As I understand it, the first use of light to help produce a picture was in
the mid 16th century, when a camera obscura was used to project an image
onto paper and the artist would trace around it.
The first recorded study of the light effect on silver salts was by Schulze
in 1727 who filled a glass bottle with a suspension of chalk and silver in
nitric acid. By attaching stencils on the side, he produced a print of the
image on the mixture. This was destroyed by over exposure to light, or
shaking the bottle ! Wedgewood tried to produce images to decorate the
plates he was making, cheaply. He had some success, but no means of fixing
the image and Humphry Davey, chemist, could not suggest any, otherwise the
history of photography from 1800 would be different.

Jean-Marc,
I think you mean the Christmas/New Year swap list if you just got a couple
images as have I. I checked and you are on that list too. The list of
participants in that Christmas/New Year swap can be found here:
http://www.rahji.com/noindex/pinholenewyear2004.php3?all=1

The PS4 is a more formal swap/exchange and info on that one isn't ready yet. The
swaps both of them are lots of fun and you get some great images from great
pinholers!
Hope this helps.

Hi all PS4 swappers !

Mea culpa for my long delay in organizing the PS4 swap. Some personal
problems + an overload of unscheduled heavy tasks to do have prevented me to
keep I the initial time schedule.
I'm going away today for my lecture (see Pinhole Visions events) at the
Musée Niépce in Chalon sur Saône ( birthplace of photography).
I shall be back on Saturday and I promise to send on Sunday 7 some precise
info directly (not on this list) to all of you who had signed for the PS4
(with the "PS4 participant" sign-in procedure). We shall constitute quickly
the groups, so that we can hold the initial deadline of : Saturday
February 29 th 2004.

So, I beg your indulgence for my long silence ( I would have preferred to be
able to keep in time!)... Do not worry, you will get a good start on next
Sunday..
Thanks to all who signed; I'm sure PS4 will be "un grand cru" !

Hi Zernike,

Just to clarify, PS4 is the more formal swap being set up by Jean
Daubas. The rahji.com website is to sign up for the
postcard-type holiday season swap.

To list members who are new to swaps, the informal swap might be
a good way to get your feet wet. The prints are small (postcard/
greeting card size). The quality and the number you send are up
to you -- the more the better, of course. ;) There is something
cool about sending your cards out to navigate all corners of the
globe, and to think on the other end you might lift someone's
day. It's all about what you can/want to give. I've found it
rewarding each year.

regards,
Scott S

Just a quick note to let people know that The Internet Photographic Handmade
Postcard Trading List is still alive and active, with hundreds of people all
over the world participating. This list was started on Compuserve somewhere
around 1991. This is not pinhole specific - actually, it is not anything
specific - but just people who want to share their work.

If you feel that this would be of interest to you, the simple, four sentence
