Re: Problem installing Asante FriendlyNet PCMCIA Card into PB1400
I think you bought a cardbus card, which would not work with your 1400. 1400 has the older pcmcia standard which is only 16 bit compatible. Your card requires the newer, 32-bit standard. You need to get the 16-bit version of the card. On Sun, 11 Aug 2002, Gary Patterson wrote: Hello. powerbooks- SCSI manager 4.3?
I am using Toast 5.1.4 to my 9.1 1400/G3. I have an external Yamaha 8824 SCSI CD-RW drive. When in Toast, I woud like to increase the RAM cache for Cd burning, but the option to do that is ghosted out and not available- it says that feature needs SCSI Manager 4.3. SCSI manager 4.3 came in around OS 7.5.3 or 7.5.5 or so, maybe even earlier! I just did a reinstall of the 9.1 update while I had my Apple external SCSI CD drive installed, in case the installer left out the SCSI stuff as there wasn't a SCSI drive available at the time I did the OS install (I don't recall if I installed from my external Apple CD drive or across the network, for 9.1). But no change. I also upgraded my Toast Platinum from 5.02 to the 5.1.4 with no difference. Does the SCSI manager get installed on powerbooks? Apple system profiler and some other utils on my desktop, don't show me the SCSI manager version that I can see, so I don't have a way to check for sure what version may or may not be on the laptop. If anyone is using Toast on a 1400, I'm interested if in the Toast prefs you can change the RAM cache size. Brian -- -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Cheers, I have been successfully making 1X burns from the powerbook with Toast 5.1.4 with this burner, the only issue is that for some reason the Toast 5 progress doesn't update on the 1400, it always says preparing even though it's actually burning. I've not emailed Roxio about this yet. Well OK there's another issue, even though my desktop mac with 9.1 and the Apple CD extensions will read data CDs fine from the Yamaha drive, the powerbook locks up after the CD spins up. Since I didn't need FWB Cd tools or anything on my desktop, I didn't think I'd need it on the laptop Thanks for the info on the SCSI manager, that's good to know. It likely explains some of the other SCSI weirdness (as compared to my desktops, which always behave with my peripherals). If my only experiences had been with PB SCSI, I think I would hate the protocol. Brian -- -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Best value 10 gig plus HD for 190/Backup Software
Greetings All: I'd appreciate any recommendations for locales with the best price/value for a new HD for my PB 190, and tips how complex an operation changing HDs are. I am currently using file sharing to backup files on my OS 9.1 1.2 gig (soon to upgrade) 6320 to my OS 8.1 PB 190 so I can stop using my EZ-135 as a backup machine. I am using Simple Backup for backup because all other free/shareware backup utilities out there are PPC only, not 68k. Apple's File Synchronization control panels on both machines crash and burn so I just don't use them. Any help would be appreciated. One last thing; my file sharing is only one way via PB to 6320 because I don't possess nor have access to long lost OS 8.1 file sharing files. If any one knows of an archive update source where I can pick up OS 8.1's file sharing files I'd be most appreciative! Thank you! JimWG -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Outbound
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Sat, 10 Aug 2002 11:29:40 EDT What's an Outbound? Back in the early nineties (late 80's?) Outbound made unlicensed Mac clones by scavenging ROMs from existing Macintoshes. All the clones they made were laptop and notebook models. They had some very cool features. The Laptop Model 125 ran a 15 MHz 68000 which was comparable to Apple's Mac Portable. But the 125 only weighed 9 lbs where the portable weighed 16 lbs. I don't know what the starting list price for the 125 was, but list on the Apple Portable was $6,500. On the other hand, the Apple Portable had that nice active matrix screen (125 was passive) and, I think, longer battery life. But the 125 used standard Camcorder batteries, so for the difference in price and weight, you could carry a few extra charged batteries for the 125. The 125 could only have either a hard drive or a floppy drive installed internally, but here was an external floppy, making it similar to the PowerBook 100 before the PB100 came out. But, the 125 could dock via cable with the Compact Mac from which the ROMs were scavenged, giving you two monitors (albeit, small ones) and access to the Compact Mac's ports. I'm still looking for one of the docking cards, or to borrow one long enough so that I can copy it. The 125 also has a cool detachable IR keyboard which has a very nice feel to it. And there's a port on the keyboard into which you can plug a PS2 mouse. Often overlooked is the Silicon Disk feature. The 125 has four extra 30 pin SIMM slots inside (8 total). The four extras are solely for a silicon disk. So, if you could install up to 16 MB of RAM in the four extra slots and have a 16 MB RAM disk on the machine. When shut down, the battery maintained it's contents and there was a back-up battery to allow you to change the main battery without losing the Silicon Disk contents. Having the OS and applications on the Silicon Disk made the 125 very fast. The link Dave R (Hi, Dave!) put up covers the Outbound Notebook, but not the earlier Laptop 125. The Laptop 125 is described in more detail here: http://www.applefritter.com/macclones/outbound/laptop/ EveryMac says they were only around from 91 - 92 but I could swear they were around longer than that. But that was a long time ago, so maybe the period during which I saw all those ads in MacUser and MacWorld seems longer than it was. EveryMac also says that the PB100 put them out of business, but it wasn't just the PB100. The PB100 could outcompete the Outbound Laptop, but the Outbound Notebooks had 68030 processors and were as light as a normal notebook. It was the whole line of first PBs that ran them out of business. I know they were around before the PowerBooks, and they lasted about six months to a year after PowerBooks were introduced. The Outbound actually had some advantages over the first PowerBooks (less expensive, standard expansion of RAM/hard drive) but they just couldn't compete in users' minds with the sleek PB 100/140 and 170. MacUser and MacWorld of that era had ads from Outbound doing a tabular comparison of the Outbound models to the PowerBooks and showing how the Outbounds were a better buy. The notebook computer in the movie Single White Female is an Outbound. Jeff Walther -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Problem installing Asante FriendlyNet PCMCIA Card into PB1400
Hello. I've just bought a brand new Asante FriendlyNet Integrated PCMCIA/Cardbus Ethernet card for my secondhand PB1400. The PB1400's is only 16-bit PCMCIA II (with Zoomed Video), Cardbus is the newer 32-bit standard which shipped with later Powerbooks. Most likely the Asante card only works with Cardbus. The best I can do is to get the icon on the desktop, but when I do a Get Info on the icon, the system thinks it's a memory PC card. Even an old PC network card that doesn't have Mac drivers will show up as a network card on my PB1400. Most likely the old PC network card is 16-bit PCMICA. - Ron. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Fascinating. Yes, it makes me wish I had one of these hanging about in the basement. If anyone comes across an available one, do please post the news.
