You can get 2-5 hits a day if you subscribe to the RSS Feed or an email

liberal about that, as they are for subscriber submissions of the 50s and 60s.

Those are some gorgeous images. Thanks for sharing the link!

Silver Efex Pro 2 gives you lots of B&W film emulations to choose
from, and you can tweak individual settings, including grain. I don't
think this look would be that hard to duplicate with Silver Efex Pro 2
(probably other tools also).

There is nothing preventing you from taking care to set up each photo
with digital, and then move on after it has been taken.

He talks about the dynamic range of film, and to my surprise Tri-X
might exceed the dynamic range of the K-5 at ASA 400
http://www.dantestella.com/technical/dynamic.html
ItemNumeric Stops of range in subject
Polaroid Sprintscan 120 scanner 3.9dDepends on the film being
scanned.
Tmax 400 film (0.58 CI) 3.4d19.5 stops
Tmax 100 film (0.58 CI) 3.0d17 stops
Tri-X 35mm film (0.58 CI) 2.4d13.5 stops
Kodak DCS Pro 14n digital 69dB11.5 stops
Fuji Finepix S3 digital camera -- 10 stops (estimated)
Tri-X 35mm film (0.75 CI) 2.4d10.5 stops
Nikon D2x digital camera-- 9.5 stops (measured)
Typical LCD display 500:1 9 stops
Kodachrome 25, 64, 200 (1.4 gamma) 3.7d8 stops
Ektachrome 100 (1.4 gamma) 3.4d7.5 stops
Human eye (no iris change) 150:1 7 stops

I will say that the kinesthetic experience of using a film camera is
different than that of using a digital. In comparison, most digital
cameras feel nearly disposable.

I nearly had to resort to a barf-bag on reading that article, he
sounds like a reformed smoker or a born again...

In the case of latitude on film vs digital my theory is that people
are far more likely to hold back exposure to prevent burning out
highlights in digital media because it's so obvious, especially when
working in colour. In the case of B&W film you can burn baby burn and
even at max density there is still a relatively soft transition into
the normally exposed areas and of course there are no giveaway colour
shifts. I'm betting that the Leica M-Monochrom would seem a lot more
"film like".

His numbers are whacked out. Tri-X is hard pressed to give more than a
10 stop range, and you had better be prepared to do some really
deliberate exposure and development to get it to 10 stops, much less
anything greater, and there wasn't a Kodachrome made that would give
more than a 6 stop range.
The K5, with it's 14 stop range is comfortably better than ANY colour
film ever made, and can only be outdone in dynamic range by B&W film by
extreme over exposure/extreme under development. N-4 or N-5 development
will hit close to 14 stops with FP-4 (been there, done that, have the
picture to prove it), but you are exposing the film at something like
ISO 6 and then giving the film a reach around to get it to cooperate.

If hipness could kill, he'd be in the ICU.

Seriously though, there is a lot that you can learn from shooting film,
though most of it could be applied to shooting with a digital camera.
There is nothing preventing you from taking care to set up each photo
with digital, and then move on after it has been taken.

He talks about the dynamic range of film, and to my surprise Tri-X
might exceed the dynamic range of the K-5 at ASA 400
http://www.dantestella.com/technical/dynamic.html
ItemNumeric Stops of range in subject
Polaroid Sprintscan 120 scanner 3.9dDepends on the film being
scanned.
Tmax 400 film (0.58 CI) 3.4d19.5 stops
Tmax 100 film (0.58 CI) 3.0d17 stops
Tri-X 35mm film (0.58 CI) 2.4d13.5 stops
Kodak DCS Pro 14n digital 69dB11.5 stops
Fuji Finepix S3 digital camera -- 10 stops (estimated)
Tri-X 35mm film (0.75 CI) 2.4d10.5 stops
Nikon D2x digital camera-- 9.5 stops (measured)
Typical LCD display 500:1 9 stops
Kodachrome 25, 64, 200 (1.4 gamma) 3.7d8 stops
Ektachrome 100 (1.4 gamma) 3.4d7.5 stops
Human eye (no iris change) 150:1 7 stops

I will say that the kinesthetic experience of using a film camera is
different than that of using a digital. In comparison, most digital
cameras feel nearly disposable.

Looks like a good start, don't forget to do a plain copyediting and
proofreading session before you publish this. (You have a couple of
spots where the wording is a bit awkward, I assumed you didn't want a
writing critique at this point.)

That reminds me, I've seen advice somewhere (probably this list) that the
photographer should make clear that any photos the model hates will get
deleted. That probably helps reluctant models relax.

Re: Available model photography

2013-07-19 Thread Walt

Great tip-sheet, Larry.

In my extremely limited experience of getting people to pose for me
(though, I suppose the family portraiture I've been doing lately is
somewhat applicable), I've found that simply reassuring people that it's
not in my interest to take crappy photographs of them seems to help.

Still, there are some people who, when placed in front of a camera, see
a firing squad. I'm one of them, so I can sympathize. And maybe that
helps a little. I was able to get one particular lady to laugh a few
times by not berating her, but poking a little good-natured fun at her
obvious fear. And what I ended up capturing was a moment of shy laughter
-- which, as it happens, captured her personality. And once I captured
that, I made sure to let her know, "Now THAT'S what I'm looking for!"
And that seemed to help her relax.

Now that I think about it, one of my quirks when I'm shooting and the
photos just aren't going my way is to utter an occasional, "Hmm..." or
"Mm-kay..." as the clunkers pile up, until I finally get a good one --
at which point I'll let them know in no uncertain terms. That little bit
of positive reinforcement seems to work much better than simply doling
out compliments in getting people to drop their guards. It's as though
they sense my excitement at getting a good shot and want to do whatever
it takes to help me get more -- as if the whole matter stops being about
themselves and suddenly becomes a matter of making good pictures. I've
even noticed that people will start coming up with their own ideas --
some good, some less so -- but I humor them anyway, and it seems to
foster a cooperative relationship.

With regard to showing them the photos, I've only done that on the back
of the camera. One thing I've learned is that some images look great on
the camera display but horrible on a laptop screen, and I don't want to
risk showing them a photo that might disappoint them. I guess it's a
little imperious, but my attitude is that it's my job to go through the
photos and decide which ones are keepers and which ones aren't, and I
don't have any way of knowing that until I've gone through them all and
processed them. After all, they have no idea what a photo might look
like when converted to black & white with a red or blue filter. And
there's no point in letting them see blemishes that won't be there after
a little bit of touching up. So, I tell them that I'm going to take them
home, go through them, pick out the good ones, do some processing and
get back to them in a few days. They seem more than happy with that
arrangement (so far).

free?".

I've been working for a while on the concept of making my subjects feel more
comfortable in front of the camera, but I'm realizing that it is just part
of the bigger question of how to teach your subjects to be better at
modeling. So, first, I will pose (heh!) this question:
"What to people need to be taught to enable the photographer to get better
pictures of them?"

I can see answers ranging from "The model doesn't need to understand anything,
it's the photographer's job to know all that and just tell the model what to
do" to "It's good for the model to understand at least the basics of how
certain poses and their position relative to the light affect their appearance".

I started out from the premise of "Photo sessions for the shy", and here is
what I wrote on the subject of making people feel comfortable in front of the

For many, if not most, people, the idea of a photo shoot is both enticing
and intimidating. If you are like most people, you do not have any photos
of your self that are not horrible, which makes the thought of good photos
seem at best, a pleasant fantasy.

How many of the photos of you were taken by someone shoving a point and shoot
camera (or a cellphone) in your face, and then berating you for not smiling?
Even most movie stars are not going to look good in those conditions. Even
apart from the technical limitiations of the camera, the background will
probably be cluttered, the lighting bad, and very few people can give a
genuine, relaxed smile in those conditions.

One very important thing to keep in mind is that a good photograph of
you is not necessarily one that makes you look like a movie star. For me

Re: OT: Online Photography Certification Courses

Likely NOT. Looks like a meaningless "certification" from some no name
diploma mill. The paper it's printed on would be far too coarse &
brittle to use for the only thing it would really be worth; not
"squeezably soft" enough.

"Each course includes a full trial version of the software for each class."

Right, 'cause you can't just download a free 30 day trial directly from
Adobe & give it a whirl to see how it works.

Active members would be you, Bruce, Dave Brooks and me. Am I missing anyone?
Apologies if I am.

Members have come and gone over the years with Dave and I being constant for
twelve or thirteen years.

We should get together. Bruce's upcoming event would be nice but I'm still
unsure I can make it.

Otherwise we should arrange something...

Thanks, Chris. Those photos are part of the main building for Ryerson
University's School of Imaging Arts (formerly School of Photography; times
change). I walk by it from time to time and always thought there was a good
photo opportunity somewhere there and the gentleman sitting there last week
provided that opportunity. There were a couple of interesting photos on that
walk that I had to crop out for compositional reasons but what can you do?

Apparently they have a most impressive archive there. I don't know how much
they have on display but I certainly like what's on the wall.

One of these days I'll have to check it out and report to the list. Sounds
like an opportunity to revive TOPDML.

Thanks to all who commented and looked. Glad you enjoyed.

Available model photography

2013-07-07 Thread Larry Colen
Certain topics of discussion tend to get a lot of attention in photography
fora, equipment, lighting, composition, and occasionally even things that
you can do to improve your skill as a photographer. Models don't get a lot
of discussion beyond "Where can I find someone willing to pose for me for

I started out from the premise of "Photo sessions for the shy", and here is
what I wrote on the subject of making people feel comfortable in front of the
camera. I would greatly appreciate feedback, suggestions and further
ideas for future iterations on these topics:

For me
a good photograph of someone is a beautiful photo, that looks like the
person being photographed.

The most important aspect of getting a good photograph of someone is
getting them to relax. It is hard to relax, however, when just about
every photo that has been taken of you sucks. What this means is that
the first step in getting good photos of someone, is to take, and show
them, photos of themself that simply do not suck.

Photos that don't suck start with basic technical details.
Making sure that the background is appropriate,
and not cluttered or distracting, decent lighting, correct exposure
and proper focus. There are shelves worth of books on this subject.

The next step is to take pictures where you don't do any of the things that
are pretty much guaranteed to make a photo of someone suck:
Don't insist that they smile, few things look worse than the rictus of a
forced smile.
Don't berate them for doing things wrong.
Don't criticize their appearance.

There are some things you can do to help them look good:
Be friendly, and accepting.
Give them constructive feedback, on what they are doing well, as what they
could do better.
Give them advice and suggestions on how to pose. If they knew what to do,
they'd already have good pictures of themselves.
The advent of digital photography, however, makes two things possible that do
more than just about anything else to help get pictures that don't suck of
someone.
It is possible to take hundreds of photos in a sitting. If you take a couple
hundred pictures of just about anyone you are almost guaranteed to get at least
a few where they don't have a stupid expression on their face.
The other advantage of digital photography is the near instant feedback.
After shooting for half an hour, you can load the photos on the computer, and
review them. Ideally, the photographer would go through and throw out the worst
clinkers first, but there is rarely time for that. Looking through the photos,
gives the subject a chance to see photos of them that are not only not bad, but
probably pretty good. There is a good chance that even mediocre will be better
than any photos they have of themselves.
If you don't believe me, look at what people put on their profiles on dating
sites. It makes sense that they're going to use the best that they have, and
most profile photos seriously suck.
The other advantage of the review session, and it's important to stress this,
is that it gives the subject to learn what does, and doesn't work.
Between being more relaxed, and having a better idea of what to do, the second
set of photos, tends to be a lot better, very few will suck, and many will
actually be good.
The third set is where the magic often really starts happening. The subject

Maybe you missed it, but a couple of months ago I asked about shadow

I've found Tim Grey to be a good source of answers to digital photography
questions over the years. I first met him years ago when he was Geo Lepp's

He offers a newsletter in which he responds to questions asked by his
followers. His newsletter has morphed into a for 'fee service' in which you
pay a yearly fee to actually ask your questions. Being the cheap guy I am, I
haven't bought into that but I do get his responses to the questions - it
free.

Re: Almost forgot - GFM Nature Photography Weekend Registration

2013-03-30 Thread Bob Sullivan
John,
I make that Sunday night/Monday morning...12:01 am.
I harassed them last year for saying 12:00 midnight April 1st,
as it was a bit ambiguous...not well received but they did change.
(Ever see a plane, train, bus scheduled for 12:00 am or pm. NO!)

"Online registration for the 2013 Nature Photography Weekend (to be held

http://www.grandfather.com/events/registration-for-2013-nature-photography-weekend/

I'm guessing they mean midnight Eastern Daylight Time at the end of the
day Sunday when it turns into Monday.

Does GMT spring forward when UK/Europe switch to "Summer Time".

Grandfather Mountain is GMT -5, but we've sprung forward, so it's really
GMT -4. But if GMT springs forward at 01:00 31Mar2013 when the UK/Europe
switch to "Summer Time", we'll be back to GMT -5 ... I think ???

I'm confused now.

Besides, if it's like it's been the last two years, the server won't
actually switch on at midnight local time anyway.

Anyway, thought you'd like to know.

I imagine any book on that topic now would consist of a single word:
don't.

I have an acquaintance who is still doing stock. He says the important
thing is extensive keywording, especially with scientific names - he has
a large library of underwater photography and birds. If someone buys one
he gets a little money & it doesn't take any additional work once he's
done his keywording.

The way he tells it he basically listed his entire catalog with some
agency and occasionally someone will buy rights to use something they
found searching by the scientific name.

I don't have any recommendations in regard to reading material. But I can tell
you that I once sold quite a bit of stock, and have watched the market
collapse. The internet has pretty much killed stock as a viable well for

I'd used K-5 DA 17-70mm with closeup loupes 2? + 10? combined. Side
effect of this lens structure is that they only have sharp center of the
image and focus is blurring out to the edges. This makes however pinhole
effect. These are my first blossoms of the spring 2013.

Thanks, Jack and Don, for looking and commenting.

Everyone in the scene, except the gent coming out of the water, is
there to watch the sun set (as was I). The photographer with the
tripod was setting up for a standard sunset shot when he noticed some
iron and cement from and old pier that had been exposed by low tide,
and he adjusted the tripod to sand level to capture that while waiting
for the sun to get near the horizon. This bit of beach junk is
something I have also photographed many times:

that guy's got some balls to stand there like that.

The first time I was in Ethiopia I went to the outside of one town to watch
hyenas in the evening. I squatted by the side of the car the took us there,
trying (unsuccessfully) to get available light photos of them coming in from
the bush. I hadn't realised how close they would come, otherwise I'd have
stayed in the car, but one of them passed within 2 metres of me. It really
smelled very bad indeed, but I'm surprised it couldn't smell my fear. I've
never felt my hackles rise, or felt such a rush of adrenaline as when that
thing sauntered past. I'm sure I would have moved if it had come towards me
the way that lion comes towards the photographer. Incredible animals.

I like his trick of using 3 beanbags.
