2018-04-08 Thread Matt Beecher
Just email them...or hope Grant reads this post. If that 55 fits me (PBH 87),
I’ll finally get my 650B new Atlantis to go with my Atlantis Classic.

That said, I emailed them on Friday and I’m eagerly awaiting their response.

Re: [RBW] Re: New Atlantis Pre-sale page is up on rivbike.com

2018-04-08 Thread David Johnston
As Keith points out standover heights are listed so you can also do
PBH - 2.54 = standover as a starting point. That is to say the
Standover should be 1in less than PBH (1 in crotch clearance in bare
feet).

You can fudge 1 cm larger since you are wearing shoes which lifts you
up, and 3cm maybe 4cm smaller on the 6deg frames. For skinny tires and
road use go for the bigger end and for the fattest tires and off road
use lean smaller. Bigger bikes ride more stable / smoother, may have
less toe overlap (depends on tire size), and it's easier to get the
bars higher so can be more comfortable as well.

Ignore the actual frame size in cm, since it doesn't correlate to
non-Riv sizing, classic Riv bikes, or anything you rode in the 70's.
Unless of course you rode a bike way to small in the 70's & 80's like
many people did in which case it might be the same.

If I'm between sizes I also take top tube length into account when
using drops, but it doesn't matter much at all for sweep back bars.

[RBW] Re: Quick & cheap solution to clear the front derailleur clamp to mount a bottle cage

2018-04-08 Thread ascpgh
I don't know if brass threads are up to the load? The cage is fastened to
the standoff by a screw that cannot extend into the frame braze-on so each
traditional bottle cage connection becomes a chain of two brass to steel
threaded connections.

I'll stick with longer M5 cap bolts and spacer ferrules, like this:

[RBW] Re: Quick & cheap solution to clear the front derailleur clamp to mount a bottle cage

2018-04-08 Thread Dave Johnston
I use presta tube nuts or Aluminum spacers I get in the nut and bolt
section of True Value Hardware. My local true value has stainless steel cap
screws in M4, M5, M6 sizes in the common bicycle lengths as well. Although
for the load bearing bolts on racks, seatpost, stem you should use
non-stainless of excellent quality for the higher strength.

Re: [RBW] Re: New Atlantis Pre-sale page is up on rivbike.com

2018-04-08 Thread ctifusion
Is there info on exact tire sizes for the different sizes? I'm between the
59 and 62. I like fat tires so I think I'm comfortable with the 59 which is
exciting as the recent sizing has not made me feel like there was a bike
out there that'd really fit. I'd prefer that they did fat 650b all the way
up the sizes but if I'm in the market for anything it's a fast-ish all-road
drop bar bike. Double top tube in the original Altantis color? COOL!

This is the most excited I've been about a new Riv in a while. Anyone
interested in a 59cm 2004 Quickbeam??

They work fine but are annoying on the hand. When I bought them, they only

Re: [RBW] Re: New Atlantis Pre-sale page is up on rivbike.com

2018-04-08 Thread Dave Small
Hi Dave,

That's what I do, too. My PBH is 88cm. Extrapolating from the Appaloosa:
Based on predicted standover height I might take a 59cm, but then the TT
would probably be too long and it would have a double TT, which I don't
want. The standover on a 56cm is a little lower than I have with most
Rivs, but the predicted TT would be in line with what I'm used to and know
I like. The key words in those 2 sentences are "predicted," "probably,"
and "might."

I'll call Riv. I don't want to base a sizing decision on speculation, and
I've come to trust their opinion as much as---and sometimes even more
than---my own.

things like this -- but finally, today, I got a 14 mile greenway ride in
and had a ball.

Thanks to Ben for providing such a beaut of a bike for me to start with!

Selling my Blue Rivendell Sam Hillborne, 55 cm. In very good condition.
Purchased from Rivendell 2015, it has 733 miles. Used only once in last
year hence reason for selling. Stock build (no pedals) except changed
handlebar to a drop bar (Technonics). WTB Saddle. Original Albatros cockpit
included (minus cables). Also included with sale, front and rear Nitto
Racks. (cost over $300.00) The only thing that needs attention is my poorly

missing paint at dropouts. Bike never crashed or dropped. Selling for less
than half price. $1750.00, plus $125.00 shipping lower 48. Will use Bike
Flights. Paypal preferred. Located in Bozeman, Montana.

[RBW] How hearty/quiet Honjo Fenders?

2018-04-08 Thread Deacon Patrick
I’m contemplating hammered Honjo Fenders on my Quickbeam for all the wet and
slop, but, as my periodic fender posts attest, fender noise, heartiness for my
trail riding, and challenges with knobbies make the entire equation iffy, which
is why I’ve avoided the $132 expenditure trying everything else first.

Thoughts from folks riding Honjo fenders on rough stuff and/or with knobbies on
how hearty and quiet and sturdy they are, especially in comparison to SKS
plastic?

I can't answer for honjo's, but berthoud stainless are rock solid and quiet for

We rode there today from their house with the intention to stop for lunch.
The gentleman on the Roadini was accompanied by a friend on a Bridgestone

Re: [RBW] How hearty/quiet Honjo Fenders?

2018-04-08 Thread Patrick Moore
I *think* that the Honjos -- perhaps other aluminum fenders, too? -- are
more prone to cracking if they are improperly installed with stress at
attachment points. I base this on a sample of 1 pair of Honjos that cracked
at the brake bridge -- I've owned at least 1 other pair of Honjos, at least
2 other pairs of alum fenders, and 2 prs of Berthouds, as well as any
number of plastic fenders, of all makes -- so take this suggestion with
caution.

I do think that SKS and PB fenders are less prone to breaking at stress
points; at any rate, I've installed any number of these sloppily and never
had a pair break. And I don't know about others, but I do have to be
careful not to dent my Berthouds.

And FWIW again, I've never found well-attached SKS or PB fenders unduly
rattly or flexy even on rough ground, and would probably choose one of
these makes for the Matthews if I put fenders on it again because I know I
can kick and bash these around without damaging them. (It had PB Cascadias
on it until I installed Big Ones, which are too fat to put fenders over and
avoid excessive (*) toe overlap.

* I tolerated toe overlap with the Cascadias over the 51 mm Furious Freds,
but the BOs are 1 cm wider. TCO is tolerable with the BOs if sans fenders.

[RBW] Re: How hearty/quiet Honjo Fenders?

2018-04-08 Thread Surlyprof
When I acquired my Hillborne, it had Honjo Hammered fenders. I found them
to be very sturdy and beautiful but the noise drove me batty. They didn't
have enough clearance for my Smart Sam knobbies but looked sharp with
Barlow Pass ELs. I ended up giving them to Evan E. on the list. He used
them to beautify one of his classic bikes. I replaced them with a pair of
SKS plastics Riv sold. Not as pretty but also not as loud on all the
gravel trails I need to ride.

Re: [RBW] Re: How hearty/quiet Honjo Fenders?

2018-04-08 Thread Patrick Moore
That combination may be one more reason for using SKS fenders, with the QR
attachments. OTOH, sticks can still jam your wheel even without fenders --
I recall my brother doing a very slow and elegant front wheelie -- he
avoided the face plant -- when a stick stopped his front wheel on one of
our bosque trails; and his bike was shod with a Soma Cazadero tire with
minimal tread. I myself pay very careful attention when riding near sticks,
even with the un-fendered, practically treadless Big Ones.
