[Samba] Samba and Word 2000

2002-04-16 Thread abennett

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am new to Samba (and this mailing list) so please forgive me if I breach
protocol or ask a question that has already been answered.

I am running Samba 2.2.3 on Red Hat 7.2 with Win XP work stations.

Everything is working fine except for when I try to save a file from Word 2000
to a share on Samba. The file saves OK but will not re-open, I get the error
message:

The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions.
Check the file permissions for the document or drive.
Use the File Open dialog Box to locate the document.

If I save the file to disk and copy it onto the Samba share there is no
problem re-opening. Similarly if I save as a Word 6.0/95 document to a Samba
share there is also no problem. There is no problem saving other Office
files, only Word.

I have noticed that if I look at the document properties from an XP
workstation the documents that will not open have no "Summary" information
whereas documents copied to Samba do.

Any help that anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Yours sincerely

Ashley Bennett

[Samba] PDC-BDC issue

2002-04-16 Thread Kris Van Hees

Hi all,

We are trying to set up a global domain for NT users, where the actual
shares are stored on the backend with AFS (that part is done and works fine),
and where multiple branch locations have access to this system. We are using
Samba to serve the files to the desktops. To ensure that we can have a single
big domain so anyone can login in any location as oneself (and see the same
profile, etc), the PDC is located in the same central location as the AFS cell.
Each branch is being set up with a BDC so that local authentication can be
done against the domain and files can be served from the local Samba server,
while still being able to maintain a global domain concept by the fact that
all account management is done by the PDC anyway (since the BDC are read-only
SAM instances).

In theory this seems to be a sound concept, but it does not seem to
work, and we are not sure why. Say the domain is DOMAIN. The PDC is located
at IP 10.0.0.5, while two BDCs are 192.168.10.1 and 192.168.10.2. The PDC
has os level 72, while the two BDCs have os level 67 and 66 respectively. The
smbpasswd files are being rsync'd from the PDC to the BDCs, and the Unix users
are stored in NIS, with the BDCs configured as NIS slave servers.

What we are seeing is that when a machine is joining the domain, the
trust account is being created on one of the BDCs rather than on the PDC. That
seems to violate the concept that the BDC has a read-only version of the SAM
information.

So, the main questions are:

- Is the setup that I describe here possible with Samba 2.2.3a (that is
the version we are currently using), or with the most recent alpha
version, or with the CVS version?
- If it is possible, what is possibly wrong with our setup, causing
NT workstations to cause trust accounts to be created directly on
the BDC rather than on the PDC.

Any help is very welcome!

Kris

PS: The BDCs are configured as 'wins support = no', 'wins proxy = yes', and
'wins server = 10.0.0.1'. The PDC has 'wins support = yes'. The BDCs
are 'domain master = no', 'local master = no', 'preferred master = no',
while the PDC has yes for those three settings.

Re: [Samba] sharing printer without login?

2002-04-16 Thread Mark Kruse

If you are behind a separate hardware/other firewall, there really isn't a
reason to have it up and running. As long as your internal security is
satisfactory then each machine on an internal lan does not need a firewall.
That is all I'm saying. If this machine is open to the world, then you'll
want to find the rule that is blocking samba and remove that... Not all of
them.

Re: [Samba] sharing printer without login?

2002-04-16 Thread Mark Kruse

Make sure you don't have the firewall blocking it. I had this problem a few
days ago. Check ipchains to see if it is blocking. If you're behind a
hardware or other firewall, you might want to get rid of it completely. Not
totally sure if I have this command right, but I believe it's 'ipchains -D'
to remove all of them...

Re: [Samba] sharing printer without login?

2002-04-16 Thread christopher j bottaro

ok, i set the global option:
security = share

then i have a share that looks like this:
[cjb_music]
   comment = Chris' music
   path = /home/cjb/music
   read only = yes
   public = yes

i can see the share in win2k and winxp, but when i double click on it, it says
its inaccessable, network name not found.

what am i overlooking?

thanks,
christopher

[Samba] Problem Setting Up File Server

2002-04-16 Thread hammerd

Hi all.

I am trying to set up a RedHat 7.2 server to act as a windows file server
using Samba and Winbind, the intent is to have NT Domain users be able to
access the server based upon NT Domain permissions.
I am using Kernel 2.4.18, I installed the ACL and EA patch 0.8.5 and Samba
2.2.3a. I configured Samba with the following configure command.
../configure --with-winbind --prefix=/usr/local/samba --with-smbwrapper
 --wit
h-pam --with-pam_smbpass --with-msdfs --with-acl-support.

My smb.conf file is
[global]
 workgroup = DOMAIN
 netbios name = KIWI
server string = Samba File Server
 encrypt password = Yes
 password server = *
 log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m\
 max log size = 50
 socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUFF=8192
 os level = 60
 local master = No
 domain master = False
 dns proxy = no
 wins server = 10.0.0.23
 winbind uid = 1-2
 winbind guid = 1-2
 winbind separator = +
 winbind enum users = yes
 winbind enum groups = yes
 load printers = yes
 printcap name = /etc/printcap
 printing = lprng
 template shell = /bin/bash
[public]
 path = /home/public
 writable = yes
 comment = Public Stuff
 public = yes
 guest ok = Yes
 read only = no

I have the computer showing up in network neighborhood on my NT machine.

If use the command /usr/local/samba/bin/wbinfo -u it shows all of my NT
Domain users in the following format DOMAIN+user.

When I connect to the linux server from a nt workstation and I type
/usr/local/samba/bin/smbstatus it returns the following

Samba Version 2.2.3a
Service uid guid pid machine

public nobody nobody 6522 p112297 (10.0.0.152) Tue Apr 16 15:32:29 2002
IPC$ nobody nobody 6522 p112297 (10.0.0.152) Tue Apr 16 15:32:29 2002

I was using a TechRepublic article to do the setup. One thing that did not
work was the procedure had me make changes to the /etc/pam.d/samba file.
That file did not exist, so I created the file and put the entries that
were
listed.

Any help would be appreciated

[Samba] Canon ImageRUNNER 600, Samba and LPRng

2002-04-16 Thread Glenn Sieb

Hi everyone,

A few days ago, on the LPRng mailing list, I posted a weird problem with
our Canon ImageRUNNER 600 and LPRng... turns out it's not a problem with
LPRng... rather, it's an issue with a slightly-misleading option for Samba
printers, and a bug with Canon's PCL processor.

In Samba, you have the option to say "Postscript = Yes", which doesn't mean
"This is a postscript printer" but rather "this printer takes postscript
all the time, so please add "%!" to the beginning of all jobs to it!" HP
Printers are smart enough to see the PCL code in the job and go "Oh
gee--this isn't really postscript... we'll just process it with
PCL..." The Canon goes "Oh--oops--here's a %!.. must be plaintext cuz
there's an Escape and some PCL.. I'll just print the "%!" and a pagefeed"

So mystery solved... hopefully this will help others out there with the
Canon ImageRUNNER class copiers--and Samba guys--can you change that option
to say "Force Postscript"? *duck&run* :))

Thanks everyone! And thanks to Patrick Powell for the phone call today
which put us on the right track to find the issue! :) I'm more than
grateful for all the help and suggestions I get off of these two lists!
Y'all rock! :)

Sincerely,
Glenn

[Samba] Clearing uploaded printer drivers (APW)

2002-04-16 Thread Manuel Gomez
Title: Message

Greetings,

I'm having some
problems adding client printer drivers to a 2.2debian-2 Samba server via a
Win2k client and the Add Printers Wizard.  I had manually added one driver
set (Generic Adobe Postscript) and then manually removed the same (copying all
relevant files to /etc/samba/drivers (and then deleting them) on Debian
potato).

Then, I tried to use
the OEM drivers (Samsung 1650 PCL 6), but I suspect I may have done it
incorrectly.  Upon subsequent attempts (after deleting all the files
from the .../drivers/W32X86 directory), I am still unable to successfully upload
drivers.  I have a suspicion that there remain some entries regarding my
failed uploads in a .tdb file or some such (perhaps the ntdrivers.tdb or
ntprinters.tdb in my /var/state/samba directory?).  My question
is:

Can I safely delete
these files (or some others) to force smbd to refresh its cached printer drivers
database?  Is there any way to be sure that no remnants linger from past
driver sets?

I have the following
suspicious lines from my smbd logfile (they are out of context, but hopefully
meaningful):

yield_connection: tdb_delete for name  failed with error Record does not
existAnd also:

close_printer_handle: Invalid handle (OTHER)
Now, I can see that
files are being uploaded into the .../drivers/W32X86 directory, but they are not
successfully being served out.  Any suggestions or pointers would be
appreciated.

[Samba] Windows XP & 2K file properties reports 0 used space on the mapped drive

2002-04-16 Thread Chere Zhou

Hello, all,

My first time posting here but I've read a lot of old messages. I've also
searched the web and samba docs and did not find anything helping me.

The problem I have is that after mapping a drive from Windows XP Pro or
Windows 2000 server, the file property of the drive says I have used 0 bytes
on the drive, which is totally not true. The total disk space is correct.
However, mapping the same share from Win98 works fine. My server is Samba
2.2.3a, installed on FreeBSD 4.5 (stable). I also tried install on FreeBSD
5.0 and have the same problem. Using "dfree command" doesn't change the
results. I tried using "debug level =20", which produced a lot of files of
network packages I can't read. The info in the log file doesn't help either.
I also tried using "network monitor" on Win2K but did not get a clue from
the results. (One thing from network monitor on Win2k: it appears that Win2k
is trying to create a file \Desktop.ini on the share and failed.)

So please give me a hint of what is wrong. I am suspecting that it's the
communication between the server and client, but it is not listed as a known
bug.

Thank You

It will help. In my network, all users logs into the samba PDC every day. I think it
could work.

I will search for (Track-It! 4.0)

RE: [Samba] Non-windows Users?

Do I need to add a directive to the config file to tell it to use that?
I just added a user using smbadduser, and it didn't change a thing.

Just create an smbpasswd file with the passwords for the unix users
you want. If authentication to the server fails it will try the ones
in smbpasswd.

RE: [Samba] Fwd: Strange Problem with Access

2002-04-16 Thread Ruben Fagundo

After much frustration, I am pleased to say that I have narrowed the
problem I was experiencing to what I believe to be a bug in either the
Microsoft Jet Engine, or Microsoft networking itself. I have found that if
I move the database to a windows machine with a shared drive, I get the
same error message. Therefore this proves that there is no problem with
the samba server. I apologize for wasting all your time with this, when
it was a bug in Microsoft's product all along. I should have checked the
obvious before assuming the problem was more complex than it really was.

So, I have concluded that Samba is working perfectly fine, and a much
better product than anything Microsoft has ever produced.

[Samba] Making Samba a member of NT security domain fails - why?

2002-04-16 Thread Clay, John

I am following 2.5.2 in the Samba-howto-collection in an attempt to make my
Samba server part of my NT security domain. I have Samba 2.2.3 on Slack 8.0
(2.2.19). The smb.conf is as follows:

# Samba config file created using SWAT
# from localhost (127.0.0.1)
# Date: 2002/04/16 14:20:05

# Global parameters
[global]
workgroup = LFRG-TLH
netbios name = HUMPHRY
server string = Samba 2.2.3
security = DOMAIN
encrypt passwords = Yes
min passwd length = 0
null passwords = Yes
password server = *

[print$]
path = /usr/local/samba/printers
guest ok = Yes
printable = Yes
print command = /usr/bin/lpr -r %s
printer name = lp

[test]
comment = For testing only please
path = /export/samba/test

[homes]
read only = No

I've added a machine account for "humphry".
I've executed: smbpasswd -r tlh-file-print -j lfrg-tlh (the pdc and domain
names) but get the following error:

cli_net_auth2: Error NT_STATUS_NO_TRUST_SAM_ACCOUNT
cli_nt_setup_creds: auth2 challenge failed
modify_trust_password: unable to setup the PDC credentials to machine
TLH-FILE-PRINT. Error was : NT_STATUS_NO_TRUST_SAM_ACCOUNT.
2002/04/16 14:28:44 : change_trust_account_password: Failed to change
password for domain LFRG-TLH.

I've added an NT user account "root" and password ensemble that is the same
as on the Linux box.
I've put a couple of disk directory shares on the Linux box and those have
been available to their users (same user names and passwords as the accounts
on the NT domain)

Can anyone tell me what I'm missing?

Thanks in advance

Try using the whole IP number ... (all 4 octets).

If the other side is a win9x then you need to use the name of the machine
to connect. This is why the 'ip' option exists.

So instead of:
> mount -t smbfs -o ip=222.132.33 //222.132.33/hol /kol

It might work with:
mount -t smbfs -o ip=1.2.3.4 //netbiosname/hol /kol

Where "netbiosname" is the name the other machine thinks it has.
It doesn't matter that your machine doesn't know what "netbiosname"
resolves to.

Firewalls and such may still prevent you from connecting, but it is
otherwise possible to do.

It's like it samba quites talking to the windows 2000 server, during this

Unfortunately the script itself is not what is doing the real work.
When someone logs onto the NT machine, a drive is mapped the startup
script runs a commercial package (Track-It! 4.0) on the client, which then
pushes the information onto the NT PDC.
This solution has a few problems:

The script only runs when users log into the PDC. Some users never turn
off their computers, so the script never gets run. Also, some users have not
been set up to log into the PDC, and instead they log into their own PC's.
A better solution would be to allow an update of installed software upon
demand, but that solution was much more costly ($4000 as opposed to about
$400).

I wouldn't recommend the current solution we're using, since there's no
way of guaranteeing that the information required gets gathered in a timely
manner.

[Samba] diagnosis test #3 smbclient -L BIGSERVER

2002-04-16 Thread Darin DeCounter

On step #3 of the Diagnosis.txt (/samba/docs), when I issue 'smbclient -L
testsrv', it prompts me for a password. I just have to hit ENTER and it
displays all the shares like it should...but this step mentions nothing
about being prompted for a password. Why would I be getting the password
prompt? Thank you.

[Samba] Authentication Problem

2002-04-16 Thread _pkliste

Ok, sorry folks, but here I am again:

I installed samba2.2.3a on a suse 7.3 and everything (well, I tried an 'everybody'
share and it's ok) works fine until it comes to winbind et al.

The very first thing that's supposed to be tested is the wbinfo -g or -u. It tells me
'Error looking up domain users'. The winbindd logfile states '002c status:
NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED'.
The server I want to authenticate against is w2k server sp2. The security log on the
w2k server shows anonymous_authentication failed 'MAX_REACHED' (I translated this, in
german it's 'MAX_ERLAUBT'.

The effect is that I don't get a list of users in the domain and I cannot
authenticate. The join process seems to have worked, a MACHINE.SID and secrets.tdb
have been created.

[Samba] pam_smbpasswd+ldap versus smbd+ldap problem

2002-04-16 Thread Pierre Belanger

Hi,

I downloaded a few minutes ago the latest 2.2.4-pre from the CVS.
Note that I haven't tried any previous version with the current
setup.

Here's what I am doing. I compiled 2.2.4-pre with :

./configure --without-winbind --with-acl-support --with-utmp
--with-syslog --with-pam --with-automount --with-pam_smbpass
--with-ldapsam

After installing the PAM module under Solaris 8, I am able to
use the "migrate" option for the module as well as authentication
using the ntPassword attribute from the LDAP server.

So far so good! Now the problem...

With Samba, it doesn't work at all. It keeps on saying :

  NT MD4 password check failed

for no reason!!! I know the password in the LDAP is good.

Here's the log, I removed the lmPassword and ntPassword.

I find this very troubling, and I hope the restriction extends no further
than the documentation.

I've written a very brief article about this, here:

http://megarad.com/article.php?sid=714

Perhaps this will garner a little more attention. If anybody's interested
in chiming in on that article, or correcting any errors I may have made,
please feel free. Any responses to this email will be read with an eye
toward making sure I've got my facts straight, as well.

Just create an smbpasswd file with the passwords for the unix users
you want. If authentication to the server fails it will try the ones
in smbpasswd.

On step #3 of the Diagnosis.txt (/samba/docs), when I issue 'smbclient -L

displays all the shares like it should...but this step mentions nothing
about being prompted for a password. Why would I be getting the password
prompt? Thank you.

RE: [Samba] CIFS & SMB Microsoft licenses

2002-04-16 Thread Sanjiv Bawa

This is the most ludicrous thing I have ever heard. How on earth are they
going to prove that someone ever read something that was publicly available.
Especially when SMB is such a widely understood protocol.

I don't think this is targeted towards samba per se, as much as microsofts
huge customers that bring them their bread and lard. Hey corporate CIO,
don't you dare or else

Monopolies always attempt to maintain their monopolies. These guys are no
different than standard oil and ma bell. If anything they are much worse, in
that after losing 4 times, they still keep doing the same thing.

The only way to fight this is to deprive them of their client plaform.

So, support the following projects
Lindows www.lindows.com
WineHQ www.winhq.org
Star Office www.staroffice.org

and quit using Microsoft junk on your desktops. And start pushing
alternatives to your clients and organizations.

RE: [Samba] installation question

2002-04-16 Thread Blanchard, Michael
Title: Message

If
you're new to linux, I suggest you download the rpm from www.samba.org.  A redhat install typically
expects samba in places where just running "./configure" without options will
not place the files.  This isn't really the fault of samba or redhat, it's
just "different".  If you use the redhat rpm, it will put everything where
redhat likes it to go, even putting in the smb /etc/init.d/smb file in for
you.  So I would delete your samba stuff and just get the rpm unless you
HAVE to have something that's not compiled into the rpm, which is unlikely
unless you're running LDAP or something, which would be amazing since you say
you're new to linux. :)  So to wrap it up, RPM = good for beginners,
.TAR.GZ = good if you're masochistic or need something not compiled in by
default.

Good Idea to check the installed software on PC's with a script logon.

Could you give me more information on this script? Is it working? How it get info from
the PC's?

Now, about having NFS mount, I had the some problem once but the samba server (I do
not remember samba version) was a SUN Ultra sparcI - solaris 2.51, sharing a NFS mount
from a LINUX box (it was an emergency setup ! ). I had to leave with this problem for
a while.

Thank you

[Samba] Microsoft - The settlement that isn't

We the people, in order to promote fair opportunity for competition

Of greatest concern is Microsoft's continued ability to eliminate

complaint that Microsoft is still able to harm competition and consumers
with its practices.

The Microsoft penalty that isn't
By Bruce Perens
April 15, 2002, 12:00 PM PT

In its antitrust settlement with the Justice Department and nine states,
Microsoft promised to publish technology that would allow competing
products to interoperate with Windows. But Microsoft has sidestepped the
penalty by crafting a technology license that excludes the company's
only viable competitor.

Linux, which was described by Windows Division Vice President Brian
Valentine as the long-term threat against Microsoft's core business, is
banned from interoperating with its common Internet file system,
otherwise known as Windows File and Printer Sharing.

The Microsoft license specifically excludes software under the General
Public License, commonly known as the GPL. The GPL is the software
license used by Linux and by SAMBA, a popular open-source program that
allows non-Microsoft systems to share files and printers with Windows.
Microsoft has also banned software under the Lesser General Public
License, or LGPL. That license is used by the Mozilla Web browser, the
GNOME graphical desktop, and many of the software libraries shipped with
Linux. The GPL and LGPL are the most popular licenses used for
open-source software, and cover tens of thousands of free programs.

A second Microsoft license on extensions used in Windows 2000 and
Windows XP will require royalty payments, excluding all software
produced by the open-source developer community. Because Microsoft has
patented features of the file-sharing protocol, open-source developers
who implement the protocol could be sued for infringement.

Microsoft is likely to use this same license on future "standards,"
embedding patented features in the standards and excluding free software
like Linux from use of the patents. While patented features in file
sharing would handicap Linux from being able to exchange files over an
office LAN (local area network), similar future efforts could ban
open-source tools like OpenOffice and AbiWord from operating with
documents created using Microsoft Office, and Web browsers like Mozilla
from viewing Web sites produced with Microsoft software.

It's the share-and-share-alike provision of the GPL that Microsoft can't
accept--the requirement that modified versions of software under the
license be available for anyone to further distribute and modify. But
this is the aspect of the license that made Linux a threat to Microsoft
while even the mighty IBM could not dent Microsoft's monopoly with its
OS/2 operating system.

The GPL, brainchild of MacArthur "genius" grant recipient Richard
Stallman and his GNU Project, creates a fair partnership among many
thousands of independent software developers that is difficult for
Microsoft to swallow. Microsoft previously responded by influencing
government and universities to choose weaker OS licenses that lack the
share-and-share-alike provision.

Because Microsoft can make proprietary and patented enhancements to
software under the weaker licenses, it can apply its embrace-and-enhance
strategy: Microsoft introduces incompatibility into the Microsoft
version of the software, and forces the public version of the software
out of the market because it won't interoperate with the Windows
version. Only a vendor that dominates the market could use such a
strategy to maintain its monopoly. The GPL-licensed Linux system is the
only one that has been able to make a dent in that monopoly.

Microsoft executives justify their position with the mantra, "We are for
strong intellectual-property protection." But only when it's to
Microsoft's advantage; otherwise, Microsoft wouldn't be pressuring
others to weaken their open-source licensing. Even during the penalty
phase of their antitrust prosecution, the company still can't settle for
a piece of the software industry pie. Although Microsoft's compromise
with the U.S. Department of Justice is crafted to make it seem that a
competitor could enter, it still leaves Microsoft owning the whole pie.

This situation also illustrates the dichotomy of software patents versus
copyr

[Samba] why do i have so much trouble accessing an nt box?

2002-04-16 Thread chip . wiegand

I have, on my desk, a FreeBSD-4.5 box and a NT4 box, connected
to a kvm switch, and ethernet. I have samba installed and working
correctly, and using XFSamba I can see the shares on the NT box.
No matter how I set the permissions on the NT box shared folders,
I get access denied when trying to access those shares from the
FreeBSD box. I also have a printer connected to the FreeBSD box, works
great. I can see the printer in the NT Network Neighborhood, but
cannot get anything to print to it from NT, I get access denied on
the NT box. On the NT box in network neighborhood I can see and
access files on the FreeBSD box without any problems. I have had no
problems with any of this stuff when using FreeBSD and win95 or win98,
only with NT. I do have encrypt passwords = yes set in smb.conf. I am
using Samba-2.2.2_3.

Any ideas why accessing NT is such a pain in the a..?

[Samba] users.map break ability for win users to use samba shares?

2002-04-16 Thread Abramson, Joseph

Hello:

Please excuse for long explanation:

I have Sun 2.6 with Samba 2.2.2 to share directories on Solaris
box for Windows users. They are authorized by NT domain.

For Win users to access to shared Unix shared directories I
set up (through SWAM): Security Option - DOMAIN, valid users - @group1 @group2
@group3, without users.map

I created locked Unix users with names equivalent their names
on NT domain. Windows users could access their Samba shares no problems.

But one Win User has its username longer than 8 characters (verylonguser)
which is not accepted by Solaris. So, I created equivalent of this user on Unix
with 8 letters username (longuser),  added to [global] entry users map users.map
and created users.map file with entry longuser = verylonguser. When I commit
the change, this user could use its share on Samba, but all other users on
Network could not. And what is worse, when I took the users.map out of smb.conf
and commit once more the users still cannot connect (they are asked for
password, which is denied.

Pleaseeese, advice.

Note:

Is winbind needed? I could not find service winbind
anywhere?

[Samba] Samba to NFS gateway; incorrect mounted space shown on clients

2002-04-16 Thread Chris Knadle

Greetings - and hats off to the Samba coders. ;-) You guys are awesome.
Likewise I would like to thank the entire open source community for
your hard work, generosity, and for their tolerance. :-/

For those in a rush to want to know what the interesting problem
is, skip down to the heading "The Problem:" at the end of the e-mail.
Then come back and read the rest if you're interested.
(Yes, I know I'm verbose - as the saying goes, if I had time I'd write
 a shorter letter.)

What we're doing:
We've got a machine running Samba 2.2.3a which is acting both as a PDC for
XP machines _as well as_ acting as an SMB <--> NFS gateway.
(I.E. Windows file sharing of nfs automounted directories).
Yes, we've gotten that all working. No, it wasn't easy.

It's a RedHat 7.2 machine running a stock kernel, but has been updated
   with Samba 2.2.3a.

In brief, the network diagram looks something like this:

(Note: this diagram was made in a console text editor)

UNIX NFS machines Samba machine Windows clients

 nfs1 ---\ /- client1
\/
 nfs2 -\ /--- client2
  \ Samba ---/
 nfs_automounter -/ eth0 eth1\ client3
 / \
 nfs3 /\-- client4
   / \
 nfs4 --/\ client5
  . .
  . .
  . .

Why we did this:

   1. We were dumb and started using Windows XP for clients, not
realizing that the nfs client programs that we bought did not
support Windows XP. Upon further investigation, none of the
nfs clients support automounting, which sucks.

   2. We're cheap. We run a tight budget, and we just don't have the
funds available to buy nfs clients at $120 a pop for all the
   machines.

   3. Integration considerations. We wanted a single way to deal with
all the Windows clients regardless of OS type. Right now we've
got many different nfs clients being used (Solstice, WRQ, and
Hummingbird) and none of them do everything on all versions of
   Windows.

   4. Ease of install. With this Samba solution, there is no need to
install any software on each client to get access to file shares.

   5. Peace of mind. It's free software, there are no licenses to have
   to worry about.

   6. Support. Yes I said support. Of the commercial vendors we deal
with, we have many that won't bother to return a phone call until
a week or so later. By then we've either worked it out for
ourselves or we got somebody we knew to do help.
The open source community has more often than not been our
solution for supporting our problems _anyway_. ;-)

What's working:

   - The user's home directories are mounted through nfs automount, and
that seems to work (for the most part), even though the actual location
of the nfs share may be on one of 5 machines, yet it appears that all
 users are under /home.

   - The Samba machine is able to be a Primary Domain Controller, even
for XP machines. Unfortunately we're probably not going to use
this capacity due to the requirement for automatic failover to a
BDC. In addition, we're not really using the PDC for authentication
purposes anyway, so it might not matter in our case.
The main thing we're getting out of the PDC is the ability to run a
script upon login to track installed software on PC's.

   - We've set up two interfaces on the Samba machine with a firewall to
try to separate smb requests from nfs requests, which seems to be
 working satisfactorily.

   - The box has got software root raid with the ability to boot up on
both drives. Installing grub on both drives to allow for bootup
on both drives was a bit tricky.

   - We set up a cool text "dashboard" which uses splitvt to split the
terminal window up _three_ ways (ran splitvt, in the upper window
ran splitvt again.) The bottom window runs top, the uppermost
window runs sar to show network bandwidth information, the middle
 window shows raid status.
We used the 'open' command to run the script in an unused tty at
 boot time without a login.

The problem:

   - The Samba machine seems to report the incorrect amount of free space to
Windows clients on some NFS shares, but reports correctly on others.
I.E. Windows clients mount "drives" using the "net use" command, and
when the free space is checked, some of the mounts show 20

We're consulting the legal staff at the FSF for a definitive
answer on this. More when we have a US legal opinion.

In the meantime, don't panic. We don't think we infringe
their patent claims (but this is why we're getting a legal
opinion - to make sure this is the case) and the license
is for CIFS *documentation*, not any code at present.

The opinion of someone who has seen this documentation
(not me) is that there is nothing in it that Samba doesn't
already implement. In fact it is a significant subset of
the SNIA CIFS documentation which the Samba Team has
helped prepare. This license seems to have been created (IMHO)
to create fear uncertainty and doubt amongst Samba users
and vendors using Samba - such as the comments that have
been appearing on this list :-). It's a classic marketing
tactic I believe.

Jeremy.

By free, folks should bear in mind that it is not free in both the "free
beer" sense as well as the "free speech" sense, i.e. it costs money to buy
it and it is both closed source (as far as I can tell from the web site,
anyway) and restrictively licensed (compared to the GPL or BSD licenses).

Jim,

Did you run the Microsoft Personal Security Advisor (MPSA)
on this machine? I seem to remember having problems with
shares after setting RestrictAnonymous=2. Setting it to
1 fixed the issues.

RestrictAnonymous Values and their basic effect:
0 None. Rely on default permissions
1 Do not allow enumeration of SAM accounts and names
2 No access without explicit anonymous permissions

The red X's are okay, I think; Win2k restores mapped
drive links, but doesn't connect to them until you
explicitly do so. This saves a lot of bandwidth by
not handhaking idle mappings, and speeds up shutdown
and sleeping by not having to handshake disconnections.
It's actually a good thing, I think. Remember Win9x's
hang on shutdown? That was due to mapped drive issues.

I think Intel and Microsoft jointly developed SMB , i guess they still might
have patent on it
though microsoft changed SMB and called it CIFS.

My understanding is that microsoft adoped SMB. Do they actually have a

use of its patents about SMB and CIFS protocols only to companies that
won't use GPL/LGPL licenses to interoperate with Win2000 and WinXP.

[Samba] Domain Users group problem in winbind

2002-04-16 Thread Erwin Fritz

I'm running Samba 2.2.3a on Solaris 8, with winbind. I've managed to
configure it so that I don't need local users anymore; the NT domain users
can telnet in to the UNIX box without problem. Mounting Samba shares works
just fine as well.

One thing I've noticed is really turning out to be a stumbling block. If a
user telnets to a UNIX box using his NT domain account (DOMAIN+userid),
winbind appears to assign him the group DOMAIN+Domain Users. Now, if that
user tries to create a file, but DOMAIN+Domain Users doesn't have write
permission on the directory, the file creation fails.

For example, let's say that the user is in directory testdir. That
directory has an owner of DOMAIN+otheruser, a group of DOMAIN+somegroup,
and permissions of 775. Assume also that DOMAIN+userid is a member of
DOMAIN+somegroup.

The user can't create files in that directory unless he uses the UNIX
'group' command to change his group to DOMAIN+somegroup. If I change the
permissions on the directory to 777, then any file created by the user gets
assigned a group of DOMAIN+Domain Users.

Am I missing something here? Has anyone encountered this?

[Samba] DFS and MS explorer

2002-04-16 Thread Markus Korth

Greetings !

We are currently testing samba together with DFS. All is working fine
with one exception: From time to time (but too often) the user gets the
message
"n:\bla\path\to\somewhere isn't available.
The directory has been moved or deleted."
when accessing a directory with the explorer.
The message above is translated from german, therefore the original
english message might look a little bit different.
I know definitively that the above directory is still there: When
clicking somewhere else and back into the corresponding directory
explorer happily shows its content.
OS: Linux with kernel 2.4.17, samba 2.2.3a
Client: NT 4.0 SP6a and Win2K (with SP2, I think).

Just an FYI: I've seen this "red X" occur on many different Windows machines
connecting in a native Windows environment. I think it points to a problem
in Window's icon cache rather than any networking facility.

In other words, if you can legitimately access the share, the icon is
meaningless (in my experience).

[Samba] Access denied when using samba as a profile server

2002-04-16 Thread Andrew Watkins

Hi,

I have been using samba for a long time, but since our windows 2000 machine
are becoming unreliable (fileserver problems). I want to move users profiles
onto our UNIX/SAMBA server.

The problem I am getting is that when a user logs onto a client it is
unable to copy the users profile from the SAMBA drive to the local C drive.

I.e. unable to copy \\UNIXhost\user\winntpro\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\brndlog.txt to C:\Document and Settings\user\winntpro\Application
Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\brndlog.txt.

ACCESS DENIED.

Thanks

Andrew Watkins

Maybe Sendmail Calendar Server is a worthy replacement, just read about
it myself. We are using sendmail on our mail servers anyway, we might
give it a try.

All,

Please help. I am trying to enable a share from a server with an IP address of
172.2.xxx.xxx to a server with an IP address of 10.100.xxx.xxx.

They are both on my WAN, and I have complete access to both, yet I get an error 53
when trying to browse the 172 machine from the 10 machine. I'm sure it's just one
parameter change, I just can't find it.

How do i use smbpasswd to change the password of a user on a NT domain without
the OLD password? (As administrator). Or, if that's not possible, is there
another way?

[Samba] printing problem from 2.2.3a

2002-04-16 Thread christoph . beyer

Hi Jerry et al,

After upgrade to version 2.2.3a I still experience a printing problem.
Various applications under NT don't print on the first try but give back
something like 'RPC server not available' the .txt editor is one of those
applications, but there are many ohers that don't work propperly either.
Are there any plans to investigate on this ?

kind regards

Re:[Samba] ARGH!!! Samba and Re-installing Windows 2000

2002-04-16 Thread Rafael

Dont know if this can solve you problem the description i have found was for
NT4 maybee
it is the same problem with Windows 2000. I hope this could solve your
problem
Greetings Rafael

Support knowledgebase (samba_crypt)

Symptom:

>From version NT4.0 NT works with encrypted passwords. While NT4.0 still
works with plaintext passwords (as fallback) NT4.0 incl. servicepack refuses
to work (you may recognize this behaviour by repeating entering the login
and the password a couple of times. Then you will be able to mount a share).
(more on this topic in /usr/doc/packages/samba/ ENCRYPTION.txt).

Solution:

Well, either you may convince NT via its Windows registry to use plaintext
passwords

There is a script in the samba source package called mksmbpasswd.sh. This is
for creating a "special" password file out of the existing one.

mksmbpasswd.sh:

#!/bin/sh
awk 'BEGIN {FS=":"
printf("#\n# SMB password file.\n#\n")
}
{ printf(
"%s:%s:::%s:
%s:%s\n", $1, $3, $5, $6, $7) }
'

Example:

cat /etc/passwd | mksmbpasswd.sh > /etc/smbpasswd, or
ypcat passwd | mksmbpasswd.sh > /etc/smbpasswd on a NIS server, or client,
respectively.

Thereafter you have to set the permissions of this file: chmod 600
/etc/smbpasswd.
Furthermore be aware that /etc/smbpasswd has been set by default by S.u.S.E.
Well, after a /etc/smbpasswd has been generated a password a user has to be
created. This is done by smbpasswd. If any user may do this the SETUID bit
has to be set (chmod u+s /usr/bin/smbpasswd). Otherwise only root will be
able to change passwords.
Now you have to extend /etc/smb.conf (in global section):

encrypt passwords = yes

If there is more than one samba machine attached it is not necessary to do
so on every machine. Samba is able to get the passwords from another machine
be it an NT server or some other host. To activate this switch you will have
to enter the following lines in the global section:

security = server
password server = YOURSERVER

Make sure that 'YOURSERVER' is the NetBIOS name of the server (NetBIOS and
DNS may differ). NetBIOS names are restricted to a maximum of 15 letters. Of
course you may not enter the options given above on the server itself. This
would create an endless loop.

Important:
Please use an actual samba version (at least ersion 1.9.18p2)!

Re: [Samba] Error Message while Login

2002-04-16 Thread Rafael

Maybee this can help you trie this:
support knowledgebase (ray_win98_smb)

Symptom:

Samba doesn't work with Windows98

Cause:

Windows98 uses only encoded passwords.

Solution:

Use regedit to enter the following new values into the registry :

Enter a new DWORD "EnablePlainTextPassword" at
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VNETSUP] and set
this value to 1
