[Pkg-kde-extras] Bug#528481: RM: libkexiv2 -- RoM; obsolete source package
Package: ftp.debian.org X-Debbugs-CC: pkg-kde-extras@lists.alioth.debian.org Hello, Please remove libkexiv2 and its binary packages (libkexiv2-3, libkexiv2-5, and libkexiv2-dev) from unstable and experimental. This library is now provided by the kdegraphics source package in unstable (with a higher SONAME, which is why cruft report won't pick up this removal). See [1] for an ack of the maintainer for this removal. Also, the dependency problems that `dak rm` will detect are just out of date packages waiting to be built on a couple architectures. Thanks, [1]: http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2009/05/msg00125.html -- - Are you sure we're good? - Always. -- Rory and Lorelai ___ pkg-kde-extras mailing list pkg-kde-extras@lists.alioth.debian.org http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/pkg-kde-extras
[Pkg-kde-extras] libkexiv2, kdegraphics, and libkexiv2-7-dev
Hello, KDE people. I notice kdegraphics 4.2.2 provides a libkexiv2-7 binary, which is is a higher SONAME than the one provided by the libkexiv2 source package both in unstable and experimental. Does this mean the libkexiv2 source package, together with its libkexiv2-{3,5} and libkexiv2-dev binary packages, should be removed from unstable and experimental? Additionally, I notice kdegraphics 4.2.2 provides libkexiv2-7-dev instead of libkexiv2-dev. Is there a reason for this? I realize it has very few reverse dependencies, but unless there's a reason for it, I think it'd be much better if the old libkexiv2-dev could be preserved. (We can talk about when would be the best timing to change it back.) (We can talk about when would be the best timing to change it back.) The {3,5} ones are kde3 based libraries where the 7 is the kde4 based edition. At the time of packaging, it was unclear (and I'm still not fully sure) when everything will be ready and moved to kde the kde4 versions. Well, there's nothing left in unstable depending on the -3 one, but at the same time it's FTBFSing against the new exiv2, so I was thinking that iff its final destination is to get removed, I'd do the exiv2 transition without a recompiled libkexiv2 (which is possible since no package depends on both libexiv and libkexiv). If its final destination is not RM, then the FTBFS has to be fixed before exiv2/KDE4 can go forward. Which one is it? I'm not sure there is much gain in keeping libkexiv2-dev, except for pure aestethical reasons. There should be no way to move from -{3,5} to -7 without major source changes. Right, but when eg libkexiv2-7 gets bumped to libkexiv2-8, what are you going to do with the development package name? One would want to be able to schedule Bin-NMUs, etc. Cheers, -- - Are you sure we're good? - Always. -- Rory and Lorelai ___ pkg-kde-extras mailing list pkg-kde-extras@lists.alioth.debian.org http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/pkg-kde-extras

Re: [Pkg-kde-extras] library transition proposal exiv2/ libexiv2-5
+ Mark Purcell (Sun, 03 May 2009 18:17:17 +1000): Dato, Thanks for the green light. Have now uploaded libexiv2-5 to unstable and (almost) installed on all archs. BinNMU's required for rdepends against the obsolete libexiv2-4: Bin-NMUs scheduled. We have tools to calculate the list of packages to rebuild, so unless there's something particular to mention about any of them (don't Bin-NMU X because foo, or X and Y need a rebuild, but X depends on Y), you need not mention anything else than please schedule the Bin-NMUs. :-) Also there's no need to CC the affected packages, unless there's something the maintainers need to be aware of. + Bernd Zeimetz (Sun, 03 May 2009 12:01:53 +0200): merkaartor was uploaded yesterday late in the evening, so a binNMU is probably not necessary, at least not on all archs. Unfortunately I didn't see this mail before uploading it, otherwise I would have waited a bit to make sure it builds against the new exiv2 everywhere. bzed dato: btw I think it would make sense to set a depwait on libexiv2-5 for those arches where merkaartor is not yet built to make sure it builds in the right order Only powerpc had not built libexiv2-5 by the time you uploaded merkaartor. Fortunately, libexiv2-4 had been decrufted already, so the build on powerpc failed; I've given it back now. (Additionally, it's not very worrysome if an architecture builds your package against the old library; scheduling an addditional Bin-NMU is quite cheap.) Theoretically speaking, the exiv2 transition will have to go together with KDE4 because of gwenview. However, I'm open to untying them if KDE4 would block exiv2 from migrating. Sure, important sounds fine to me, thanks. Ok, done... the affected packages are: cmus Bug #476382 cynthiune.app Bug #476381 gst-plugins-bad0.10 Ported k3b Bug #476379 libtunepimp Bug #476378 moc Ported (FTBFS atm because of other issues) mpc123 Bug #476372 mpd Bug #476377 mplayer Bug #476384 qmmp Bug #520596 quodlibet Unnecessary dependency, bug #476376 vlc Bug #476375 xine-lib Bug #476374 xine-lib-1.2 Bug #520600 xmms2 Bug #476373 Some of them might actually be ported already but they don't build their musepack support with the experimental package right now. This might be because the header location has changed after I've filed those bugs, now it's final though :) Well, none of those bugs has been fixed in experimental by now (nor have a patch), and the one marked as pending (the one that is not quodlibet), has a comment by the maintainer stating that he intends to disable musepack support while upstream gets around to fixing the issue. The picture doesn’t look very promising: http://bit.ly/libmpcdec6-transition I’m all for getting this transition done without leaving the old API around, but at the same time I don’t want packages unbuildable in unstable, with failures that are not straightforward to fix, for a long period of time. As I said in one of my earlier mails, I won’t feel comfortable with going forward with this transition until all (or most) of the packages have tested patches. The thing is that for this to happen, we’re going to need either time, quite a lot of it, or for somebody to step up and start “driving” the transition, filling the gaps the maintainers may leave. So the question is whether you have the time and inclination to do the latter yourself, if you want the transition done sooner rather than later, working with maintainers on a solution for each particular package (a solution that does not entail, preferably, dropping Musepack support from the application). For example, Rafael Laboissiere, the maintainer of libmtp, did exactly this for the recent libmtp7 - libmtp8 transition: he filed bugs, provided patches, and did a bunch of NMUs, which allowed us to do the transition in a timely manner. So, do we have a plan, or do we just opt for waiting? I’m Bcc'ing all of the involved bugs so that maintainers can send an update on the status of their bug (to the debian-release mailing list and *your* bug, please). If a fix exists, please send it to the BTS with an appropriate “patch” tag or, preferably, make an upload to experimental. Re: [Pkg-kde-extras] libgpod transition
* Frank Lichtenheld [Sun, 08 Mar 2009 16:32:40 +0100]: Hi. Hello, As gtkpod is now out of NEW, I'm myself prepared for a libgpod transition in unstable. The rdepends are: amarok gtkpod kipi-plugins lastfm rhythmbox tripod Okay. amarok and rhythmbox are part of the libmtp transition, but the rest is free from other ties. I think it is reasonable to go ahead with this transition at the same time as libmtp, with the remarks indicated below. So far gtkpod and amarok in experimental already build against the new libgpod, and kipi-plugins in experimental seems to have dropped the dependency, I guess you'll be uploading gtkpod to unstable yourselves soon. Regarding amarok and kipi-plugins, the versions of experimental are intended to work with KDE4, which is not unstable material yet. I haven't gotten around to test the other rdepends yet. If the maintainers have any more information about the status, that would be welcome. Since it's a very small set of reverse dependencies, I'd really appreciate if you could rebuild the versions in unstable against the new libgpod, and report if they all build successfully (but note #516564 for rhythmbox). Additionally, you need not worry about tripod, since it's not in testing. Also welcome would be some input from the release team how this transitions is going to be scheduled. If you can report that the packages can be rebuilt without problems, we can go forward with this transition immediately.
