Re: [QGIS-Developer] QGIS.org new website now online

2024-07-12 Thread Stefano Campus via QGIS-Developer
Hi Tim,
thank you for information and your work.

please can you explain how content consistency will be ensured between the
English original of qgis.org and the forks of local communities who want to
translate the content not only of the web pages but also of the
documentation etc.?

currently, thanks to transifex, new English contents are uploaded to
transifex and after translation operations would be flipped to qgis.org
translated pages e.g. qgis.org/it for Italian.

how do we do that now?

thank you very much

stefano

[QGIS-Developer] [issue] MapSwipe Tool plugin

2024-05-25 Thread Stefano Campus via QGIS-Developer
I would like to report that the MapSwipe Tool plugin, which allows you to
split the View in two (horizontally or vertically) to display two themes,
has not been working for some time.
The error has been corrected by an user but the developer has not yet taken
over the change to integrate it into the code (after months).
there is therefore a fork that has corrected the error.

shouldn't the original be declared as deprecated?

Ciao

Re: [QGIS-Developer] (no subject)

2022-02-10 Thread Stefano Campus
thank you for your quick reply.

the previous tag strings are untranslated, as you can see in [1],
so do you suggest to translate also the old tags?
in this way, do the function/modules of Processing and Expression are
searchable both in english and italian?

please sorry for these questions maybe trivial...

2022-02-10 Thread Stefano Campus
ciao,
a few days ago about 600 new strings were added to Transifex to be
translated.
Most of these strings are a single word whose context is: [1]
Context: QgsExpression
Resource: qgis-application

As an Italian translation group we can't figure out exactly what they are;
they look like search tags.
Do you think they should be translated or not?

Re: [QGIS-Developer] [Qgis-tr] Concerns about translations and QGIS overall credibility

2020-06-29 Thread Stefano Campus
ciao to everyone, let me show you the Italian situation.

1) the use of QGIS in Italy, especially in the Public Administration,
continues to spread more and more.
When I say "Public Administration" I do not mean only the Ministries or
other big public organizations, but above all small Municipalities also
with a few hundred inhabitants, whose technicians begin to see the
possibility of using for many subjects no longer the CAD but (Q)GIS.
During the Central Italy 2016 Earthquake, we installed QGIS in more than
200 Municipalities, in order to manage the complex phase of post-earthquake
surveys of private buildings.
Well, I assure you that if QGIS had been only in English, the chances that
the technicians and volunteers would use QGIS, would have been very low.
The fact that the default language in QGIS is the local one is a
consolation and safety for the user.

2) matteo ghetta, paolo cavallini and I are the coordinators of the Italian
translation team. There are more than 60 people registered in Transifex,
but there are very few active ones.
The work flow is this: anyone can translate, but only one is the reviewer
(me). This helps to have a unique (or almost) translation style and allows
revisions and corrections on strings to spread immediately over all the
other similar ones in the various versions of QGIS available.
This is the reason why I don't like having strings of versions 3.4 and 3.8
in Transifex: I work on "All resources" and therefore when I make massive
corrections I have errors due to the presence of these strings that are no
longer editable.

3) In Italy the interest in the translation of QGIS (GUI, site and
documentation) is high; As part of summer webinars organized by the
GFOSS.it association, on July 9 I will hold a short webinar on tricks and
good practices for translating in Transifex and about twenty people have
already registered.

In conclusion, I believe that although there are sometimes obvious errors
in the translations that make the string incomprehensible, it is necessary
to persevere and continue to improve and push users to report errors or
omissions.
The choice of a single reviewer greatly limits the possibility of errors,
even if the various evolutions of the resources of QGIS in Transifex has
led to having thousands of strings that had already been revised to be
again unreviewed, frustrating the work of months.
But that's okay; Transifex is exceptional even if it is hateful not to have
the context in which the string is used.
And please don't make English the default language.

thank you and forgive my Italianglish: when I translate QGIS from English
to Italian I am more accurate :-D

thank you for your explication.
sometimes it happens that a string is first translated and then later
corrected.
it is clear that now the correction of a string present in the three
branches must propagate both towards the ltr and towards the master.
and at the moment this must be done by hand.

now it's all a bit more complicated, since you have to keep the three
branches under control, but at least you can do everything in transifex.
I believe that if someone were able to design the control between the
versions it would be something that really deserves to be funded directly by
qgis.org.

thank you all for help and now it's time to translate :-)

what is the difference between "qgis-application" and
"release-3-8-qgis-application" in transifex?
they a different number of total strings and I don't know which branch I

Re: [QGIS-Developer] [Qgis-tr] Missing translated strings in localized master

2018-09-19 Thread Stefano Campus
I see similar problems problems in Italian version of QGIS 2.18.x.
There are some strings that appear in english but they are not present in
original .qm file.
these strings are not translated in other languages, for example in Spanish.

Some of these strings are (thx Totò Fiandaca for the picture):

http://osgeo-org.1560.x6.nabble.com/file/t378656/traduzione.png

I think that Transifex should be contain all version of QGIS that are still
supported and not only the Master version.
For example, during this period of coexistence between the QGIS 2.18.x LTR
version and the 3.x versions, the two transifex projects should remain
active for the master and for the 2.18 that is still released with updates.

ciao
