Re: SV: Tokina AT-X 165 PRO DX 16-50mm and AT-X 535 PRO DX lenses50-135mmf2.8

2007-12-06 Thread Thibouille
Joe I remember (but may be wrong) that you (or was it someone else?)
said the DFA100 was a Tokina design and DFA50 was the usual 50mm macro
design from Pentax.

Am I correct or am I mistaken?

IIRC those have Tokina barrel designs with Pentax Optics. Note the
D-FA has the same basic 9 elements in 8 groups design that the F and
FA versions have.

Pentax slightly modifies Tokina lenses and then they sell them under
the Pentax name.

Not correct, but I suppose this particular urban legend will never die.

Tokina designed the optics of the 12-24.

Pentax designed the optics of the other lenses issued jointly until now.
Pentax holds patents on these designs.

We don't know yet who designed the optics of the 11-16, but I suspect it
was Tokina. (Nice to know Tokina still employs at least one optical
designer.) There will be a DA 11-16 F2.8, but not for a while.

Each company designs their own lens bodies, and assembles the lenses. It
is not advertised, but Pentax grinds, polishes, and coats the optics for
the Tokina versions of the lenses. Both the Tokina and the Pentax
versions have the same coatings.

By allowing misinformation such as the quotation above to proliferate on
the internet Pentax has harmed its reputation, IMO.

The Tokina's do NOT have the same coatings as the Pentax versions. Or
at least the 16-50 doesn't. There's no other way to explain the
difference in flare handling between the DA* and AT-X Pro versions,
also the Tokina's have a different colour signature consistent with
their other lenses, which is indicative of coating differences. I
suspect Pentax does do the coatings, but uses Tokina's specified
coatings on the glass destined for Tokina.
