Re: year 2059 problem

2002-12-30 Thread Nicolai Tufar

UNIX stores time as amount of seconds passed since
the 1st of January 1970.
Since it is 32-bit value in modern Unices, it can
hold up to 2,147,483,648  or
approximatively 68 years. The
counter overflows on 19th of January 2038 at
3:14:07 AM. People believe that all the hardware
will be 64-bit by that time.
But apparently it is not the case in
Nepal.

Oracle, internally can
handle dates well beyond that.
It is definitely W2K's deficiency. Any other 32-bit
platform will have it too.
Looks like the only solution is to move to a 64-bit
platform/OS.

For more information see: http://www.gsp.com/2038/

Hope it helps.

Nic.

Both answers a are expected to be "No". The lawsuit is

Blah, you DON'T understand it.
This will be the biggest upgrade of Oracle software in last 15 year.
The administrators get possibility to enjoy first time the power of
mutimedia,
network and great user interface like dekstop users have.
Till today poor administrators have to work with command line and use absurd
SSH to connect to server (Don't tell me you still use VIM!).
Now you will get the enhanced XP desktop with variable skins and virtual
desktops!!!

  Hi,

Wondering if anyone can help me with this question. Basically we have a
parallel server setup (solaris 2.8 oracle 8.1.7.3)and so are using raw
devices. I am in the process of recreating the tablspaces to be locally
managed as opposed to dictionary. My question is this: In a filesystem
environment, I would drop the tablespace in oracle and rm the corresponding
datafile on the unix level, and then I can go about recreating my tablespace.
I know that the OS doesnt really "interact" with the raw devices as such, but,
in this situation would I be able to drop the tablespace and recreate it
without having to do anything on the unix level? Would that corresponding raw
  device just be overwritten??

  Any
  help would be greatly appreciated

Re: Difference Between DBMS/RDBMS

2002-06-25 Thread Nicolai Tufar

Oracle was the first commercial Realtional Database Management System.
And it was relational from day one (version two :), and it was built with
relational theory in mind. IBM was the first to implement RDBMS though.
It was called System R, or something, later it became known as DB2.

Take a look at this paper:
http://www.mcjones.org/System_R/SQL_Reunion_95/index.html

Very fascinating reading. They tell how Larry was trying to get tle list
of DB2 error codes so that Oracle would be compatible with it.
Also a bit about Larry luring IBM engeneers promising that they
would become millionares with Oracle. He was right.

Not all DBMS have features of RDBMS.
dBase or IBM's IMS are that come to

There were hierachical databases, network
databases,
ISAM (Indexed Sequential Acess Method) but these

no DBMS can be successfull whitout
