2013-04-12 Thread Alan C

The educational side of this thread has been most interesting.

I thought the educational system in SA was very bad but it seems the
problems are universal. We have private schools funded by the parents (no
Govt. assistance) which have the best facilities and teachers. Costs are
very high but results are outstanding. Then we have the Model C schools (the
Govt. schools in the former white areas) which are funded partially by
parents partially by Govt. The standards are still pretty good but
discipline is becoming a problem. Lastly we have the so called township
farm schools which are totally (but inadequately) funded by the Govt. The
teachers are unionized, discipline is non-existent performance is
terrible. There seems to be no political will to redress the situation apart
from tampering with syllabi lowering standards to keep the pass rate up.
Nevertheless, there have been remarkable results from some of these schools
where there remains a nucleus of dedicated teachers (pity they are not all
like that). The general demise has also spread to tertiary institutions.
Apartheid has been gone for 20 years but still gets the blame.
Unfortunately, there is a terrible lingering obsession with race in SA - now
a type of reverse apartheid. In the old days, the Coloureds Indians were
not white enough - now they are not black enough - eternally caught in the
middle. Social tampering, quotas affirmative action are the order of the
day. In the end, it really all comes down to politics and the securing of
votes. Where do all the politician's children go the school? You guessed it!

Re: Posting photos of street art can get you arrested

2013-04-12 Thread Bob Sullivan
Alan,
I appreciate your comments and insight from outside the USA.
My daughter-in-law is a special education teacher in the public schools.
This year she sees students who are 2 or 3 years behind in reading or math.
But they are the good stories with involved parents.
Before this, she taught 5+ years in a 'behavior disorders' classroom.
The children, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders, were all damaged from birth,
having been born to mothers addicted to one thing or another.
These single parents barely can keep their own lives together,
let alone be involved in their child's education.
It's a sad situation I cannot imagine how to solve.
Regards, Bob S.

Distance it iPhone is about 8 feet.
Not the detail of the side switch on top and the bottom connector.

#1 Sigma 70-300 DG APO zoom at 70mm. With that much extra length I would
expect it to have more information. Still, it is also at one end of the
range so images are often softer. Yes, this is dead-center in the image.
But it's all there.

#2 Pentax DA 18-55 WR at 55mm. Not as sharp as the Sigma, but not too bad.

#3 Pentax-F 50/1.7. The best of the batch. Almost wish I'd not promised it
to someone. But that's ok.

#4 Pentax FA 50/1.4. The worst of the batch. I tried several shots to see
if the results would be consistent. They were. I'm disappointed. It's not
bad; it's just not as good as I'd hoped.

#5 Pentax-A 50/2.8 Macro.Again, several shots to check to see if I'd
done something wrong. As before, not as good as hoped for, though certainly
acceptable.

Ok -- resolution is not everything. Having done a bunch of LF I have a
greater appreciation for image rendering than for resolving power. But
since rendering options are not available concerns on miniature cameras,
resolution is the only question available.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Sigma. It's a good zoom, though certainly
not a great one. Next I'll take it outside and check the corners at various
lengths.

starting her out with the 16-45mm that I'm getting from Tom C and also
giving her a Pentax F 35-70mm for when she wants a bit more reach or
close focusing.

I hope that once she sees the quality of photos and videos she can
produce with it that she'll have a lot of fun capturing the grandchild

If nothing else, we can share lenses and perhaps it will provide me

Auto 110 I used to own:

http://pentax.ca/en/digital_slr/Q/

The small size and sensor make them useful cameras for macro work, and also
a lot of fun to carry around and shoot. Let me know if you're interested in
picking up one.

Cheers,

Re: An excuse to do some more informal lens comparisons

2013-04-12 Thread Zos Xavius
I wonder how the sigma stacks against the 55-300. My m50 1:4 is
really sharp. Almost as sharp as the A50 1.7. I've heard the the FA is
much weaker compared to the m/K 50 1.4s. I see that still holds true.

Distance it iPhone is about 8 feet.
Not the detail of the side switch on top and the bottom connector.

#1 Sigma 70-300 DG APO zoom at 70mm. With that much extra length I
would
expect it to have more information. Still, it is also at one end of
the
range so images are often softer. Yes, this is dead-center in the
image.
But it's all there.

#2 Pentax DA 18-55 WR at 55mm. Not as sharp as the Sigma, but not too
bad.

#3 Pentax-F 50/1.7. The best of the batch. Almost wish I'd not
promised it
to someone. But that's ok.

#4 Pentax FA 50/1.4. The worst of the batch. I tried several shots to
see
if the results would be consistent. They were. I'm disappointed.
It's not
bad; it's just not as good as I'd hoped.

#5 Pentax-A 50/2.8 Macro.Again, several shots to check to see if
I'd
done something wrong. As before, not as good as hoped for, though
certainly
acceptable.

Ok -- resolution is not everything. Having done a bunch of LF I have a
greater appreciation for image rendering than for resolving power. But
since rendering options are not available concerns on miniature
cameras,
resolution is the only question available.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Sigma. It's a good zoom, though
certainly
not a great one. Next I'll take it outside and check the corners at
various
lengths.

You can't fix what was a racial travesty in one generation. Until

We had our own form of systematized racism in Canada towards the native
population. Up until about 18 years ago, we had these entities called
Residential Schools, whose it was to teach Indian kids to be white. The
methods were simple: kidnap native children from their parents (it
wasn't called that, but that was the reality), stick them into a large
and unfamiliar institution and beat them for using their own language
instead of English, and instill into them the core values of white
society, which included sexual abuse along with the physical abuse, and
then, the ones who were lucky enough to survive were kicked back into a
society that didn't want them. They weren't Indians any more, and didn't
fit into the native society, and they weren't white (and they were very
screwed up people), so they didn't fit into the white society that they
had supposedly been prepped for.
And so, they became wards of the state, with multi generational welfare,
rampant drug and alcohol abuse, and lots of criminal activity and violence.

This went on for the better part of a century and a half, and our more
conservative elements in Canadian society figure that the problems the
natives are having is all the fault of the natives.

never has been. She's an iPhone snapper/videographer, but I hope to
get her interested in what she can do with a 'real' camera. I plan on
starting her out with the 16-45mm that I'm getting from Tom C and also
giving her a Pentax F 35-70mm for when she wants a bit more reach or
close focusing.

I hope that once she sees the quality of photos and videos she can
produce with it that she'll have a lot of fun capturing the grandchild
and who knows what else. Maybe I'll create a monster.

If nothing else, we can share lenses and perhaps it will provide me
some cover. But honey, I bought that new lens for YOU.

PESO - Wicked Pickett

2013-04-12 Thread Paul Stenquist
That was the nickname of drag racer Bob Pickett. I shot him coming off true
staring line at Englishtown in the summer of 1980.

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17151757size=lg

When I scanned this today, I noticed that the car in the other lane had just
suffered a starting-line intake manifold explosion, and the supercharger was
coming off the front of the hood. I would guess he drove over it, and probably
suffered a fire as the car must have dropped an intake valve or backfired into
the manifold.

Here's a 100% crop of the errant supercharger. It's beyond the DOF, so I
sharpened the crap out of it. You can see the stout gilmer drive belt hanging
from the front pulley. Something blue is leaving the building at upper left.
Don't know what that is. Could be part of the aluminum paneling that supports
the body.

just suffered a starting-line intake manifold explosion, and the
supercharger was coming off the front of the hood. I would guess he drove
over it, and probably suffered a fire as the car must have dropped an
intake valve or backfired into the manifold.

Here's a 100% crop of the errant supercharger. It's beyond the DOF, so I
sharpened the crap out of it. You can see the stout gilmer drive belt
hanging from the front pulley. Something blue is leaving the building at
upper left. Don't know what that is. Could be part of the aluminum
paneling that supports the body.

Anyway, still hate all your trips to Alaska.
This particular trip produced the most keeper images of any of my previous
trips there, although my last trip into Denali produced the most
unique/memorable - the wolf kill.

That was the nickname of drag racer Bob Pickett. I shot him coming off true

OT: Oh Yeah. I just found the camera of my dreams.

2013-04-12 Thread Bill
I have written about my affliction before. I am sure this will end badly
for my wallet.
I have been thinking about things other than Pentax for a while. I had,
from a specification POV, more or less settled on a Fuji X-Pro1.
My pusher has them on sale at the moment. Today I called the Don, and
yes, he said, he had one there.

I'm doomed, think I.
Anyway, I went over to my enabler's for a coffee and donuts, and
discussed the situation as it sits with me.
Please note, this is a guy who is in a wheelchair, and I expect the next
time he leaves the confines of 4 walls and his deck he will be on a gurney.

Anyway, Brian showed me his brand new Panasonic Gh3.
I'm thinking that my wallet is going to feel rather taken advantage of
for some reason.
After coffee, I went to see the Don. He had a boxed X-Pro1 and 35/1.4
lens sitting on his desk. This guy is an incredibly good salesman. He
engaged me in small talk until I was nearly peeing my pants to open the
boxes.

First impressions.
Fuji does great packaging.
The 35/1.4 is about the same size as the Pentax 35/2.8 macro. It is VERY
nicely built. Similar construction to the LTD lenses in that it's all
metal on the outside, but inside it feels like all butter construction.
Definitely head and shoulders above the LTD lenses on feel, about the
same on looks.
The body is pretty utilitarian looking, actually, and it seems big for
what it is.

It does feel good in the hand, and it seemed easy enough to use.

The images are sweet. Even wide open, the 35/1.4 is exceptionally sharp,
and the bokeh is quite nice in my very cursory look. Between 5.6 and 8,
it is scary sharp.

I didn't buy it today but I did tell him that cleaning my nose prints
off the screen wasn't necessary. I'll be back for it.

Injuns of Canada - Posting photos of street art can get you arrested.

2013-04-12 Thread Bipin Gupta
Bill how sad, that Canada treated the real owners of Canada so
pathetically. Come to think of it, when I was in Boarding School - run
by the Christian Brothers of Ireland - movies were screened every
weekend in the School Theater cum Study Room cum Museum. Lots of them
were Injuns vs Cowboys / US Army. And you bet the poor Injuns were
masacared always lost the war, what with their bows arrows and
tomahawks, and the whotes with guns. And we would clap and shout in
glee, obviously supporting the white fellas. The poor Injuns were
always shown as bad fellas in these films - as kids we were
conditioned to think like this.
Until I saw The Last Of The Mohicans Pocahontas. what a shame!?
I believe these Injuns live a life of hell in the Reserves and
Canada still does very little for these once proud people and owners
of Canada.
Simply put Genocide of a different kind.
I have CD of Red Indian Music Dance, and it is so magical,
thrilling, peaceful, calm.
Well we Indians have not forgotten what the British did to us, my God
upto 1947 - until we got our sweet Freedom - midnight of August 15,
1947. And that great speech by Nehru, when the world sleeps, India
shall awaken ...
Regards.

Music in the Dark

2013-04-12 Thread Bipin Gupta
Charles, that club shot is truly music to our ears. What a marvelous
capture. Certainly has a soul and a beautiful aura to it.
Your K-5 and the 16-50 has produced magic at ISO 6400.
I'll try and see if i can reproduce something similar at ISO 6400 with
my K-5 and the Tamron 28-75 f2.8, which is a brutally sharp lens.
Keep shootin, my friend.
Regards.
