I, for one, am quite happy ;-)

You see - I haven't had much free time to read the list recently, so I'm a
bit terrified whenever I approach my PDML folder and see 300 new messages
there, but... Two minutes later, after deleting 150 posts of ranting, it
looks muuuch better :-)

I've seen the pictures, and I'm not thrilled. Out of 24 photos I think only
about 5 are great and 4 more very good. IMHO, too many look like thousands
of pictures I've already seen.

As far as I understand, A* lenses have never been victims of "economics and
saleability". Still, FA* 85/1.4 goes for what (older) A*85/1.4 and (a lot
older and slower) K85/1.8 I don't have doubts that they are good. My
question is, are they *that* good? There are other lenses from the same time
(C & N) that go for half the money (I seriously doubt that Cannon L glass is
inferior to Pentax A*). Or is it simply the lust factor? -- which would be
very understandable (found myself guilty of that on more than one occasion),
since these lenses *are* rare, but that has little to do with photography.

As for Cannon 50/0.79 -- at least I can understand why it is a collectible,
there're not that many other 0.79 lenses around (in fact, I am not aware of
any).

Oh well, it's Friday...

RE: Slow eBay seller

I waited two months for a package from the States (I live in Poland). When I
finally received it I learned that it had spent a month at a Warsaw Post
Office (and the camera wasn't functional, but that's another story...). So I
guess we should have more faith in Ebay sellers and try to be a little
understanding (unless they send you junk of course).

I got an eMail from the seller saying he sent the item, but after two
weeks I hadn't received it. He was just about to send another one
when it finally showed up.

I figured he had probably forgotten to send it, but the post mark
showed he had sent it when he said he had, over two weeks ago.

Why the Post Office took that long to move it less than 80 miles is a
mystery. But, it shows that sometimes it's not the seller's fault.

RE: Camera bags- advice needed

I can recommend a Crumpler Oh Lord bag. Everything you want to carry around
should fit and you would have room for more, but the bag is quite small, and
unobtrusive (doesn't look like a camera bag). The only thing i don't like
about it are those two wide velcro straps that SCREAM when you open the lid.
Just my two cents,

I have the off trail one. I replaced one of the side lens carriers with a
street and field # 2 lens case to hold my 70-240 f4 or my 100-300 F. I
cannot fit either one of those lenses in the main compartment mounted to
either my Super Program or Z-5. My 35-105 f3.5, superprogram and ME II
winder will fin but its tight. Same with my Z-5 with the old power zoom

I'm very sorry for you, Cory. But...
Next time try to shoot B&W and do your own processing ;)

Subject: mailer bummer

Just opened a package of prints I sent off for processing.
Unfortunately, the package has gotten wet in transit and the prints are all
warped and stuck together. We are able to peel them apart but...
The un-sleeved negatives are also a big clump.

I'm so bummed. I think I'm going to bed :(

RE: Do you ever buy from E-bay?

2002-04-17 Thread £ukasz Kacperczyk

Julia,
unless it say's "just CLA'd" (or even then...), ask about EVERYTHING. You
can't be too cautious. I once got a Canonet in which all shutter speeds
worked, but the aperture blades didn't move, and the seller's ad said
"shutter speeds work". Not a word about the aperture!
And don't believe people that say they are unable to check something obvious
("I have no battery, so I cannot test it" - even if the batteries are
unavailable [i.e. discontinued]
to check if a meter works one can use something with a bit different
voltage; all it takes is a bit of good will on the part of the seller).
Having said that - do not think all Ebay sellers are trying to screw you
('scuse my language) - most of them are really honest, nice people. But some
of them don't know much about cameras (as Frank already pointed out), and it
is up to you whether you buy junk or a mint Super A body.
So ASK, ASK, and ASK, and if you don't get straight answers - back up and
wait for the next one. You won't have to wait long.
Good luck with your bidding.

Hi, Julia,

Ask questions if you're not sure about everything. If it just says "seems
to work well", or something vague like that, write the vendor and ask
specifically if the meter works, for instance. Ask if all the shutter
speeds work, how many rolls he's put through the camera, if it was his, or
if he's "selling for a friend". If his answer is vague, or not forthcoming,
beware! Ask if the lenses have fungus, or spots or haze on them. Not that
all vendors are trying to screw you, but many people selling camera
equipment don't know much about them, for instance, if they are selling from
an estate or something.

Know what you're bidding for, what the value is, and don't get sucked into
bidding wars. If you don't get what you want, another one will come up
sooner or later.

Check the guy's feedback. Not that you should never buy from anyone with
negative feedback, or no feedback at all, but at least know what you're
getting into, and adjust your maximum bid accordingly.

Personally, I don't buy anything expensive on eBay - so far my biggest
purchase has been around $60US. Remember, eBay is Caveat Emptor. If you
get screwed, your remedies are limited - yeah, you can give the guy bad
feedback, complain to eBay and get them removed as a vender (so they can log
on as a different user, and sell some more). At least if you don't spend
much, you can't lose much, either.

That being said, you can get some great bargains there - I have, and so have
many others on this list.

regards,
frank
