Maybe try changing

Password Server to equal the netbios name instead of the ip address?

Help!

I have configured a Suse 8.1 machine with the Samba 2.2.7a rpm downloaded
from www.samba.org

This has been configured to become a member server in a NT 4 domain. I have
followed the instructions in the samba how-to (as I have many times before)
to join the domain.

As far as the NT server is concerned suse-tech is a valid server, can be
seen from server manager etc. However

suse-tech:/var/log/samba # wbinfo -t
Could not check secret

suse-tech:/var/log/samba # tail /var/log/samba/log.winbindd

RE: [Samba] newbie on winbind.. help required.

2003-01-21 Thread LaSusa, Dan
I can't answer your questions directly, but how bout thisI tell you how
I'm using winbind and see if that helps!?

(bear in mind, I think my setup is simple and you CAN do a whole lot more
with samba/winbind - but this is what I have setup)

Basically,

I've got an NT4 Domain, a linux server and lots of WinNT/win2k clients.

I want to share a directory on the linux server, but I also want some people
to only have "read-only" rights and others to have "read-write"

I also don't want to have to create userids and passwords on the linux
server for each person/group that will need to use the share. So I need the
linux server, or at least samba to know about the domain users and grant
them right appropriately. Winbind communicates with the PDC in the Domain
and becomes "aware" of the users in the domain.

By having this capability, I don't have to setup new users/passwords, nor do
I have to have the users logon to the share (so long as they log into the
domain, Linux will know who they are).

So ultimately, you don't NEED winbind to do ANY sharing, but it sure makes
administration easier, and simplifies things for users since they don't need
yet ANOTHER userid/password combo.

I hope that makes senseI also I hope I didn't bore you with things you
already know

Samba On!

Subject: [Samba] newbie on winbind.. help required.

I would like to know what exactly does winbind do.?
(i have read the documentation but i am yet confused)

prior to having winbind incorporated in samba, there was smb, nmb doing the
authentication using samba server on linux.
so samba acted as file and print server + authentcation server for windows
clients including the NT server.

NT Server -> Linux Server (Samba)

mswinclient1 mswinclient2 mswinclient3 etc.

so if we look at the above rough picture
my all 3 mswinclients can do sharing to NT server as well as Linux having
samba. the ntserver can also do sharing to Linux having samba.

but what if have 1 NT server, 5 or even more (probably many) linux
workstations and also lots of MsWindows workstations

how do i do sharing between linux workstations and the MS windows clients
and the NT server.

does this mean that I have to install samba server on each and every linux
workstation.

also then what is the job of winbind.?
as far as the material i have read ... i can figure out that
a solution has come up by the samba team where the password authetication
that was done twice, for windows server as well as linux server has been
eliminated, thus making the samba server do no authentication any more,
while the NT server does the full fledged authentication.

is there anything more?

regards

I'm
kinda new to this, so you may have already tried all of this and then
somebut I'm just trying to help...

1.  Winbind IS running right?  (I'm assuming so, but just
checking)
2.  What do you get if you run "wbinfo -t" ?

So I
solved my orginal problem, but now here's where I'm at:

No
errors when smb or winbind start (based on log files)

If I
do a wbinfo -t

I get
that the secret is good.

If I
do a wbinfo -u

0xc233

Is all
I get??!?

Same
for when I do a wbinfo -g

What
does this mean?  No Domain Controller?  If that's the case I've tried
changing the password server line in my smb.conf file.  I've tried it by
name, IP address and *

Any
ideas out there?

Thanks
in advanced!

[Samba] I messed up winbind....but what is wrong?

2002-12-19 Thread LaSusa, Dan
Title: Message

I
had posted about winbind picking the wrong domain to this list about a week ago
and this was the problem I was still trying to solve when I must have messed
something else up.

SO!  Winbind WAS working (even though it was picking the wrong
domain)

I
re-ran smbpasswd -j LMC -r -U

I
get prompted for the password, enter it and I am told that I joined the LMC
domain.

(smbd and nmbd ARE running)

Then when I do

RE: [Samba] samba does not work

2002-12-17 Thread LaSusa, Dan
I'm still new to all of this too, but I will try to help if I canjust
need more info first

What is your security option set to (in smb.conf)?

When you say windows cannot see itdo you mean it can't see it in Network
neighborhood? What about if you do a "net view"?

What version of Windows?

RE: [Samba] winbind help for newbie

2002-12-16 Thread LaSusa, Dan
I just tried it...

It didn't error or anythingit just came back to a prompt...

At which point I ran

Wbinfo -m

And still got LMCMIG

For what it's worthThis is an NT4 domain. I noticed in the link you
sent, it seemed to talk about a win2k domain

Thanks for trying :-) (man this is frustrating)

[Samba] Winbind and wrong domain

2002-12-16 Thread LaSusa, Dan
Title: Message

Sorry to be a pestbut I worked on trying to figure this out
all weekendand I'm still at a loss

Here is all the info collected to date (these are all copy/paste from
emails I sent to the list late last week)

I've been looking thru manpages and online for
help.
I *think* I've got winbind mostly setup (somehow) but it seems
to be using the wrong Domain.
Some info:
I am running RH7.3
Kernel 2.4.18-3
Samba 2.2.7

In my smb.conf file I have:
[global]
 security =
Domain

workgroup = LMC
 winbind separator
= +
 winbind uid =
1-2
 winbind gid =
1-2
 winbind enum users
= yes
 winbind enum goups
= yes
 winbind cache time
= 10

In my nsswitch.conf file I have:
passwd: files winbind
shadow: files winbind
group: files winbind

When I do a wbinfo -u or -g I get the info for our LMCMIG
domain.

Why is it using the LMCMIG domain instead of what I have in
the smb.conf file? How do I tell it to use
LMC??

---End of 1st email to
list---
To which Errol responded:
You might want to try the password server parameter. How did you join the
domain? Did you specifiy the IP address of the password
server?
--End of Errol's
reply--
--My Reply---
I joined the domain (LMC) with the following command
Smbpasswd -j LMC -r LMC_EXC1 (this is our PDC) -U
administrator
I then got prompted for the password, I entered it
And got the message "Joined the LMC Domain"
Then I stopped and restarted the smb service
Did a wbinfo -u and then -g and still got info for the LMCMIG
domain.
I then went into the smb.conf file, changed
Password server = *
To
Password server = LMC_EXC1
Restarted smb
Still got the info for LMCMIG
Went back into smb.conf
Changed
Password server = LMC_EXC1
To
Password server = (IP address of server)
Restarted smb
Still no luck.
---end of my reply-
---My follow up email with additional
trying-
Following up with more info...
When I run:
./winbindd -i -d 1
winbindd version 2.2.7 started.
Copyright The Samba Team 2000-2001
Added domain LMC (S-1-5-21-1530202311-1617714320-7473742)
getting trusted domain list
Added domain LMCMIG (S-1-5-21-1039822437-107361799-1990678075)
So it looks like it's adding the LMC Domain (which is what I want) but then
adds LMCMIG too (which if fine, but I don't really need) it almost seems to
replace LMC with LMCMIG.
When I then run
wbinfo -m
all I get is
LMCMIG!
I don't get it?!?
End of my follow
up---
So if
anyone out there can helpit would be VERY much appreciatedI just have NO
IDEA what could be wrong at this point
Thanks!
Dan

Does SMB or Winbind have the info cached somewhere? Is there a way to flush
that cache???

Thanks for your help!

You might want to try the password server parameter. How did you join the
domain? Did you specifiy the IP address of the password server?

RE: [Samba] Samba on XFS filesystem

2002-12-13 Thread LaSusa, Dan
Have you checked

/proc/sys/fs/file-max?

See what that value iswe had the same error (non-samba) and this value
was set to 8192.

Try raising the value in this file??
