Re: [OSM-talk] mapbox, (Changeset Analyzer), whodidit

2019-09-24 Thread john whelan
I think the problem has been resolved. There was a misunderstanding on
which tags should be used for which values.

Strangely enough bus stops and bus routes are quite specialised and it
isn't always apparent how they should be tagged especially with the newer
platform tags.

Quality assurance (QA). It helps more experienced mappers to see where
new people add things.
If they spot mistakes, they should engage in a friendly conversation
via private messages or changeset comments.
Being friendly is not always easy, so sometimes messages can be too rude.
And there are people that simply do not engage in conversations, which
is often understandable, as there are so many people that make a few
edits and disappear forever.
Other people are overly protective of "their" area, and change
everything to the way they want, which is not really desirable.

In general, those tools are used to follow edits in an area, not for
following individuals.

As Warin pointed out, try to start a conversation with the other
mapper, or the local community to find out why he is changing
everything you edit.
If all else fail, you can contact the DWG, they can e.g. block the
other mapper until he reads a certain message.

Good luck (and hope you are not too disappointed in OSM due to the
behaviour of 1 individual).

m

There are lots of tools to find things in OSM.
I use some of them to find my own errors!
They might be used to find out who changed something.
What each is intended for may not be all it can be used for.

I find somebody is following my every changeset I add, and delete's or
re edits it his way,

to match the other edits he has done of the same type.

Have you placed comments on the changeset that deleted your entry?
Have you placed comments on the changeset that altered your entry?

These are publicly viewable. If they fail to respond there are further steps
that can be taken.

Impossible for me form an opinion as to which of you could be more correct that
the other, sometimes it is a matter of view point.

I too follow some mappers..

For example one mapper saw anything going under a bridge as also being in a
tunnel and started to add tags for tunnels to all objects going under any
bridge.
They also did other things that were not, in my view, right. And yes I placed
changeset comments on there entries. Never had a response from them.
Other people have also placed comments on there entries too.. still no response.

So I keep a watchful eye on these mappers from time to time.

better than nothing. At best, it looks like this:

This imagery covers a large area, but in some places, the highest resolution
seemingly refuses to load (like Mapbox haven't imported all zoom levels). It
certainly looks like it's the same photography session:

In other places, where there was imagery before this big update, the old poor
imagery replaces the better imagery on higher zoom levels. For example here,
where the zoomed out imagery looks like it should be of higher resolution than
what replaces it when zoomed in (poor black and white imagery): zoomed out:
http://grillo.users.openstreetmap.se/highres%20zoomed%20out%20mapbox.png , same
area zoomed in:
http://grillo.users.openstreetmap.se/lowres%20zoomed%20in%20mapbox.png
I have already tried contacting Mapbox about this (about a month ago) but got
no reply.
I would be very grateful if anyone could shed some light on this situation!

PS: In contacting Mapbox. I had to create a Mapbox account. Does anyone know
what's going on? Are they going to upload the higher resolution tiles that they
probably have? Does anyone have a way to contact Mapbox about this that will
actually go to someone who works with this? The contact options for OSM mappers
who use Mapbox imagery seem to be very limited. I had to create an account and
lie about my occupation (because they forced me to choose between very few
different job titles when creating the account). Also, the contact form didn't
seem to take OSM questions into account at all.

The best way to deal with things like this might be to approach the
Mapbox data team:

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mapbox#Mapbox_Data_Team

who are routinely using the images for mapping themselves and who
therefore might be familiar with technical quirks w.r.t. use in JOSM
and also know who to approach within Mapbox to handle more substantial
problems.

You can also see the issue outside JOSM by the way:

[OSM-talk] Mapbox Data Team Guidelines

2014-09-19 Thread Alex Barth
Two new full time OpenStreetMap mappers have joined the Mapbox team this
week. This is exciting for me as it allows us to do more direct work on OSM
and contribute back directly. With this recent addition we also want to
introduce guidelines establishing some simple but important rules of how we
want to map as a team within the OpenStreetMap community. I've summarized
them on this diary entry. Looking forward to feedback:

http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/lxbarth/diary/23801

There's been some prior discussion on organizational mapping policies and I
want to thank people on the thread over here for inspiration:

Hey Frans -

All work we're doing with Knight funding will directly go into the OSM
ecosystem, ideally on openstreetmap.org. Right now we joined forces with the iD
editor project [1] and focus most of our resources there. At the same time,
we've been working on low-level improvements to the OSM.org UI [2] and a
