The wodim stuff suggests nothing odd. Though DVD-RW/DVD-R media is not
the best choice for data work... Your DVD unit is not able to write
DVD+RW, but should be capable of reading such media even if this
capability is not mentioned. (DVD+RW does not need finalizing among
other things and is designed to be read by DVD-R devices).

I would try ...

mount -t iso9660

With DVD in drive. You will probably need to to do this as root.
If it loads OK start saving up for a new writer but to be certain burn a
another RW DVD and test it , if it does not work at all you probably
need a new writer.

The dmesg output suggests the writer is attempting to read beyond the
end of the media for info and not finding it.

Thank you all for the answers.

Let's see:
The disc was finalized.
In the meantime I tested the DVD in different DVD and DVD-
RW drives and all of them saw the content of the DVD.
Only my NEC fails.
Here are different test result:

wodim:

This is wodim, not cdrecord. Don't expect it to behave like
cdrecord in any
way, don't refer to it as "cdrecord". Send problem reports to

What error are you getting when the DVD mount is attempted?

Try

wodim dev= -atip

with the DVD in drive at CLI and see what you get...

also try

wodim dev= -prcap

To find out what the device reports it is capable of doing.

I have had issues with readers not identifying the FS on the media and
having to force a mount with the -t option in the past.

did you "fix" or "close" or "finalize" or whatever your dvd writer
name ending the dvd to be read by others?

Hi Istvan and Happy New Year!

I checked the specs on both drives and they seem to be compatible with respect
to supported media and modes. Maybe one is "sloppier" and the other "tighter"
vis a vis calibrating to inserted media for creating or detecting tracks?
Here's what I'd do (YMMV, of course!):

a) burn a comparable test disc with the NEC using a fresh blank
b) check if the Pioneer is able to read it
c) (re)write your data on that disc using the Pioneer drive
d) cross fingers :-) and test to see if the NEC drive can now read it

The goal, of course, is test to see if you can 'convince' the Pioneer drive to
properly calibrate and write in a mode that is readable by the NEC drive as
opposed to a possibly incompatible default?

I know, not very sophisticated but worth trying in a pinch!

regards,

Carl
