[PDXLUG] FC2

2004-07-23 Thread ceri shaw
Hi

Once again thanks for all the advice. I think perhaps I really should resolve the dual
boot situation before I proceed any further, and I will definitely be giving some
serious thought to pdxcolo.net.

As far as FC2 is concerned I will probably investigate one or two other distros
(Gentoo etc) before I commit myself.

Hi

Yes I realise that the dual-boot arrangement is not very practical to say the least. I
was hoping to get around it by not spending a heck of a lot of time in Windows. Also I
do not envisage getting a huge number of hits on the site and most of them would be
"one-off's".

But of course I really must get a second box, and soon.

As far as storing customer info etc is concerned I was hoping to dodge that by
accepting orders via email ( hotmail, yahoo etc) and payment by check, or maybe
paypal.Surely I wouldnt need to store much customer info on the server if I did that?

The site will simply act as a shop window for the goods and as a means to establish
initial contact with the supplier.

Am I wrong in thinking that FC2 would enable me to do this given that I eliminate the
dual boot problem?

[PDXLUG] FC2

Hi

A million thanx for the prompt and informative responses. This is paticularly
appreciated since I am in the middle of downloading the FC2 iso's as i write, and plan
to install some time today.

I am a little concerned about the mixed reviews that you have given FC2 and I wonder
whether FC1 wouldnt be a better choice. The problem is , however, that while I want a
certain amount of fuctionality I also want to be as "bleeding edge" as possible.

I am indeed dual-booting with WindozeXP and whilst I would dearly love to consign it
to the "dustbin of history" I still need it to finish a half completed Associate
degree in web design and site administration, assuming I can ever find the time to go
back to college and complete it.

I am hoping that the dual boot problem can be easily overcome?

Web Design and Site Hosting is the area that I am hoping to work in, so I guess the
headaches associated with running a commercial site are something that I will have to
get used to. I am reasonably ok with Apache and I am fairly confident that I can run
the whole thing securely.

So thats the plan. To run a commercial site on my FC2 partition with the entire
package installed, on a dual boot system with XP, and all this on a PII 350. Am I
insane or is this feasible given that I will probably relish all the time and trouble
that it costs me.

[PDXLUG] FC2

2004-07-22 Thread ceri shaw
Hi

I am new to PDXLUG but not entirely new to Linux. I have been running Redhat 9 for
about a year and there are some areas that I am fairly proficient in and others that I
am astoundingly ignorant about. Anyway what I wanted to ask was, how wise is it to
upgrade to Fedora Core 2 right now? I have read a number of reviews, some favourable,
others not so favourable. All in all FC2 sounds like it shares all the weaknesses and
strengths of a earlier Redhat distros. Is my initial impression accurate?

I am hoping to use FC2 to host a website which will be used to sell various
merchandise ( mostly t-shirts, buttons etc) for some business associates of mine who,
if they ever get their act together, are interested in selling online. The problem is
that I currently only have one machine and my wife wants to use it for email, yahoo
messenger, general browsing, word processing etc. That means of course that I will be
installing the entire package thus making it harder to secure.

I have heard that FC2 includes something called SELinux which is a security hardening
feature. What does it do? How reliable is it? Does it work?

Hoping someone can advise me.
