2012-05-26 Thread charlie
Here is another option not many think of and it worked nice for me but
a quill stem would have given me more of a height optionit might
really work well for you. More positions like the mustache but a reach
that is closer at the cork grip area..the curve of the bar is very
similar to a mustache feel and is your more aero stretched out
position.

Interesting. I guess I've never loaded it heavy enough to have any adverse

How do the reverse brake levers work for you, especially off pavement? Neat
setup. For quite a while, I ran bar end shifters with MTB levers out on the
front curve. I really loved all the room to roam but missed being able to
brake with my weight back.

Well Patrick I cheat with those new fangled derailers. 50/36 & a 9 speed 12-27
serves all my paved mountain riding needs. Friday I used the 36x27 for a while
climbing into the big headwind. It's a very pleasant climb & descent.

Re: [RBW] Re: Thinking of switching handlebars on my AHH

2012-05-26 Thread René Sterental
I think the hand position thing is highly personal. As long as you are
comfortable and so are your hands, different people will prefer different
configurations. I don't know if the Bosco has more, the same or less hand
positions that are usable. Some will prefer it to the Albatross and some
won't. I couldn't get used to the Albatross when I tried them and we'll see
about the Bosco in a few weeks after some recurring use.

What color is your Bombadil? I looks beautiful.

Re: [RBW] Re: Thinking of switching handlebars on my AHH

2012-05-26 Thread Peter Morgano
I am sorry, I have albas, totally wrapped just like yours and I only see 2
hand positions that are reasonable. I dont think moving my hands back or
forth an inch count as "different positions." And like alot of high bar
riders I dont worry about knee strike but that could be an issue for people
who for some strange reason want thier bars lower. As for the middle part,
I dont see how holding on there is any different for holding on to the flat
part of drop bars, so you have the flat part of the Bosco bars like the
drop bars but you have sweep back instead of drops. I still love the Albas
but I think this is a straw man argument against the Bosco bars. I will put
them on to know for sure though, I think the 60 buck investment is worth
it, personally. I will be moving the albas to my MB2 to give it a bit more
cruisability around town since it rairly sees a trail any more. Win Win!

[RBW] Re: Thinking of switching handlebars on my AHH

2012-05-26 Thread Garth

I thought of the Bosco bars for a minute, until I realised they had zero
forward reach, unlike the Albatross. I use bar end brake levers and thumb
shifters so I get TONS of room for my hands to move around. I use all that
is taped in the photo. I don't see where people are saying the Bosco bars
have more hand positions than an Alba bar, either set up like mine or
traditional. Sure , you *can* put your hands in the middle of a Bosco bar .
. but it would be of little or zero comfort from my perspective of using
flat portions in the middle .

What you get of the Bosco bar is a higher potential position and not as far
forward as the Albatross. It depends on how much reach and height you want
.
Compared to your Moustache bars .. the Alba are higher and less reach.
Consider your kneesalso .. if you get the bars too swept back , there is a
potential for knee-bar end contact.

I would think running them or at least one to the fork dropout to be
better at supporting weight. The rack is triangulated at the fork
crown bolt and the front rack strut to fork braze on..one going to
the fork drop out would better support a load going up and down.
Actually both going to the fork dropout would be best forming a longer
skinny triangle.just sayin. Of course it might not look as nifty.

You are a better man than I. What sort of gearing do you use to climb
the Crest? I've been meaning to experiment with, say, a 46/20 for a
50" gear but frankly, for the short distances I ride, the land between
Tramway and Double Eagle is ample.

Not riding today because of the smoke.

[RBW] Re: I copied Grant's Uber-Mark-mod

2012-05-26 Thread Aaron Thomas
Just curious: why does 2 make it mo' betta than with one? I have a Mark's
rack on my Bleriot and I've never felt that one set of struts was
insufficient. What can two sets accomplish that one cannot? Please help me
understand, because to me it seems like a solution in search of a problem.

I agree. Not many like these for 700s. I just grabbed a couple. (Do wish they
came in all black casing, however.)

Super-excited for these tires. The originals had a great combination of
roll-speed and grip, and I suspect these will be even better due to the nicer
casing.

[RBW] SF Bay Area Stolen Bikes Recovered by SFPD

2012-05-26 Thread Aaron
Over 115 stolen bikes were recently recovered by SFPD. See here for
details: http://www.inglesidepolicestation.com/#!__bike-recovery

Hello,

There have been some recent local bicycle thefts, and in case you know
anyone impacted, below is an update.

Leslie

The following message is from Captain Daniel Mahoney, Ingleside Police
Department:

First of all--hope everyone has a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend.

Please be advised that as a result of more excellent investigative work on
the part of Sergeant Josh Kumli, we have recovered over 115 bicycles from a
residence in the Bayview and two storage lockers in Oakland.

I have all the recovered bicycles posted on the ingleside website and if
anyone can find/identify their bike, I would like to return it to them. If
you can advise your community groups, that would be great.

Also--I received our first voluntary bicycle registration the other day.

Bosco installed.
I went on an extremely windy nocturnal test. The bar is very comfortable.
It brings the hands upwards by what seems a few inches and closer to the
saddle by a few inches, times two or three. So far back that tight turns
are becoming awkward due to the extension of the bar end shifters poking
in the knees/calfs.
Snap, work gets in the way... more reporting soon.

Here is a visual:

[RBW] Walkability (and bikeability) scores

2012-05-26 Thread TSW
Anyone see this? Seems like there's a bike
scorenow. From NYTimes.com:

(Riv content: RBW's all about making bikes, well, more bikeable...)

TSW
Berkeley

Now Coveted: A Walkable, Convenient PlaceBy CHRISTOPHER B. LEINBERGER

WALKING isn’t just good for you. It has become an indicator of your
socioeconomic status.

Until the 1990s, exclusive suburban homes that were accessible only by car
cost more, per square foot, than other kinds of American housing. Now,
however, these suburbs have become overbuilt, and housing values have
fallen. Today, the most valuable real estate lies in walkable urban
locations. Many of these now pricey places were slums just 30 years ago.

Mariela Alfonzo and I just released a Brookings Institution
study
 that
measures values of commercial and residential real estate in the
Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, which includes the surrounding suburbs
in Virginia and Maryland. Our research shows that real estate values
increase as neighborhoods became more walkable, where everyday needs,
including working, can be met by walking, transit or biking. There is a
five-step “ladder” of walkability, from least to most walkable. On average,
each step up the walkability ladder adds $9 per square foot to annual
office rents, $7 per square foot to retail rents, more than $300 per month
to apartment rents and nearly $82 per square foot to home values.

In the past I never had a sidewall problem with the Original Rock 'n Road Tires
that were made in Taiwan by Cheng Shin.
The New Tires are made in Japan by Panaracer.
Panaracer Japan makes only the Highest Quality Tires - I do not have any
worries about the quality.
I have only had samples so far from Japan - but the first shipment is currently
on the water, and will arrive in Oakland around June 12th.
They Panaracer version is about 100 grams lighter than the Original 24 year old
version.

[RBW] FS: Nitto Mark's Front Rack, Carradice Nelson

2012-05-26 Thread Blindrobert
Marks Front Rack:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/blindrobert/7273623618/in/photostream/
This has been sitting around for a while. It should get some use.
Includes everything shown in the picture - you will have to supply
screws for your braze-ons or P-clamps if you need them.

$80 delivered.

Carradice Nelson Saddle Bag and Bagman (QR) Expedition support loop:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/blindrobert/7273648344/in/photostream
http://www.flickr.com/photos/blindrobert/7273647652/in/photostream/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/blindrobert/7273647924/in/photostream/

Y'all probably know what this is: bag was only used a few times and
looks like a new bag with a few days of use. Never rained on.
Leather straps show only light signs of use. No holes, no tears, no
problems. The rack looks even better.

Please note that this isn't the "Longflap" version of the Nelson bag -
it has the regular length flap, which is plenty long enough to cover
the opening, even when fully loaded.

$120 for the set, delivered.
