Re:Ayn Rand (was Neil Peart)
It'd be interesting to figure out what percentage of younger fans (say, under 40) of her stuff would have ever heard of her if it hadn't been for "2112." Hey Jon, count me in as a big fan of Rand's, under 40, and completely clueless of what "2112" is meshel nashvegas getting literary points at the expense of some musical ones
Re: Journey of Hope - long
Steve Earle started the show with an acoustic performance very similar to the one he's doing with the Del McCoury band. He sounded wonderful as always. He played a bunch of songs. I can never remember the set lists. He spoke eloquently and passionately about his views on the death penalty. (Though his non-death penalty banter was the same stuff I've been hearing for a few years now. he needs some new material) Steve talked again about his witnessing an execution last fall. Even though I've heard Earle tell this story before, it never fails to move me. well, actually, speaking of his new material, he did play a new song as his last song of the set, after describing in detail his involvement with the executed prisoner and what the execution was like. He was a little choked up, and went on to say this was a song he "hadn't gotten around to recording yet" and that this was the first time he'd played it to a crowd. It was a sparse song, sung from the point of view of a man about to be executed - ripped me up. Let me second Marie's emotion that it is an incredibly moving, wonderful and thought provoking event. P2's own Traci Thomas is doing a lot of work on it, by the way. meshel n'vegas
Re: Spankers dates...givin' folks what they need
caught the show in Nashville a couple of nights ago, and they were great. I do miss Guy as the frontman, but Whammo has some new songs, and the best part is that they give Stan the clarinet player front stage for about 4 songs now, and it's just amazing. Still funny, new slide guitar player from France that needs to play louder but that seems to fit in well. And Christina's voice is as good as it ever was!! meshel n'vegas
Today is the 99th day of the 99th year:Tornadoes
It's also close to my tornado experience anniversary - and I was thinking to celebrate, I'd lock myself in the house with a lot of fortifying likker and listen to tornado and other catastrophic-near-death themed songs. So, I was hoping you could help with some suggestions... meshel n'vegas

Re: Better Live?
Jeff Wall: How come some acts, usually the Alt Country, Bluegrass, etc, etc, sound so much better live than they do on disc, and others, Big name rock, Country, etc sound so much better on disc than they do live. With zero experience in the studio, Is it that difficult to capture the spirit or energy of a live gig? my completely non-technical take on this is that with some bands, the energy in the room created by the connection between the performer/s and the audience is almost visual, and seems to tangibly affect a large number of the folks who are there. And it's not just a recipe involving drink and rowdyness, like what seems to work so well with a live Wacos show, because I've been the most affected by a live show at some incredibly quiet and sober performances, like Alejandro. Of course, I like Alejandro's CDs just fine, recorded live or in the studio, but I know you and others aren't sure what the hype is from just listening to the recorded stuff. And heck, I was sober for that Saturday Wacos show in Austin and still had a hell of a good time. There is just no way a studio recording can impart that connection. Not all of my favorite bands have that energy live - there are definately some performers that are a waste of time and money to go see live, yet their records kick my ass. And bluegrass music often has that extra ingredient to the live shows of watching the fingers fly and intricate dance of the band working together...how could just an audio recording present that up to the listener? bringing up the fact that a lot of current recording artists need the extra boost given to their talent by technology in the studio is too obvious of an argument to make, let alone one that I would want to have to defend some of the more public alt-country bands against g... meshel n'vegas
RE: The F Word
Barry: I don't even get how people can NOT notice Ms. irwin's "slight" note-finding problem live--on disc it's a different story, seems to me..and I say this as someone who's always liked their "Old Paint" CD and still do--only now I'm aware of the 4800 takes it must surely have demanded till they arrived at ones with the notes pretty much hit! aha! I can't believe no one has ever realized it before, but now I know what the problem is...when Barry and Amy caught Freakwater that night, Ms. Irvin must have just been having a bad night! because I've seen em a number of times, and they've always sounded terrific, and their CDs are great, even Barry likes em that way. So it's not that we all disagree, but that fated night in New York for you two musta been a night when for some reason, like throat polyps (benign) or smog or maybe some bad oysters on the half shell from her dinner at an out of the way Jersey cafe caused a bad, off-key night. you guys should catch them again, and you'll see what I mean. meshel n'vegas Amy: The only time I saw them live--at a Mercury Lounge show that Barry Mazor and I dragged ourselves to in the interests of giving Freakwater a fair hearing

Nashville River Stages 4/30-5/2
Looking good! The lineup has been announced, although no other details yet: Bare Jr, Bela Fleck, Ben Harper, Cheap Trick, Corey Harris, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Everclear, George Thorogood the Destroyers, Hole, Hootie, Isaac Hayes, Joe Ely, Jonny Lang, KC the Sunshine Band, moe, Patty Griffin, Soul Coughing, Steve Earle the Del McCoury Band, Tin Star, Todd Snider, Train, and Wilco. And this is just a start, more folks to be added over the next month. The web site is nashvilleriverstages.com. If you know you are interested, the 3-day passes are $5 cheaper this first week that they are on sale (they went on sale this past Saturday). and SXSW kicked butt this year...saw some amazing shows, especially the Sadies showcase on Saturday - they are playing all kinds of non-surf stuff that I hadn't heard before, really top quality. The Bloodshot showcase smoked with the Meat Purveyors, Neko Case, and a really drunken, really funny Wacos show. And although I see them a bunch around here, the Ex-Husbands won a lot of new fans this weekend I'm guessing. still recovering, meshel n'vegas
Re: SXSW
It was great to see Neko Case for the first time, though the sound problems were disappointing. When did Mike Lemon start playing with her and is it a "permanent" thing? this was their fourth gig together, and he's really excited about it. It's permanent as much as any gig in this crazy world is... meshel (Mike's formerly Mike Ireland's excellent guitarist, now pursuing other things)

Musical suggestions would be appreciated Bill Monroe!
Re: The Mountain (LONG w/1999 Reviews)
Jim writes, regarding Kelly Willis: What I cannot figure out is why her cuts on compilations (i.e. Real: Tom T. Hall Project and Rig Rock Deluxe) practically bring me to spasms of joy and are often my favorite cuts on the comps. But Her solo albums always leave me a little let-down?? this is what I feel about Whiskeytown's songs...their compilation choices rock my world, but I can't get excited about listening to their albums meshel n'vegas
Re: twanglife after 50, 60, 70 ...
Clarification needed. Are you talking about folks who hit it big in a later key age (such as Don Walser) or someone who hit it big early, but have continued to make vital contributions to their area of expertise (such as Bill Monroe)? I think they're most interested in folks whose careers either took off or changed radically later in life (e.g. Walser). how about one of Steve Earle's favorite topics of conversation, Mance Lipscomb...wasn't he 60 before he started playing to audiences? meshel
