short-lived. Sad but true.

I like the infra part. Many of us are 'researchers' who just dont have big

without having breaking arms and legs. For instance I'm particularly
interested to test and expand some ideas on immunological cloud infra
(since Boh uses health as example).

 Hi guys!

I just been inform by Pn. Suzita (UKM) about open day which I stated at
the subject above. So, she contact me for recruit some numbers of community
members joining forces as promotional team like we've done last year (if I
not mistaken). We only needed for 25th and 26th March 2011.

Because I'm not really quite free at that time, is there others who
would like to join them? Just let me know.

 Thanks :)

The new Samsung phone for Yes is definitely not on Android. I just got a
test phone on Saturday. I've yet to try to use the phone as a modem on
linux. Hopefully I have the time to test that kinda setup today.

Yes usb dongle definitely not working under all flavor of Linux because
there is no driver for the device. It was reported there will be one for
android, but I won't put my hopes too high on this. If you have Windows/OSX
on a VM, perhaps you can still use the dongle. Otherwise your only option is
to hack a (userland?) driver yourself.

Lazy query vs greedy query perhaps. People in FOSS are usually "lazy", hence
make use of lazy query. Vendors are usually "greedy" and hence make use of
greedy query :)

Re: [osdcmy] Do CS need maths

2011-03-12 Terurut Topik E A Faisal
I'm not formally trained on CS. All my programming knowledge is self taught.
So this is my opinion.

Programming is not solely an art. It's both art and science. I experienced
countless of times where knowing maths would be extremely useful. While it's
true that you can program something without any understanding of math but I
learned the hard way that to implement something efficiently and of high
quality you still need maths. I once created a middleware that helped to
bridge between a system with Hylafax which I needed to write a scheduler to
poll fax status from Hylafax. My first implementation was straight forward,
without any thought of mathematical model. It worked but it ate up resources
needlessly. Though it didn't give any problem but it's not elegant because
it wasted on computing resource which I might need in the future. Eventually
I managed to find a mathematical model to implement a good scheduler - yes!
math to the rescue.

Still not buying on the importance of math? Consider yourself doing
programming and need to choose a data structure. Without good math
understanding how can you decide which data structure would be best on a
given program? Want to analyse your newly and cool algorithm? Who you gonna
call? Math, of course. Even when you code bussiness app, your business logic
is basically a representation of mathematical model.

Not to discourage new programmer, you can still code with knowing math in
depth. But, IMHO as you progress into a more competent programmer you better
catch up with math again. It certainly helps. Math has helped me, I'm sure
it's useful to others too.

Yes you can simply copy. Perhaps use ldd to get dependencies. If the app
honor LD_LIBRARY_PATH, then probably can put in another directory. If the
search path of the library is embedded in the binary (rpath), you probably
can still change that using PatchELF (http://nixos.org/patchelf.html)

What are the criteria to become a "real" language apart from being Turing

I tend to agree with Guido's comment on Tiobe index. How come Javascript is
well below Python, PHP and even Ruby considering how ubiquitous the language
usage is? This make the ranking a little bit questionable.

Since you're going to use Java, next choose your UI toolkit and learn the
concept of UI programming for that toolkit. For example, in wxWidgets, a
window as many people know it is called a Frame. Within a frame, there could
be many widgets (small elements which make up the window), eg. control
widget, presentation widget, etc. For GTK, it's a bit different especially
on event handling.

First identify what programming language you intend to use - Python, C/C++,
Perl, Java, etc. Next pick a UI toolkit - GTK, Qt, etc. I saw you mentioned
PyGTK, so that pretty much translates to Python with GTK. Once you've learnt
your programming language of choice, then start learning the basic concept
of the UI toolkit which you're going to use. Different toolkits have their
own way (concept) of drawing the screen. Once you're familiar with the
fundamental concept, you can start creating your UI. Take things step by
step, only then it's not going to overwhelm you.

Salam

Setuju dengan pandangan Kamal. Kebanyakan developer ada kekengan masa untuk
urus tadbir server. Rasa-rasanya developer lebih suka untuk fokus pada
development dari jadi Sys Admin. Senario sekarang di Malaysia, RoR & Django
developer macam dianaktirikan.

That's exactly what I'm trying to say (hidden point). You can't really
compare PHP and Python - it's like comparing rambutan and durian. If someone
ask me (and many others), of course I'll be biased towards Python. But it
doesn't mean that PHP is `bad`. If PHP is suited for the task by all means
use PHP. Even I don't use Python when it doesn't make sense, e.g. quick `n
dirty text processing can easily be done using shell script or sed or awk.

Among the reasons why I don't use PHP are because its a pain to do
asynchronous socket programming (Python have Twisted), stable binding to
DBus, stable binding to WxWidget and stable binding to OO.org UNO.

Cloud means different thing to different people. There's no standard
definition yet, AFAIK. In general, it's about utilising some resources by a
bunch of machines but seen as one... could be OS stack, could be storage,
CPU time, etc.

On a more serious note, I really hope there'll be:

 1) More high end OSS stuff (like scalling your app to 1000 servers,
persisting to more than several dbs at a time and still stay consistent,
 how
to make stuff blazing fast under crazy load, how to zealously cache your
distributed system and still keep your data updated, millitary grade
security, how to design an app with enourmous domain requirement - think
hundreds of DB tables - and still keep high cohesiveness, low coupling
 (i.e.
no spaghetti ER model) and high usability)

 2) Hands on stuff preferably with things stated above

 3) More real world usage of OSS in the industry - preferable outside of
the usual PHP/Portal stuff (sure, PHP is great to do portal but surely OSS
has other unexplored niche that we need to expose - PHP for system
programming anyone? What about a messaging queue in Erlang?)

 4) Less vendor stuff - please, no more 'porting stuff to MS'
 competition.

 5) Highlight the plight of the off-the-mill street-wise OSS
developer/engineer (I've been one for the last 1 year - and it's not
pretty). Making a decent living is like hell! (you could get projects tons
of them, but everyone expect you to charge cheap since you're OSS, plus,
they'll take a lng time to pay (some still owe me money - after 4
 months
now) because you don't really have licensing stuff.

 6) Preferable, all presentators need to present their own contributions
(in form of code, software, tutorial or what not). They shouldn't just spew
things you can get directly from the web.

 7) Oh yeah, ice cream for desert :))

 Just my 2 cents

 Azrul Sensei

Re: [osdcmy-public] Re: PHP API for JAKIM's e-solat

2010-01-04 Terurut Topik E A Faisal
As far as I know, JAKIM is using a proper method to calculate. Based from a
few articles by "ahlul falak", both within the country and abroad, the
"ready-made" algorithm spread across the Internet is not "accurate" enough.
There's another variable must be taken into consideration and included in
the algorithm and these variable comes from annual astronomical almanac
(these figures varies from month to month and are deduced by both
observation and calculation as far as I know).

IMHO, it's still best to use JAKIM's takwim (or from jabatan agama) since
they have their own falak unit.

Flow chart should also be included for Sekolah Rendah, alongside Logo and
Alice. Anyone in Tahap Dua has the ability to grasp the concept of flow
chart.
