Values you pass to the view get escaped, if you enabled it at project generation (1.2) / by default (1.{3,4}), which is a Good Thing™. On the long term I'd advise against disabling it globally, and getting the raw data only in special cases when that's what you need - the output escaping can save you from a lot of trouble by preventing attacks like html injection.
