Of course showing enthusiasm about THAT particular section of rail, showing them a picture of your layout and live steam locomotives, and offering to show it to them sometime, might not hurt either. this is similar advice to harry wade's when dealing with metal brokers. in the eight-nine months since there's actually been track on the layout in the backyard, a number of tradespeople have heard one way or another about it and have received variously long descriptions and/or demonstrations. the estimator for the house-painting company was quite charmed, apparently, on a couple of levels. so was his crew. we got a low price and a job that -- to my eye at least -- is superior to that received by others in the neighborhood who've used this company. i would suspect that the vast majority of men are fascinated with what we do -- and the rest are liars. \dmc -- ^^^ Dave Cole Gen'l Sup't: Grand Teton Everglades Steam Excursion Co. Steve, Sounds like you have been walking the branch line. I saw a 4 unit train with 34 cars going up to the cement plant a few weeks ago, mostly all coal cars. Look forward to seeing you. Hi Gary, Did Tom pass on my message about trying Indian Motorcycles for a real job. I heard a distant friend of mine started there 2-3 weeks ago. Also they were advertising in the San Jose Mercury news on Sunday. I am also working 2 days a week part time and still looking for a 40+hr week job. Yup. Walking the branch line has been a favorite Sunday morning activity while the family is still squabbling over who gets the Sunday funnies and the local burghers aren't yet out and about. One day there was a pile of old rail that had probably been dug out by the crews who were refurbishing Congress Springs Park in Saratoga. The railheads were all peened over and in layers so they were well used. Cast into the rails were abbreviations for Lackawana Iron and Steel and Carnegie Steel, and the accompanying dates were from the 1890's or so. My guess is that they were part of either the old trolley line to Congress Springs or the SP branch to Palo Alto. I keep hoping to find some artifact that's more portable but so far no luck. Back at the end of March I also watched a 4 unit train roll through Campbell with 30 open hopper cars, 24 of which had a visible coal load. There was also another 14 covered cement hopper cars. With all the cement making activity that these coal loads imply it won't be long before they dig a big enough hole in the hills that I'll be able to watch an ocean sunset from my place in San Jose. Steve, After my inquiring about a piece of rail at the local railroad maintenance office, one of their men torched off a 4-foot long section and gave it to me. They acted like it was no big deal, but the crew in your locale might not be as friendly, or under other restrictions.
