Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Problems playing radio streams from di.fm and sky.fm

2010-03-26 Thread MikeDelta

To find a solution for the 'play 10 minutes, then crash while playing
di.fm' I've connected the Radio with an ethernet cable and disabled the
wireless on the Radio.

That worked great! The Radio played for hours without a single hickup.
I've tried to make the Radio crash by changing radio stations, starting
and stopping the radio stream, switching the Radio off and on etc. but
it kept working.

So, at that point I realised it probably wasn't a problem with the
Radio and di.fm combination after all, but a general wireless problem.

In my earlier post I wrote that the problem existed with a Belkin
accesspoint and the wireless interface of my Fritzbox DSL modem. But
that proved not entirely true...

So, what did I do?

1. I switched the Belkin accesspoint off.
2. I tried to connect the Radio to the Fritzbox.

That didn't work. The screen showed plenty of signal but it would not
connect.

I switched on my laptop (with ubuntu linux) and tried to connect to the
Fritzbox. That didn't work either.

Then I remembered that I've had connectivity problems with the laptop
earlier and I found out that Linux doesn't want to connect to an
accesspoint if it's not broadcasting the SSID while using WPA
encryption.

3. I enabled the SSID broadcast on the Fritzbox.
4. I chose 'Try Again' on the Radio and the Radio connected to the
accesspoint and found my SqueezeboxServer.

From this point on the Radio worked as intended. No hickups, just
music.

Later I found out that the SSID broadcast was enabled on the Belkin
accesspoint that I switched of earlier while searching for a Solution.

So, here is what I think happened:

1. I have 2 accesspoints, 1 DID broadcast a SSID, the other didn't.
2. The Radio initially connected to the Belkin accesspoint where the
SSID broadcast was enabled.
3. The Radio sits about halfway between the accesspoints so it's
plausible that it changes accesspoints every now and then when there is
interference from other radio sources.
4. Linux has a problem connecting to an accesspoint if it's not
broadcasting the SSID while using WPA encryption and the Radio firmware
is based on Linux. (try google on this, you will find plenty of people
with similar problems)
5. Because it couldn't connect to one of the accesspoints the Radio
would lose the connection and could not recover from that without a
complete power down.
6. The 2 squeezebox classics have no such problem, probably because of
another wireless chipset and/or other firmware.
7. The fact that it would only crash while playing di.fm or sky.fm is
purely coincidental, it could have happened with any radiostation.

Hope this helps if you have similar wireless problems.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Problems playing radio streams from di.fm and sky.fm

2010-03-23 Thread MikeDelta

New information:

Yesterday I've disabled the wireless interface and connected the radio
with a ethernet cable.

I've played all the streams that caused the radio to crash earlier and
to my surprise the radio played for hours without failing once.

The moment I disconnected the ethernetcable and enabled the wireless
interface again, the problem reappeared.

So it has something to do with the wireless interface and probably
nothing with the radio streams that I've been playing.

So, why does the radio have this problem while other wireless devices
on the same accesspoint don't?

[SlimDevices: Radio] Problems playing radio streams from di.fm and sky.fm

2010-03-22 Thread MikeDelta

I have 2 Squeezebox classics that have been playing flawlessly since the
day they came out of the box almost 3 years ago.

About a week ago I bought a Squeezebox Radio. Unfortunately this radio
has an annoying quirck and I'm not sure how to solve it (assuming it's
something I can solve myself).

When playing radio streams from di.fm (or sky.fm) the radio usually
plays for about 10 minutes, then the music stops (the radio still
indicates the play icon) and after 10 to 15 seconds the wireless symbol
turns to blue (a problem communicating with squeezebox server).

At this point there is no more communication between the radio and the
outside world (like the wireless has been switched off). The only thing
I can do to recover is switch the radio off and then back on again.
Sometimes that even means pulling the plug on the back of the radio.

There is no difference when playing through my own server or via
mysqueezebox.com.

There is also no difference playing the mp3 stream or the aac stream.

First I thought the radio might be defective so I've had the store
replace the unit but that didn't help.

So, I'm wondering: Why am I able to play all the music from my own
server, play several radio streams without any problems except for radio
streams from that one source?

Does someone else experience the same problem with a radio playing the
di.fm trance stream? Can you play the stream for more than 2 or 3 hours
without your radio crashing?

I have 2 wireless accesspoints (a belkin and a Fritzbox) and the
problem occures on both accesspoints. The wireless signal is good,
usually well above 80% and a 54mbit connection. Other devices on the
same wireless network keep working if the radio fails (laptop, one of
the 2 squeezebox classics and a PDA)

This afternoon I'm going to try an ethernet cable instead of the
wireless interface to rule out any potential wireless problems.

Additional information:

The radio uses Firmware 7.4.2-r8423, the Server runs the 7.4.2 software
on ubuntu linux.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Problems playing radio streams from di.fm and sky.fm

2010-03-22 Thread Bassman

Up until this update (Firmware 7.4.2-r8423) hit a bit ago, I never had
this issue with the SBRadio I've owned since Jan. Now, I get the play
about 10 minutes, then drop issue nearly all the time, and I have seen
it is identified as Rebuffering Failed errors. I posted about it on a
topic another person started specifically for this update #. I run it
connected to MySB.com.

I pointed out there that, if this Radio had acted like this in the
beginning, I would have thought it was broken, too. The fact that it
didn't used to act like this doesn't help you much, except to confirm it
likely isn't a problem with your specific unit.

I guess I'm waiting for the next update, now, to see if this gets
better.
