Cdmp3 that won't detect on my Laptop

recording from my uSB stereo/turntable
friends, I dind't want to annoy a jaws list with this question. i want to record records off my uSb turntable/stereo. However, when I plug it in, speeh ceases. if I go in to the jaws settings or utility ettings, and change sound card, shall i check it to speakers? it says default windows sound card. it's checked. I'm using windows7 by the way.

Is the external microphone a usb microphone?
