Re: 1400/117 problems

2005-11-27 Thread Andrew Kershaw

JUST DO NOT insert a Cardbus card in your 1400.

Don't worry, he can't. CardBus cards will not fit in a 1400. They
are keyed differently to prevent that from happening.

Marcel,

The wireless card will need drivers. Who is the manufacturer?

For cards from Proxim, ORiNOCO, Lucent, WaveLAN, Dell, Sony, and a
handful of others, you can probably find the most recent drivers on
Proxim's website. For cards from Farallon (the SkyLINE line of
cards), you can also find drivers on Proxim's website. For most of
the other brands, you're out of luck. If it's a Linksys card, just
sell it or put it in a PC. You can't use it on your 1400.

The fax/modem most likely will work without drivers (or, more
appropriately, will work with Apple's generic fax/modem driver).
You'll still need to configure your system for the card, though -
check out the Modem control panel if you've got one...

The CD-ROM drive does NOT necessarily need FWB CD-ROM Tool Kit.
Apple has a generic driver that works for most CD-ROM drives (and can
be hacked to work with ALL CD-ROM drives). Plug in the drive to the
PowerBook (if you've got the right cables and adapters), put a CD-ROM
in it, and see if the CD shows up on the PowerBook's desktop. If it
doesn't, post back - there may be more troubleshooting to do.

Peace,
Drew

Welcome to the world of macs. I always thought of Windoze as "Plug and
Search" instead of Plug and Play, but maybe that's just me.

You picked a great old Powerbook and there is still lots of them in
use and still my favorite of all the old Powerbooks.

Here's an invaluable site for 1400 owners:

And here's a site with a lot of info on wifi cards:

Let's see. The PCMCIA (non cardbus, right?) cards are hit-and miss, depending
on who made them.

The cardbus wifi card CANNOT BE USED in the 1400, NO WAY NO HOW! Doing so
could possibly damage the motherboard in your laptop!

The external cd-rom could work, depending on if it is a SCSI external cd-rom
or not. Some cd-rom external drives, like the ones by VST and Addonics, can be
used via a PCMCIA adapter with the 1400.

>As i said before, this is my first time on MAC OS, so, i know PLUG AND

>HOW IS ON MAC OS?.

Just the same, except for the part where the computer asks for the drivers(!).

No, Macs do not ask, BUT, installing the needed software is straightforward
and the components are not 1000 little parts coded in secret-squirrel computer
names.

>In the manual i downloaded from www.apple.com appear that i will see an

Yes, you will see a generic icon of the PC card, and the name of the card
maybe, but without the software it will be unuseable. JUST DO NOT insert a
Cardbus card in your 1400.

Hi members,
For external CD-ROM, you need FWB CDROM Tool Kit, wireless pc card,
you need Lucent Technologies silver or gold card, for modem pc card,
try some from US Robotics, Hayes optima, or Psion Dacom Global, these
have all worked for me on my PB1400c and 3400c, thanks, mike.

Hi,
I have reeived yesterday my NEW powerbook 1400/117, this is my first
time on MAC OS.

The battery is bad, as the CD-ROM too, but, i like it.
I also have some PCMCIA cards, one wireless cardbus PC Card -
802.11b, one 56K FAX MODEM, but most important, a external CDROM
Drive.

The question, HOW CAN I RUN THIS EQUIPMENTS ON THIS POWERBOOK.
As i said before, this is my first time on MAC OS, so, i know PLUG
AND PLAY in WINTEL, the computer recognize the components and ask
for the drivers, HOW IS ON MAC OS?.
In the manual i downloaded from www.apple.com appear that i will see
an icon of the card i insert on the slot, but, it does not happen.

About a year ago I was on the road in a hotel room with wireless. In order
for me to use the network, I had to load and accept some sort of certificate,
but my IE browser would not accept it. I found out that by updating to the
latest version of IE for my classic OS (IE 5.1) I could accept the cerificate
and
use the network.
