne, Assistant Professor of Biology at the College of Staten Island,
will present
Migration Mysteries: Variation in Migration Distances for North American
Short-distance Migrants Under Climate Change

Under climate change, bird ranges are tending to shift toward the poles.
There are good reasons to believe that winter ranges might be shifting at
the same rate of speed as are breeding ranges. Her lab is testing this
assertion with long-term data for short-distance North American migrants.
They found a diversity of responses, and a few surprises!

MARIE READ PRESENTS: SIERRA WINGS: BIRDS OF THE MONO LAKE BASIN

Marie Read’s photography of California’s iconic Mono Lake and environs
reveals the fascinating birdlife of this spectacular birding hotspot, which
is a Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network site of International
Importance. Tufa towers rise above the surface of Mono Lake’s highly
saline/alkaline water, which teems with brine shrimp and alkali flies. Many
breeding and migratory birds, including California Gulls, Wilson’s and
Red-necked phalaropes, and Eared Grebes are attracted to the feast. Pinyon
Jay, Violet-green Swallow, Sage Thrasher, and Lewis’s and Black-backed
Woodpeckers are among the birds living in the surrounding sagebrush scrub
and forests. Marie will present stories from the field and explain how she
obtained some of the behavior and action shots featured in her book Sierra
Wings: Birds of the Mono Lake Basin. Signed copies will be available for
purchase.

Marie Read’s photographs and articles have appeared in magazines such as
Living Bird, Bird Watching, Nature’s Best, and National Wildlife, as well
as in books and calendars worldwide. She has authored several books about
birds and their behavior, most recently Into The Nest, co-authored with
Laura Erickson (Storey Publishing, 2015).

Conservation Center of Appalachia, a nonprofit organization dedicated to

Wildlife in Need of Rescue and Rehabilitation (WINORR) is a non-profit,
volunteer organization serving New York City, Nassau, and Western Suffolk
Counties. They provide professional care for sick, injured, and orphaned
wildlife. WINORR rescues and cares for wild animals received through the
Department of Environmental Conservation, local police, animal hospitals,
humane societies, animal control, as well as the general public. The state
and federal governments license us to provide this service. In addition to
rehabilitation, WINORR also provides information and education for the
community.

WINORR was the beneficiary of this year’s Brooklyn Bird Club World
Migratory Bird Day birdathon.

The founder of WINNOR, wildlife rehabilitator Bobby Horvath, will discuss
the daily trials and tribulations in rehabilitating wild birds and the
hardships that threaten the lives of the animals brought in to the care of
WINORR.

A Chimney Swift is an enigmatic little bird that spends almost its entire
life airborne. When it lands, it can’t perch—it clings to vertical walls
inside chimneys or in hollow trees or caves. This species has suffered
sharp declines as chimneys fall into disuse.

John Connors is a naturalist, environmental educator and one of the leaders
in Wake Audubon’s on-going effort to educate the public about Chimney
Swifts. John recently retired from the North Carolina Museum of Natural
Sciences. In his role as the Coordinator of the Naturalist Center, John
lead thousands of programs for tens of thousands of children and visitors
over the course of his career.

Re:[nysbirds-l] Glaucous Gull Brooklyn

I've had a few inquiries so to Clarify there were two Glaucous Gulls at
Coney Island Creek Park Today. Bobbi Manian and I Initially saw an all
white gull flying over the far west end of seagate from the 37th street
jetti that briefly landed on the water but was too far for a positive id.
in an effort to get a closer look we went to coney island creek park and
walked west on the beach where we found an immature glgu sitting on the
water behind the sea gate homes there. this is when i reported bird. it was
then joined by a second glgu in similar plumage that flew in from the south
west (maybe this was the first bird we saw?). the two birds were together
for ten or fifteen minutes before one flew off and out of sight over kaiser
park. when we left the remaining gull was still on the water near seagate
and was later refound in the area. this was more than i felt i could write
from the field at the time and was satisfied that other birders were
alerted to the birds presence and managed to get on it.

Today at Floyd Bennett Field I observed several individuals getting very
close to snowies (less than ten feet) including one who was clearly not a
birder or nature photographer chasing a bird around the grasslands with a
cell phone. I flagged down a passing US Gov Police Officer and Pointed out
the activity. He informed me that you are allowed to get as close to the
wildlife as you like and do as you please. I then asked if he could call a
ranger. He refused and then asked me why i wanted to report someone who was
doing the same thing i was. to which I replied we were observing the
wildlife from a distance of 100 yards or more not harassing it. he shook
his head at me and drove away. by this time the worst of the three
harassers had left so i let it go.

Glaucous Gull continues at Coney Island creek. Bobbi Manian, Chris Las and 
myself observed the bird chillin' with a mixed flick of gulls on little beach 
just west of kaiser park concrete pier. Bird lifted off and returned to same 
spot a few times. Possibly one of the individuals Bobbi M and I found there in 
late December.

[nysbirds-l] Floyd Rough Legged Correction

Upon further review the Rough legged hawk I reported from Floyd Bennett
Field today was in fact a Grey Ghost Harrier as seen from below. I was
wrong, I miss identified the bird.

I wanted to see an RLHA and I did. unfortunately there wasn't actually one

Last year, Tom Stephenson and Scott Whittle introduced the birding world to
a new approach to warbler identification in *The Warbler Guide*. In this
presentation, Tom will cover many new techniques that make it easier to
identify singing warblers and other species. Based on a new system outlined
in *The Warbler Guide*, Tom will explain and demonstrate how to understand
a song's structure, the characteristics that make up the song, and how to
use a song finder to quickly identify a singing warbler.

Brooklyn birder Dale Dyer is a gifted artist and a scientific illustrator
specializing in birds. Over the last 20 years he has produced illustrations
for books on birds of Peru, Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago, North America, and
New York State. He is currently painting all of the illustrations for a
book on the birds of Central America, a massive undertaking projected to
take 8 years.

At our April program, Dale will give a preview of the book, bringing along

[nysbirds-l] Brooklyn COWA

At approx 6pm I observed a Connecticut Warbler in Brooklyn's prospect park. The 
bird was walking in the leaf litter inside the fence behind the upper pool near 
a large fallen tree. I observed the bird walking south for about ten feet 
before it passed under the Space between  the fallen three and the ground. The 
bird has not reappeared as of 6:30. This is the same area where a KEWA spent a 
few days this spring if you try for it.

Bobbi Manian and I briefly had a Hudsonian Godwit on low tide flats at plum 
beach in brooklyn.
Bird landed for about three minutes then flew off toward breezy point. Pics

[nysbirds-l] Hudsonian Godwit Brooklyn Photos

bird flew in over our heads from the north about 150 yards from the Far
East end of the beach. We saw dark wing with white bar right away. Bird
landed on the low tide flats (Falling but almost low tide.) and foraged in
a tide pool for about two minutes. The bird then flew 50 yards to the south
west where it landed on a little exposed spit of land with green vegetation
near waters edge. During this flight we saw white rump and dark tail. After
about two minutes at this location bird flew toward breezy point. I don't
have much experience with this bird so not going to try to age or sex but
no red on belly.

They flew in from the north east with two bb plovers and four red knots. They 
spent a few moments at a tide pool then flew

There's nothing more satisfying in birding than being able to recognize the
birds singing and calling around you. The language for describing visual ID
points for birds greatly helps us identify the species of an unknown bird.
The lack of this language for songs makes it very difficult to know how to
figure out an unknown song.

In this talk we'll cover how to improve your song recognition and learning
skills by using memory theory combined with the understanding of song and
phrase structure. We'll also discuss an efficient language for describing
vocalizations and give examples of how objective analysis of songs makes it
much easier to separate similar-sounding species.

Tom Stephenson has been birding since he was a kid. His articles have
appeared in many publications, including *Birding, Birdwatcher's Digest,
Handbook of the Birds of the World*, and *Guide to the Birds of SE Brazil*.
He has lectured and guided many groups across the US as well as in Asia,
where he has trained guides for the government of Bhutan. In 2013,
Princeton University Press published *The Warbler Guide*.

Cuba is the largest country in the Caribbean and accounts for over half of
all the land area in the West Indies. The diversity of Cuban birds is
considerable, not only in terms of species richness, but also in terms of
the number of endemics. The 372 species recorded in Cuba include 285
species that regularly occur. Living endemics 26 species, among them the
charming Cuban Tody, the striking and Elegant Cuban Trogon, and the
smallest of all birds in the World, the Bee Hummingbird! At the present
talk Arturo will present the best itinerary that include the most important
birding sites, with photos of most of the important birds you would love to
see.

Arturo Kirkconnell is the bird curator at the National Museum of Natural
History of Cuba. His curriculum vitae includes 77 scientific papers and he
is author of two books: A Field Guide to the Birds of Cuba, and A
Birdwatchers' Guide to Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico and the
Caymans. At present, he is working in another project: The birds of Cuba
that will be published by the BOU Checklist Series and A photographic Guide
to the Birds of Cuba. Arturo has been leading birding tours in his native
Cuba since 1988. To date he has guided more than 200 birding groups. He
designed the present birding itinerary and the main birding strategies in

Presenter: Paulo Boute

Come take a virtural tour of the Pantanal and Brazilian birds at this
presentation with Brazilian guide Paulo Boute. Paulo is one of the
pioneering birders and ornithologists in Brazil, with almost 30 years of
experience guiding birders and photographers.

Paulo was born on a ranch near Iguassu Falls and from a very early age he
has literally been in touch with Brazilian birds: his older brother
collected birds and very often he had the chance of holding them in his own
hands! At the age of 17 Paulo moved to the state of Mato Grosso, where he
started working as a tour guide in the Pantanal. He was one of the first
and now is the most experienced guide working in this unique habitat, with
more than a thousand trips to the Pantanal. His Brazilian life list is 1260
birds.

Paulo has inspired others to follow in his tracks and is very proud in
having dedicated his life to preserving the birds in Brazil and educating
others on their beauty. When he is not guiding--either in the Pantanal,
Amazon/Atlantic Forest or in the Brazilian Northeast--he is teaching
birdwatching and presenting lectures both abroad and in-country.
