[sqlite] SQLite Documentation v2

2010-12-10 Thread Dagdamor
SQLite Documentation (unofficial, HTML Help version) has been updated.

Changes:

- keywords list (index) extended with many new terms
- one missing link (Locking And Concurrency) added to the TOC
- four missing images (rounded corners) added to the file
- more accurate links to the main sections
- SQLite releases are now listed in the correct, natural order

The download link is the same:

http://www.phpc.ru/files/sqlite/sqlite_docs_3_7_3.chm

If you can't see the contents, unblock the .chm first (right-click on the
file in Explorer, then click Unblock) - thanks to Luuk34 for the tip.

Also thanks to Artur Reilin for nice feedback and advises about the docs.

Enjoy!

There is just one small thing I found so far, that isn't right. The top
navigation with About, Download and such. If you hover the text links
with your mouse, the colour of the text links and the background are the
same then. So you can't read them.

Perhaps this is true, I'm still using win98, it's less restrictive :)

The documents in the .chm are exact copies of the official documentation
files - I haven't touched them, didn't even add missing /body and

I am quite new user with Database and SQLite and find very hard to get
information and documentation.
My opinion is that it is totaly NOT intuitive on the web to find
information.
For comparison I am quite new on Autohotkey software (autohokey.com) and
I have no problem to find information and answer on problem (most of
the time I find the answer without posting a question).

- Did I miss something on SQLite web ? or does other users think like
- me
that some improvment should be done ?

Bonjour, Maxime,

I'm *not* an sqlite developer, but maybe I can provide a portion of an
answer.

-- CHM --

There's no .chm file for a couple of reasons. Mainly, .chm is a
Microsoft application help format for Windows, and Windows is just one
of the many operating systems on which sqlite is run. Secondly, sqlite
is not really an application (not like, say, Microsoft Access) -- it is
instead an embeddable SQL engine intended for programmers. That being
said, there *is* also provided a command line tool called sqlite3
intended mainly for testing, but which is useful in it's own right. If
you run it, it will let you know that a consise help screen is available
using the .help command.

The full source code (very well commented) is available for both the
sqlite engine and the command line utility.

There is not to say that other folks have not written end-user
applications using Sqlite, of course, and there are a number of
applications that are GUI database administration tools that may or may
not have good online help included -- you'd want to approach those
developers in that regard.

-- Your current problem --

I take it you likely have something in particular you would like to know
about sqlite? Since you haven't found it on the website, you may want
to post your particular problem here.

-- Documentation in general --

On the one hand, each person would organize a website differently, and
all will never be pleased. But on the other hand, sometimes someone
unacquainted with the product can provide some of the most useful
feedback, so you may want to post some specific suggestions you may
have.

I find that it's very helpful to visit the wiki -- and of course you may
submit wiki improvements quite directly.

Hope this may help in some way,
   Donald

[sqlite] SQLite Documentation (take # 2)

2007-07-13 Thread Veikko Mäkinen

Hi everyone,

I wrote about improving the documentation of SQLite some time ago but
really didn't get anyone interested. But I'm persistent :) I want to
keep putting together all the bits and pieces in sqlite.org, wiki and
this mailing list (I subscribed to this list a couple of weeks ago and
I've already learnt heaps of stuff that isn't in the docs or is
described inadequately :)

However, to procede with this, I need permission to use the content from
sqlite.org. But who can give me such a permission? D. Richard Hipp? My
intention is to create an open-source book (hopefully as a community
effort) that would serve as a basic manual for anyone using SQLite.

Yours Sincerely,
Veikko Mäkinen

Forgot to remind that the docbook xml source is available via SVN in
http://svn.projectbin.org/sqlitemanual/trunk/ and a compiled version
(might not always be up-to-date) in http://projectbin.org/sqlitemanual/.

Hi, Veikko,

I think I recall Dr. H writing that he'd set up the wiki in the hope
that this would allow the user community to contribute toward excellent
documentation.

Would it perhaps be a good idea for you to take your new material and
improvements to the old, and incorporate them into the wiki? It sounds
like you have a lot of good stuff to offer.

Hi Donald,

Wiki is great if you want to contribute some quick notes or do some
drafting but as a comprehensive manual it has lots of weaknesses like
lack of structure (you can fake it but eventually it's just a collection
of pages with very little or no cohesion), versioning only per page,
inability to convert content to different formats (single page html or
pdf for off-line and printing for example) and no defined syntax.

So in my opinion it would be a better idea to take everything from the
wiki, restructure it and put it into a book.

Thanks Clark. I had, and it did. Me happy.

I am wondering though, how would I have known this if Clark hadn't
shown me how? I did ./configure --help, and that didn't seem to point
me anywhere. I poked around on sqlite.org, and didn't find anything
there as well. Maybe I missed something obvious...

In README there is a reference to publish.sh, where you can see how to
generate the HTML documentation. On the other hand, ``make doc'' is mostly
an educated guess, when it comes to documentation generation :-)

[sqlite] SQLite documentation

2007-01-29 Thread P Kishor

Isn't there a way to generate html documentation for SQLite from the
source files? I have a www folder with a bunch of Tcl files (which
seem like I need to run them through Tcl to get html out), but no
html. I am missing something obvious, so please point me in the right
direction.

Re: [sqlite] SQLITE Documentation

2005-09-18 Thread Eugene Wee

Hi,

I decided to try and get the documentation on my computer myself, so did a 'make
doc' after extracting sqlite-3.2.6.tar.gz

The result was the message:
make: Nothing to be done for `doc'.

The doc subdirectory doesnt have a makefile, and trying make doc in the src
subdirectory returns:
make: *** No rule to make target `doc'. Stop.

How then should I obtain the documentation, aside from that provided online, and
by manually sifting through the source? I'm on MS Windows XP, using MinGW +
MSYS. make doc was run through MSYS.

Thanks,
Eugene Wee

Dunno, I never found it. Might be the SQLite official team have it.
Currently I downloaded by myself all documentation, faqs and syntax
pages from sqlite.org, then fix the links and now it available
online on my box.

Best regards.

Chris.

Follow the instructions in README but instead of running make and
make install, just run make doc.
Of course you'll need to run it from MSYS.
Important thing here is to run configure script before the make
doc, but README will instruct you to do it like that anyway.
