[spectre] Re-rooting Digital Culture - Media Art Ecologies.
Sorry for any cross posting... Re-rooting Digital Culture - Media Art Ecologies. The ideas for this interdisciplinary panel will explore the relationship between digital culture and climate change, developing themes adopted in grass-roots, emerging and established practices in art, design, activism and science. http://isea2011.sabanciuniv.edu/panel/re-rooting-digital-culture-media-art-ecologies Sunday, 18 September, 2011 - 09:00 - 10:30 Chair Person: Ruth Catlow Presenters: Helen Varley Jamieson Michel Bauwens Paula Crutchlow Location: Sabanci Center Room 6 Sabanci Center, Levent Over the last decade the awareness of anthropogenic climate change has emerged in parallel with hyper-connective digital networks. In the context of environmental and economic collapse people around the world are seeking alternative visions of prosperity and sustainable ways of living. While the legacy of the carbon fueled Industrial Revolution plays itself out, we find ourselves grappling with questions about the future implications of fast-evolving global digital infrastructure. By their very nature the new tools, networks and behaviours of productivity, exchange and cooperation between humans and machines grow and develop at an accelerated rate. The rhetoric, aesthetics, technics and associated ethical questions of digital culture are fundamentally changing social relations as well as the nature of our material existence. The ideas for this interdisciplinary panel have grown out of Furtherfield's Media Art Ecologies programme and will explore the relationship between digital culture and climate change, developing themes adopted in grass-roots, emerging and established practices in art, design, activism and science. Panelists are artists and activists whose practices address the interrelation of technological and natural processes: beings and things, individuals and multitudes, matter and patterns. They take an ecological approach that challenges growth economics and techno-consumerism and attends to the nature of co-evolving, interdependent entities and conditions; they they activate networks (digital, social, physical) to work with ecological themes and Free and Open processes. [spectre] Spiral Drawing Sunrise @ ISEA2011 ISTANBUL
Spiral Drawing Sunrise A stunning and unperceived image of the Istanbul sunrise will be drawn by two Dutch artists Esther Polak and Ivar van Bekkum at the Cumhuriyet Art Gallery/ Maksem in Taksim Square on the early morning of 16 September. The “Spiral Drawing Sunrise” is a contemporary example of land-art, but now reacting to city environments. During the live performance a delicate robot like solar-machine graphs the rising sun, using sand as its ink. The sand drawing will be made directly on the pavement, and will be an unexpected experience for any by-passser. The process will take a couple of hours depending on available sun light. The drawing will fade away in 1-3 days or minutes when the street cleaners feel they have to sweep it away. A lasting art-work, in the form of a unique photo print, will be available via the website of the project soon after. You are cordially invited to visit the performance that will start at sunrise, and continues till noon. Location: Taksim Square near the entrance to İstiklal Caddesi and in front of The Cumhuriyet Art Gallery More information: http://spiraldrawingsunrise.wordpress.com/ http://polakvanbekkum.nl/ ISEA2011 ISTANBUL - The 17th International Symposium on Electronic Art The performance is supported by Mondriaan Foundation --- Kind regards, Ivar van Bekkum and Esther Polak__ SPECTRE list for media culture in Deep Europe Info, archive and help: http://post.in-mind.de/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/spectre
[spectre] Media Squares: On the new forms of protest and their media, int. seminar, Friday September 30, Amsterdam
A N N O U N C E M E N T Media Squares On the new forms of protest and their media Social protest has become almost inseparably linked to a plethora of media images and messages distributed via internet, mobile phones, social media, internet video platforms and of course traditional media outlets such as newspapers, radio and television. A popular category to have emerged recently is the 'twitter-revolution'. In almost all cases (Iran, Tunisia, Egypt, London) the role of the platform turned out to be less than essential in retrospect. Protests mostly manifested on the streets and particularly the public squares ('Take the Square'). Deeply rooted blogger-networks did however play a mayor role, preparing the protests that have now been dubbed the Arabian Spring'. And internet played a crucial role in the organisation and co-ordination of the European 'anti-austerity' protests (Spain, Greece, UK, Italy). This international seminar brings together theorists, artists, designers, activists and media specialists to develop a critical analysis of the new forms of social protest and their media dimension. The program is divided into two blocks. The first block focuses on an in-depth analysis of the evolving WikiLeaks-saga, while the second block will examine the remarkable string of protests in the Mediterranean region. These discussions will be interrupted at times by startling artistic interventions in current social and political debates. Participants in the program are: Daniel van der Velden (Metahaven), Geert Lovink (Institute of Network Cultures, INC), Aalam Wassef (Ahmad Sherif), Omar Robert Hamilton (Mosireen / Tahrir Cinema, Cairo) Nat Muller (independent curator), David Garcia (Chelsea College), Jodi Dean (Hobart and William Smith Colleges / Blog Theory), X.net Democracia Real Ya - Barcelona, Gahlia Elsrakbi (Foundland), Nadia Plesner (Darfurnica), Florian Conradi and Michelle Christensen (stateless plug-in), Sami Ben Gharbia (Global Voices - tbc).
