RE: [RBW] New (to me) Bombadil build
Ryan: Thanks. Honestly, to me the wooden rimmed wheels feel the same as alloy rimmed wheels - maybe a little more mellow, somehow, but that's a pretty useless description of whatever distinction may exist -- except when trying to stop using caliper brakes (in which situation they do not modulate speed as quickly). Which is why when I build a wheelset with these rims for a charity build (where I don't know the buyer/future rider), I use Sturmey-Archer hubs with drum brakes; that way, I don't have to worry about somebody suing me because the bike didn't stop right. The rims do have one very salutary effect in the auction context - although my experience is that bikes don't tend to draw much interest at charity auctions, the wooden rims definitely increase the level of interest (and thus the bids). The bikes still don't fetch as much as I typically put into the builds, but that's why they call 'em charity auctions, I guess. The last one I did drew a winning bid of $1050, for a bike I probably had $1500 invested in. I know -- my problem is that I like building them almost as much as I like riding them. The answer is that I ride them pretty much seriatim -- one for a few weeks, then another for a few weeks -- except where the particular ride requires something the current bike doesn't provide. So, for example, the only fast (speaking relatively, of course, given the aging motor) geared bike I have is my Hilsen, so that's what I ride when I try to keep up with the fastboys from time to time. Self-supported touring usually gets the Rohloff-equipped Bomba or the Atlantis. But I can commute, or shop, or weekend tour, on almost all of the bikes, and I clearly have way more bikes than any reasonable person needs, with an awful lot of overlap. There are, however, worse addictions (or mid-life crises), as my wife cheerfully acknowledges. -Original Message- From: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com [mailto:rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Tony Lockhart Sent: Thursday, November 28, 2013 11:05 AM To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: [RBW] New (to me) Bombadil build Wow, just stumbled across these pics. Re: [RBW] New (to me) Bombadil build
The stark contrast is funny. What happens when a bike part falls on that beige carpet? The four bikes look like they could use a little more room, and the Thomas Moser eastward stools are crowding that other space (and, boy, could we add those to our collection). RE: [RBW] New (to me) Bombadil build
I don't work in the pristine area. (I do park bikes over there to make room for work in what my wife calls the s***hole area!) So no concern over grease on the carpet. You're right, those are Moser stools - there's more than a little similarity between the Moser aesthetic and craftsmanship, and that of Rivendell. (There - some Riv content!) Happy Thanksgiving, everybody - I'm always thankful for the entertainment and information on this list. And plus one on Bobby B's shout out to Fearless Leader Jim E! [RBW] New (to me) Bombadil build
So a number of folks on this list (including me) were apparently looking at this blue-green Bombadil frame/fork on the 'bay a few weeks ago, and I had the least self-control of all of that sub-group, so I ended up with a nice-looking Bombadil frame (a little rough paint, but otherwise sound) and no particular plan what to do with it, except I was going to try to do a Tapebubba build - entirely from parts on hand.
