Wow ! I didn't expect so many responses!

I guess I need to explain it betterdon't know
the buzzwords.
On the left of my Mail window is a pane titled
Names.
In that pane are my e-mail accounts and Local
Folders and News.Outlook.Express.
Under (within) News.Outlook.Express is
m.s.seamonkey - this group to whom I am
messaging.

A LONG time ago, I used to be able to get a huge
list of various newsgroups (?) with all sorts of
subjects in them to choose from - except I forgot
HOW to get to them.
This News.Outlook.Express has Mozilla and
Netscape as subgroups (right term?) - that is
all I can pull up with the subscribe function.

To be honest - I don't even remember how I got to
this Newsgroup ! It was set up ages ago and still
survives - as I do at 71.

I am trying to get to a group like this that can
explain why Windows XP keeps asking for a program
password w/o the program being activated.
It is like Win XP remembers an unrelated action
and repeats it ad nausium.

DoctorBill

Better explanation.
I have a lot of stuff stored as Screenshots (jpg
files) of Bank and Stock Market data.
I have a program to view and manipulate these
files (Graphics Workshop Pro - [GWP]).
I have Hide Files and Folders (HFF) which
conceals whatever folders you set it up to conceal.
I have set HFF to hide the folders that the GWP
can read - so only I can access them with a
password.
I invoke HFF and it asks for a password. i
provide the password.
HFF opens and I click on Unhide - now I can
open GWP and access my secret files.
When I am done, I invoke HFF, enter the password
and click HIDE. Then exit HFF.
Back to no one can see them - hidden (how I
don't know!)
Better ?
I know this is not for this Newsgroup - I'm only
asking HOW to find a Win XP newsgroup !

DoctorBill

As mentioned by several people, first add a

to that server add the group:
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

As mentioned by several people, first add a

Who is your internet provider? They may provide newsgroups. Check
with them and see. Most of them do not provide binary newsgroups (the
ones that contain pictures, music, etc.) but some still provide
regular text newsgroups. If your provider DOES have newsgroups their
site should have instructions on how to set up to use them.

If your provider does not have newsgroups, then you need to subscribe
to a website that does. I use giganews.com It costs 4.99 per month
to subscribe and they have given good service. Some are free. Do a
search for newsgroups (without the quotation marks). Once you get
signed up to one, they should provide instructions on how to use them,
or some of us may be able to help.

Importing Windows Live Mail into SM?

2014-02-19 Thread Ian Jackson
I'm new to SeaMonkey (although I've had Thunderbird running for a couple
of years now as a possible alternative to my long-time mail/news client,
Demon's now-unsupported 'Turnpike').

I have a friend who's not much made up with his Windows 7 Windows Live
Mail (and I can't say I blame him). I've been recommending that he try
TB as an alternative. However, I've just started trying SM, and as it
seems a bit simpler than TB, I thought I'd suggest that instead.

Unfortunately, SM's 'Tools', 'Import' can't import WLM .eml e-mails
directly. Unlike Thunderbird, the ImportExportTools extension (both
versions 2.7.2.2 and 2.8.0.4) is incompatible with SM V2.24 (well,
that's what I get when I try to install the .xpi file from file). While
the .eml files could probably be converted into something that SM would
accept, things are starting to get a bit complicated.

So my question is whether anyone has any recommendations for a simple
WLM-to-SM transfer?

From help, I found. (But first you will need to pick a newssaver.)

Open the Edit menu and choose Mail Newsgroups Account Settings. You
see the Mail Newsgroups Account Settings dialog box. You can perform
these tasks:

Add Account: Click this button to set up a new mail, news or blogs
news feeds account. Be sure to type the account information exactly as
it is given to you. Move through the screens with the arrows, or click
Cancel to stop account creation.

Doctor Bill,

You can sign up for free newsserver access here:

http://www.eternal-september.org/

I don't think it will be too difficult if you follow their instructions.
However, be aware that you cannot register if you are using an att.net
email.

It has at least two XP newsgroups including the following:

microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
alt.comp.os.windows-xp

Those of us in our eighties have no problem registering with and using
Eternal-September so you young pups in your seventies should be able to
handle it :-)

SeaMonkey regards this message as an e-mail scam

This red alert is showing up on almost all of my newsletters: SeaMonkey regards

Can I teach it by hitting ignore? If not can I turn it off? It's rather useless when it has this many false positives. I also

This red alert is showing up on almost all of my newsletters: SeaMonkey

Can I teach it by hitting ignore? If not can I turn it off? It's rather
useless when it has this many false positives. I also have to keep
ignoring alerts when I click on any link that has been sent
through/shortened by a newsletter service.

it's not trainable. You can turn it off in the Preferences under Junk
Suspect Mail in the Mail Newsgroups section.

Could be wrong but I've got that junk setting turned off and I still get
the occasional scam warning. Different from junk which I never get.

that junk setting

The question and answer were about scam/suspect messages.

Thanks! Did this get added recently? I've been using SeaMonkey for years, and
don't remember it doing this before.

How do I find other Newsgroups HERE ?

I used to be able to bring up a Big List of
available News Groups to subscribe to, but I
forgot how to do that a long ago.

Specifically looking for something to replace
Windows XP Annoyances which is now defunct.

I have to find out why an Enter Password
window keeps relentlessly popping up.

Who is your internet provider? They may provide
newsgroups. Check with them and see. Most of
them do not provide binary newsgroups (the ones
that contain pictures, music, etc.) but some
still provide regular text newsgroups. If your
provider DOES have newsgroups their site should
have instructions on how to set up to use them.

If your provider does not have newsgroups, then
you need to subscribe to a website that does. I
use giganews.com It costs 4.99 per month to
subscribe and they have given good service. Some
are free. Do a search for newsgroups (without
the quotation marks). Once you get signed up to
one, they should provide instructions on how to
use them, or some of us may be able to help.

Thanks so much guys ! I will follow thru.

BTW - what IS a Newsgroup that it can function via
the MAIL part of a browser - some special or
different thing that a web site ?

It reacts when links in the message are misleading -- for example, if
the display text is http://www.areallycoolsite.com but the link
actually points to http://www.phishingcentral.com. You'll get that
when the newsletter uses a service like Constant Contact, where all the
links go through the service so they can track who clicked them. Mouse
over the links and you'll see what I mean in the status bar at bottom left.
