Fortunately, the way many Rivs are set up (bags, racks, fenders, upright
bars, random trinkets twined on here and there) it would look wrong to wear
lycra on them. I know I sure as hell would feel weird wearing lycra.

[RBW] Re: We're all in trouble

2013-05-24 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Awhile back, I saw a rough looking guy wheel up to my shop, take a few deep
drags on his cigarette, before extinguishing it, and bringing his bike inside.
To create the stereotype image for you: first thought was he was a
down-on-his-luck Vietnam vet who'd had a rough life after the war, which is not
uncommon for us because there's a vets housing complex down the street. He
certainly didn't LOOK like a guy who'd be riding a $10,000 completely
decked-out, no expense spared Specialized Roubaix Pro with Nokon housing and
other bling add-ons. On the other hand, the bike had Straitline gold anodized
platform pedals, which seemed out of place.

He asked us to check over his bike. So I told him he'd have to leave it for a
day or two, got his name and number, and immediately took the bike to stash it
in the basement so he couldn't leave with it. He then changed his mind, and
asked to get the bike back. He left with the bike, but now I had a physical
description and a name and number I could give the police.

After he left with the bike, feeling sick that we'd let a bike thief get away,
we called a friend at the shop where the bike was purchased. He laughed and
said: yeah, that's Dale, you should see his track bike.

[RBW] Re: Sackville Shop Sack Wald basket

2013-05-24 Thread Christian
In terms of width it will depend on how wide/high your bars are (apologies
if that's obvious).

For me, the large is best because it fits my small Timbuk2 messenger bag.
I have to cram it into the medium. I don't like wearing the bag when
riding (though I do if the basket is full with other stuff) but do like
having it when off the bike for work, etc.

On Thursday, May 23, 2013 5:50:56 PM UTC-4, Michael Hechmer wrote:

Who has used this combo? The large basket is 18 but the medium (there

On Wed, May 22, 2013 at 6:37 PM, Chris Lampe 2 clampe9...@yahoo.com wrote:

I was introduced to Rivendell Bicycle Works and Grant Petersen's writings
almost two years ago and was very intrigued. I bought my first adult
bicycle, a Trek Multitrack, in 1995 and rode it for twelve years and then
gave it to my dad and bought a 2007 Trek 7.2 FX. I was riding the FX when
I discovered RBW and because I wanted to test some of Grant's ideas, I gave
the 7.2 to my dad and got my old Multitrack back from him. I rode it for a
bit and discovered it was too small so I started watching Craigslist for a
replacement and about 3 months later I scored the same year and model
 Multitrack in a larger size.

I've spent the last year or so upgrading different components on that bike
and reading about frame geometry and comparing that to the ride
characteristics of my bike. I quickly discovered that my bike had too much
trail so I bought a new fork with 1cm more rake and dropped the trail from
74 to 66mm. This was a vast improvement. I also decided I wanted to try
longer chainstays, a lower bottom bracket and even lower trail so I started
searching for appropriate frames and finally found the Handsome Devil.

Handsome Cycles was started in Minneapolis by a couple of guys who work
in a bike shop where there is a great deal of reverence for Bridgestone
bicycles. With Grant's blessing they recreated the XO-1 and then designed
the Devil as a 700c version of the XO-1.

The Devil has 73 degree seat and head tube angles, a 45mm rake fork (trail
of 60), chainstays of 43.6 + cm, and 70mm of bottom bracket drop. The
Devil's trail is right where Grant has stated he likes it, the bottom
bracket is higher by Rivendell standards but lower than what I was riding
and the chainstays came out to 44.5 cm with the forward facing dropouts.
All of my bikes have had 73 degree seat tube angles so the more shallow
angles are still an area to be explored for me. Otherwise, this bike is a
solid middle-ground between what I was riding and a Hunqapillar. In fact,
it has the same basic geometry as the Legolas and the 1994 Bridgestone
 RB-T.

I've only ridden it a couple of miles but my initial impressions are very
positive. I don't feel a huge difference from the additional chainstay
length but the bike feels much more stable and smooth and surprisingly, the
front end feels more stable with 60mm of trail than it did with 66mm of
trail. The overall stability I attribute to the lower bottom bracket (an
maybe the longer chainstays) and the more stable feeling front-end I'm
guessing is a result of 60mm of trail being in the so-called neutral
steering range. I know I never would have take my hands off the
handlebars of my Trek but I was completely comfortable riding this bike
 with no hands.

The plan now is to eventually make my way out to RBW headquarters so I can
actually test ride a Hunqapillar. If the ride quality improvement from the
Devil to the Hunqapillar is equal to the improvement from the Trek to the
Devil, I'll set my sights on eventually getting the Hunq.

Back rack is as Eric described, the support structure for a
trailercycle. It's almost like an extra, inverted rear triangle of

The front bag-support is a little wire rack designed to mount on Mafac

I've used a large shopsack and large wald zip-tied snugly on a rear Tubus

zip-tied the basket to the saddlebag loops on my brooks. (I should mention
I'm short, have a fairly wee bike (50 cm), and a low saddle.) I use the
re-usable zip-ties so I can take it on and off easily and repeatedly. All
is secure with the shopsack and I've carried maybe 20-25 pounds of
groceries with this set-up. I like the basket in the rear because I don't
like how the load handles in front. It all works but I wouldn't like it
loaded for all day. I think a small basket and the small shopsack,
especially mounted with the long edge parallel to the frame would be better
fitting and balanced, but obviously not carry quite as much.

2013-05-24 Thread Shoji Takahashi
there are reusable zip ties? whoa-- mind blown. I've a stash of the regular
one-use... when they run out I'll have a look.

Back on topic: I have a medium and large Wald, and I just got a large
shopsack. My first question is: what do you intend to carry?

I use it for extra grocery hauling space and taking packages to the post
office (boxes and large/XL envelopes). For this, the large is much better.
The shopsack is really nice for groceries. I've also found the large space
better for restaurant take-out runs; the medium didn't have enough area.
Maybe I'm also a lousy packer...

I do agree with others that the large feels less sturdy. To waffle again,
I'm pretty sure I'll get a med shopsack to go with my med Wald.

[RBW] Re: Sackville Shop Sack Wald basket

2013-05-24 Thread Swza

Him MIchael,

I've used the large and medium on a Nitto front rack and the medium is more
secure that the large on the narrow rack, but it was never too big of a
deal either way. I then put the large on a VO Porteur rack. The platform
of the rack is ideal for holding the large Wald and is very secure.

And to answer your question, the bag/basket combo is perfect. I've yet to
buy enough groceries or anything else that won't fit inside. And like
Brian in Seattle, I use a cargo net to secure it. Also, my large basket is
on a low trail bicycle which did make a very noticeable and positive
difference than when I had a medium basket on my Ram.

Re: [RBW] Replacement chainrings

2013-05-24 Thread dougP
Vuelta has a good selection, including 44 tooth for $25:

http://www.vueltausa.com/components/chainrings/se-flat-chainrings/se-chain-ring-110mm-34-60t-1.html

I've never priced Surly's steel rings but since I spend most of my time on
one ring that it would make sense. May try one next time.

[RBW] Re: A little taste of the Riv magic via a Grant Petersen inspired bicycle

2013-05-24 Thread RoadieRyan
Chris

I would love to see your Devil but I couldn't get your link to load. I am
a fan of the Devil having bought a frameset in 2009 and its been through
many iterations since. Its my go to daily driver and its current
incarnation is as a 1x9 with 700x47cs

 Specs:

 55cm Handsome Devil
 Deore 48/36/26 crankset
 11-28 9-speed cassette
 Deore V-brakes
 Velocity Dyad rims
 Schwalbe 40mm Dureme tires

[RBW] Looking for a LBS in the Houston Texas Area

2013-05-24 Thread Erin R
Hello Everyone,

Love reading all of the posts and hearing the input that everyone shares on
here for the good of all. Does anyone on here live in the greater Houston
area and have a LBS that they would be comfortable referring?

Thank you for any input you might have,

Erin

[RBW] Re: Replacement chainrings

2013-05-24 Thread MobileBill
After chewing up one alum alloy chainring _ the middle 36-tooth one _ I
decided to go with Surly steel, and there are no downsides and maybe some
real advantages. It's got 5 thousand miles on it and looks shiny as the day
it was born. Of course, no noticeable wear. No shifting pins and ramps and
that kind of yaya, but neither do vuelta or most other replacement rings.
How does that affect shifting? It's a front derailleur (for pete's sake). I
can't imagine why I would care if the shifting were 'easier (supposing it
could be)? And in your case, it's the big ring on the front derailleur _
how much difference would ramps and pins make in that situation? With a
friction shifting system, the pinless rampless systems might even be
preferable. Short is, I got no problems shifting, and would probably get
all surly steel, if I could only wear the other two rings out.

[RBW] Re: Replacement chainrings

2013-05-24 Thread dougP
Do you recall the cost of the steel Surly ring?

When you compare the cost of plain flat aluminum to comparable rings with
ramps'n'pins there seems to be quite a premium for the extra goodies.
Perhaps helpful with STI or similar but with friction the basic version
works fine for 10-12 tooth differences.
