Steve, These are useful and easy to install. The hinge on your back has a spring loaded pin. Compress the spring, the pin retracts, and the back falls off. The early backs on the KX, K2, KM, and LX were big bulky affairs with a 1.5 X 1.0 inch box on the camera back. With the ME, MX, and ME Super, these became much smaller and flatter. I've used the digital databack for the ME Super and Super Program and barely notice it on the back of the camera. On the later series cameras, it is smaller yet. The databacks print the date or time in the lower right corner of the frame. This is a pain in the a** if you have just shot that once in a lifetime sunset. On the other hand, if it is 5 weeks or 5 years after that cute picture of your kid and grandma and you can't seem to remember where or when you took it, it is a great help. The booklet shows the info on the picture. NOW the date on mine only goes up to 1991! On the other hand my son is going to use it to document the exposure [another option on the data back] on still film for his movies. IMHO, the only Pentax data back worth a darn is the one available for the SF1. It has several formats for sequencing - A00 thru 99 amd B, C, D along time imprinting. Malcolm, When I had my Dial Data LX, I was able to purchase parts from Pentax Colorado (pretty cheap) and have my local technician update the year dial to 2009. I believe that the Pentax Service Department can also do this service for you. So, it can be update... Regards, Jose R. Your reply has come at an excellent time, as this particular camera is overdue a CLA. I will enquire tomorrow, for price and parts availability to update the Dial Data back at the same time.
