Hi all,
I'm wondering if anyone is interested in helping out with compiling
this national trails inventory (collection of gps tracks).
I already have the 'method to the maddness' and know it will work, but
it would make this task more fun when more are involved.
My aim is to have it all compiled and organized for march 1st, 2011.
I'll do a skype/tinychat meetup for everyone who wants to be part of this.
cheers,
sam

[Talk-ca] Qubec wiki page

2010-11-26 Thread Pierre Beland

I just revamped the Québec wiki page and called it Portail OpenStreetMap pour
le Québec.

I wanted to have a more attractive page and structure the information so that
It's easier to follow.
See http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Canada:Québec

There was a lot of stuff related to the road network. And the Route Verte
bicycle network was not specified on that page. Also, I started to create a
Page for Sentier de l'Estrie, a 200km hiking trail in Eastern Townships. And
created relations for the various sections of the trail.

I used more attractive presentation, displaced road network stuff in a new page
and created three pages related to routes (ie. road, bicycle and hiking). I
plan to add to the contents of these pages, the rules to create Relation
routes. As you can see in the Sentiers de randonnée pédestre page, I listed the
relations related to Sentier de l'Estrie hiking trail network, wich facilitates
the follow-up.
LISTES DE SUIVI
Réseau routier du Québec
Itinéraires, Pistes cyclables
Sentiers de randonnée pédestre

Sentier de L'Estrie
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Canada:Qu%C3%A9bec/Sentier_de_l%27Estrie

In this page, you will find hyperlinks to HikeBikeMap and Lonvia maps. I have
made rendering test using osmc:symbol tag developped by Lonvia and used in
Europe.

This is a work in progress. The sections are not all documented yet and I will
also add the secondary trails connecting to this main trail.

I started from GPS traces already in OSM and discussed with Sentier de L'Estrie
club to present the complete network. We will meet in january on that matter.
I am member of that club wich should faciliate it. You can Look at the maps
below to see how the Route relations render on maps. If you make your own
rendering tests, you should note that these maps are updated daily. The info on
your relation will be copied at 00:00 (Switzerland time). You will see the
result the next morning. It remembers me the time when I had two shots a day
using keypunched cards.

[Talk-ht] Propositions for more efficient Nominatims searches and consistent classification of cities, towns, villages and hamlets of Haiti for better rendering on maps

2010-11-17 Thread Pierre Beland
I have passed a long time searching, correcting town names, try to validate if
Health units where located at the right place. This made me realize how many
city names where still missing or inconsitently classified for Nominatim
searches or Map rendering.

Except for the boundary relations for each levels of the Administrative
structure of Haiti, I have not seen propositions about how to classify the
different villages, towns and cities of Haiti. And looking at the map of Haïti,
I have have seen a lot of inconsistencies. The towns corresponding to
Administrative levels Department, Arrondissement and Commune where not seen
properly on the map or could not be searched properly in Nominatim. And some
hamlets, peaks or simply names in haiti-tlm-50 corresponding to no housing
where classified like important cities.

An other example is Search for Gros Morne. Search was indicating Gros Morne
peak but not Arrondissement Gros Morrne.

I started to correct things in Nord-Ouest and Artibonite Departments and
modified the various tags to see the effect on Map rendering. The Wiki page
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haiti presents the Administrative levels of Haiti
and estimated population of 2008.

From that, I propose the following guidelines :

Boundary Relations

To facilite Nominatim searches, I propose to modify the Boundary Relations by
adding in the name tag a suffix that represents the administrative level (ie.
Département, Arrondissement, Commune). If you make a Nominatim search, you will
see the effect of this. Try (Arrondissement, Haiti) or (Gros Morne). You will
also see thats it facilitate the search for people trying to see administrative
level boundaries.

Artibonite Department boundary relation would show :
tag k='admin_level' v='4'/
tag k='boundary' v='administrative'/
tag k='name' v='Département Artibonite'/
tag k='pcode:1' v='5'/
tag k='type' v='boundary'/

Dessalines Arrondissement boundary relation would show :
tag k='admin_level' v='5'/
tag k='boundary' v='administrative'/
tag k='name' v='Arrondissement Dessalines'/
tag k='type' v='boundary'/

Gonaïves Commune boundary relation would show :
tag k='admin_level' v='8'/
tag k='boundary' v='administrative'/
tag k='id_commune' v='511'/
tag k='name' v='Gonaïves'/
tag k='pcode:2' v='511'/
tag k='source' v='US Census Bureau, boundary import, 16/01/2010'/
tag k='type' v='boundary'/

tag k='addr:country' v='HT' /
tag k='admin_level' v='8' /
tag k='alt_name:en' v='Gonaïves' /
tag k='is_in:Department' v='Artibonite' /
tag k='is_in:country' v='Haiti' /
tag k='name' v='Gonaives' /
tag k='name:fr' v='Les Gonaïves' /
tag k='name:ht' v='Gonayiv' /
tag k='population' v='263716'/
tag k='pcode:2' v='511' /
tag k='place' v='city' /
tag k='source' v='http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Gona%C3%AFves' /

Town nodes

For towns representing the administrative levels 4. Département, 5.
Arrondissement and 8. Commune, I propose to add systematically the Population
tag indicating population size (The info is provided in
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haiti for each Administrative level).

The Tags place=city (pop 100,000+) and place=town (10,000 - 100,000) should be
reserved to cities corresponding to Département, Arrondissement and Commune.

The Tag place=village should be reserved for Sections communales
(Administrative level=10).
All other places should be classified place=hamlet.

When homonyms exist like Gros Morne, it seems that searches are more efficient
in Nominatim when adding the tags addr:country=HT and is_in='The superior
Administrative Level'. In this case, all the homonyms will be showed while
searching for that name.

Polygons for Residential areas

These polygons when they are to important gives some confusion. I wonder if we
should systematiqually avoid using them for hamlets (towns other than
Département, Arrondissement, Commune or Section communale).

Richard,

This is more general than how I would like to render my individual map. I think
that it refers to the general tagging schema of Openstreetmap for entities such
as island and lakes.

If you look at Liberty island in the port of New-York. You see that, with
Mapnik, the name of the island is well rendered at zoom level 13. The name is
ever bigger than the island.

For the Great Lakes, also, we cannot see the names on the OSM maps.

Thats bring more questions.

Are they any tags that could permit a certain hierarchisation for rendering of
entities like we have for city names?

Is this non representation of entities like Great Lakes or important island is
a choice that have been clearly expressed in the Openstreetmap community?

If not, in wich instance, should we discuss about that?

On the Haiti Earthquake Map page (http://hyperquad.telascience.org/haiti3/), it
is possible to select many layers simultaneously to show adjacent tiles. The
resolution of these tiles is generally very good. I can go up to zoom=18.

Below is the rule to show these maps with JOSM wms tool, where LAYERS = name of
the layers to show, If more than one layer is requested to show simultaneously
adjacent Map Tiles, the Layer Names are separeted by a comma).

The rule is

Hi,
The high resolution satellite imagery that was available after the
earthquake and hosted at Telascience, is available online again. It also
includes imagery that was not available then (as far as I know), notably
many Quickbird images.
It can be browsed on this page:
http://hyperquad.telascience.org/haiti3/
And used as WMS layer(s) from this URL:
http://hyperquad.telascience.org/cgi-bin/haiti3?
(use with the Edit/Preferences/WMS/Add dialog in JOSM)
Thanks to Winkey and all those who made this possible.
Hurricane Tomas is forecast to go over Haiti by the end of the week,
with strong winds and heavy rains:
http://www.tropicalstormrisk.com/tracker/dynamic/201021N.html
Southern regions are exposed to be hit by the hurricane in its full
strength.
This UNOCHA situation report describes hurricane preparations, and the
on-going cholera response:
http://www.reliefweb.int/rw/rwb.nsf/db900sid/MUMA-8AS9T7/$File/full_report.pdf
This might be a good time to extend and complete basic OSM mapping
(roads, villages, rivers, ...), that was mostly focused on the area hit
by the earthquake, and was already useful to the relief effort.
Best wishes,
Jean-Guilhem

Re: [Talk-ht] River system analysis tool for Haiti

2010-10-25 Thread Pierre Beland
Jean-Guilhem

The cholera epidemy and water contamination shows the importance of well
identifying the Drainage Bassins in Haiti. These like a tree leaf, have complex
ramifications not easy to analyze. I am not a GIS specialist and dont know if
specialized tools exist to analyse such ramifications.

Here are some observations following the validation work I did manually last
spring on Haiti Rivers, streams and canals.

The affluents of a river are complex ramifications. See, for example,
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=18.4057lon=-72.0741zoom=14layers=M . In
such a ramification, its long and tedious to check each ramification, to
validate if directions are appropriate.

To this regard, the Report http://osm3.crans.org/haiti/suivi-affluents.php
shows only small part of Drainage bassins.

To analyse and build good cartography of Drainage bassins, we have to consider
all the waterways and all ways and nodes connected to. I have identified
waterways with the following tags : river, stream, canal and drain.

I have often seen ways with the wrong direction (going upward). Yan report on
rivers also shows many small waterway segments not connected to a Drainage
Bassin.

We have to consider the possibility that ways are connected to a River
ramification with wrong tags or are wrongly connected to rivers.

Ideally, we would have to analyse more deeply the river ramifications and
identify different incoherencies, check if all river names are present.

If useful to identify steep slopes, it could also be possible to add elevation
to each node.

To do efficiently the validation work, it would be necessary to extract all the
nodes and ways connected to river ways and relations.

And badly, that, I dont know how to do with Openstreetmap database. If it was
possible to easily export all the information related to rivers in a MySQL
database, I think that we could do a lot of validations from that database.

In Yan List of Rivers
(http://www.tappenbeck.net/osm/data4wiki/haiti/haiti-river_wiki.html ), there
are still many unnamed segments. Many of them might be unconnected to other
rivers. This list have to be manually updated and might have not been updated
recently.

Opencyclemap contour lines could be usefull to identify river directions. But
rivers are not showed on that map. I dont know if there are ways to add
simultaneously contour layers and river layers to Openstreetmap.

Exemples of problems
Canal Desdunes (waterway=canal) not connected page
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=19.2867lon=-72.5855zoom=14layers=M

Many River ramifications not connected
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=18.4397lon=-71.9705zoom=14layers=M

A stream connected to a road
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=18.4579lon=-71.8602zoom=14layers=M

Rivers ending nowhere (or in canals ?) in suburb of Port-au-Prince
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=18.5218lon=-72.125zoom=13layers=M

When looking at zoom level 13,14, you will see well the ramifications and see a
lot of problems with orphan rivers.

Hi,
Jocelyn has setup a page showing the tributaries network for Haiti,
updated from hourly updates if all works well:
http://osm3.crans.org/haiti/suivi-affluents.php
For waterways to appear in it, they have to be represented by relations,
and tagged according to the scheme described in:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:Frodrigo/Relation:Waterway
i.e. with tributaries appearing as members of the destination relation,
with role=tributary, and being themselves relations if they have their
own tributaries.
(I have just learned how to add a relation as member of another relation
in JOSM:
- double click the tributary relation in the relations panel, it should
appear in pink in the main editing area;
- single click the destination relation;
- click on the Modify relation button).
It is also considered to maybe adapt the page
http://osm3.crans.org/haiti/pyramide-cours-eau.php?osm_id=48998245
(originally authored by Sly, and currently using ways only, not relations)
to build the network from topology information and display it in a table.
Many thanks to Jocelyn (and Frodrigo for discussion).

The first river in the list of Named river is Les Trois Rivières (101 km). I
have broken down the ways since then because it creates program interruptions.
I have been told that we should instead use Relations to joins the different
