Probably not the best choices in terms of OSM coverage.

I've done some work in Somerset when visiting my parents, both
in the immediate area and primary/secondary roads around them
including some NPE tracing. The overlaps a bit into Devon and
Dorset as well as they're quite close to the edge of Somerset.

[Talk-GB] Mappers in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset

2008-02-03 Thread John McKerrell
Hi

I have a friend-of-a-friend who's looking to make some paper maps
(yes those still exist) using OSM data. He's basically making tourist
maps and plotting information about places to visit etc. on top. He
only really needs motorways, major roads and secondary roads which is
why we thought OSM data might be up to the job.

The maps are sold on a county-by-county basis and he's going to start
with Cornwall, Devon, and "Dorset and Somerset" (3 maps) and see how
they sell before deciding whether to go further.

I wanted to start off by asking around to find out if anyone is
mapping in those areas. As I'm in Merseyside it's unlikely I'll be
doing any mapping in-situ, if there's no-one else to help I'll
probably end up using NPE maps to finish it off.

This could be a good opportunity for OSM to get some commercial
usage, I believe he's actually looking to get one of the broadsheets
involved so we could be attached to a pretty big name. I don't really
think there's huge amounts of money to be made from this (my hopes of
being paid good money to drive around the country mapping for weeks
on end were dashed!) but there's certainly some potential for OSM to
get some good exposure.

Anyway, thought I'd see if there's anyone around that might be able
to help, please reply if you might be able to help me complete those
counties, or of course if you have any general thoughts on the
subject ;-)

John

[Talk-GB] Freemap down

2008-02-03 Thread Russ
Apologies to the rest of the list, but I can't find any other way to
contact Nick Whitelegg to let him know that free-map.org.uk appears to
be down - I get a

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.free-map.org.uk.

error when trying to view the main page, and my RSS reader can't get the
RSS feed.

Doubt you'll have much of a fight on your hands. ;) My competitiveness to
exit the relatively safe confines of my house usually depends on whether
it's warm weather or not :P

Good to meet you today mate! And likewise, Andy and Alex. I'm gonna have a
tinker with JOSM in a little while, right after I fix my phone (updating it
to WinMo6... Because well, I can. Needs fixing anyway.)

The other PDA didn't run out of battery either! I left it sitting on the
table for an hour after I got back, with the bluetooth still on - had about
23% battery left. Think I'll use it permanently from now on, it's pretty
rock solid. (the 25 minutes using my other phone as a bluetooth modem ran it
down to 20% battery though! Haha)

Thanks also guys for your top tips on JOSM, I feel confident enough to
actually UPload the edits I make now! :)

[Talk-GB] Scouts Mapping in Central Scotland

2008-02-03 Thread Callum Noble
Hi All,

I was speaking to someone involved with the Scout Network in Scotland,
which is an organisation for ex-Scouts aged 18-25.

He suggests a joint mapping weekend/party somewhere in Central Scotland
between the Scouts and some OSM contributers. With some of us to give a
talk on the project and a demo of how to go about mapping/editing. (They
have there own supply of GPS)

A brief discussion suggests that this might be better based at a larger
town which is pretty blank on the map, rather than in Glasgow/Edinburgh
- which for the most part - have their centers mapped quite well now.

Falkirk came up as a possibility but anywhere central could work out. I
understand they have access to accommodation for themselves in quite a
few places - not sure of the exact details of this though.

Any Glasgow/Edinburgh/Central Scotland people interested in this?

I revealed the answer at the SE London party and we had a winner :-)
The answer was that both summits are accessible by paths shown on OSM, but not
shown on either Ordnance Survey or Harvey's maps.
