Where does all the disk space go?

2000-09-30 Thread Ian Gore

I've deleted all my unwanted mails, purged and compressed all the
folders, but my disk space usage still seems way to high! Any ideas,
please?

Or do you have TB store attachments with mail?

Take a look at the tbb files in your message directories with Win
Explorer (or other file managers) and see which folders are
unreasonably large. Go to that folder in TB, turn on the "size"
column in your message list, and sort by size, then you might see
some extra large messages, usually with large attachments.

Or, use the Search tool to find messages larger than, say, 20k
(regular plain text messages rarely exceed 20k). Adjust accordingly
if you have lots of html mail or large newsletters.

Does Folder | Compress All Folders handle work on those folders too?

Yes. No. Try Purge All Folders, because that is misnamed and does a
Purge and Compress. Compress alone doesn't purge, but Pruge purges and
compresses.

Run a trial, and then go to these boxes and choose Folder / Browse
Deleted Messages. If there are deleted messages, then it's not purged.

Yes it does... if that's what was done :-). Actually, I realised
that
it's been a while since I did that. I just did. 56mb saved! That
still
leaves just over 400mb in my mail-base of around 68k messages.

FYI - the bad wrapping above is caused by allowing PGP to reformat the
message when signing. For the best results, turn off wrapping in the
PGP preferences when using PGP with TB.

Hang on - this is one from me! Oops !

I initially thought that TB must be misreporting the amount of space
saved, as it seemed way too large, but I've since checked it against the
free space reported for the drives and sure enough, it's dead on.

The space is being taken up by .msb files, some of which are more than
20 Mbyte each. What are these files? More to the point, what can I do
about them?
