Any version of OpenLDAP should work, in fact any LDAP server should work(SunONE, Tivoli, Fedora), OpenLDAP is required for smbk5pwd however. If you want to do replication you should probably use OpenLDAP 2.4.17, it has a lot of fixes in this area, its not that hard to compile from scratch.
