[pestlist] Lethal temps for Red Legged Ham Beetles

2009-04-13 Thread Rebecca Newberry
Has anyone done any research into lethal temperatures for red legged ham beetles Necrobia rufipes?

I have Tom Strang's fatal temperature list and these guys are not on it unfortunately.  I am especially interested in the high lethal temperature.

Thanks!
Rebecca

Dear Rebecca, why don't you consider of using anoxia method to eradicate insect
pests in you museum ? By means of VELOXY, any specie of insect will die in few
weeks of expositio to anoxia; no matter of their stage of life (adult, egg,
larva, pupa).
Take a look to RGI's web site and see the references to VELOXY equipment

Hi Rebecca,

While having same species data is always preferable, one of the useful
aspects of my review is its showing the tighter cluster of lethal
temperature/time pairs at higher temperatures (Fig 2a as compared to 2b,
the low temperature exposure). This convergence of many species showing
complete mortality at 55C and above within short exposure times should give
you confidence that 55C will kill N. rufipes as well. Deciding if you could
get by using a lower temperature would be the more difficult decision.

The ham industry continues to apply for Methyl Bromide critical use
registration to control Red Legged Ham beetle (Copra beetle), Necrobia
rufipes.

Sincerely,
Tom Strang
