[Texascavers] Fwd: 15th ICS – New sponsor and other news
Forwarded by Mixon: Begin forwarded message: From: ICS 2009 eList secret...@ics2009.us List-Post: texascavers@texascavers.com Date: July 11, 2009 10:42:41 PM CDT To: bmi...@alumni.uchicago.edu Subject: 15th ICS – New sponsor and other news Dear Friends, The 15th International Congress of Speleology (ICS) begins one week from tomorrow, on Sunday, 19 July 2009. Below is an important announcement and some news you may find helpful. The ICS has a new sponsor! Save the Laja is a non-profit organized formed to protect the watershed of the Rio Laja in Mexico. Its interests have broadened to other environmental topics, and it is sponsoring the ICS as a means of supporting the dissemination of information on White Nose Syndrome and other important issues. You can learn more about Save the Laja at http://rio-laja.org/english/Who%20we%20are/about_save_the_laja.htm . Scott McCrea made a quick Google Map of Kerrville, Schreiner University, landmarks and attractions at http://tinyurl.com/ICSmap. Zoom out/in, pan around, change to satellite view, show pictures and videos taken from specific locations. You can access this map on your smartphones or from the Internet to help plan your trip. If you want to help improve the map or add anything, contact Scott at swa...@gmail.com . Scott is also hosting a workshop at the ICS and sends this announcement: “Come see what's in cave packs from around the world. Show the world what's in your cave pack. This Saturday afternoon workshop (1400-1700, MS211) will be ‘What's in your cave pack?’ Bring your pack/kit/bag/ etc. and show other cavers what you carry and why. Get ideas and tips from cavers from around the globe. If you can't bring your pack, take a picture of the pack and its contents, so you can tell us about the things you carry. Come share and learn! Free poster for all participants! While you are looking in your packs, do you have an old piece of equipment for climbing or descending ropes? Gary Storrick is bringing his display of such equipment. It is the largest collection in the world and has many rare and unusual pieces. Gary would be very interesting in adding to the collection, which will be on display at the ICS. If you think you may have something interesting, contact Gary through his website, http://storrick.cnchost.com/VerticalDevicesPage/VerticalHome.shtml , where you can also see and read about this amazing collection of equipment. One last note. When you arrive at the ICS you will be tired but also curious about where everything is located. When you finish registering, to the Theater Room near Registration and sit and rest. A PowerPoint presentation will be playing automatically and continuously. It is a 5-minute orientation to the ICS and where everything important to you is located at Schreiner University. Go rest and watch it for a few minutes. You will be glad you did. And I will be glad to see you soon, George George Veni, Ph.D. Chairman, 15th International Congress of Speleology Adjunct Secretary, International Union of Speleology Executive Director, U.S. National Cave and Karst Research Institute P.S.: By the time you read this message, I will be in Kerrville with other members of the Organizing Committee to prepare the site for you. If you try to reach me or others on the committee between now and the ICS, please remember that we will be traveling, working, and may be slow or unable to respond. [Texascavers] Fwd: 15th ICS - RV Parking and Sponsorship correction
Begin forwarded message: From: ICS 2009 eList secret...@ics2009.us List-Post: texascavers@texascavers.com Date: July 12, 2009 12:22:53 PM CDT To: bmi...@alumni.uchicago.edu Subject: 15th ICS - RV Parking and Sponsorship correction Dear Friends, Some of you are driving to the 15th International Congress of Speleology in RVs. I previously noted that RVs are not allowed on Schreiner University. This caused some problems for a few of you and we have made arrangements with the university to solve or at least reduce the problem. If you drive to Kerrville in an RV and don't have a car, motorcycle, or bicycle with you to get you onto the university, or are not able to coordinate a ride with friends, then you can park in a designated parking lot on campus. The reason I qualify the statement with cars, bikes, etc. is because it is a small parking lot. Depending on the size of the RVs, perhaps as few as four or as many as 10 will fit, so I appreciate your help in keeping space available for those who do not have other options. The parking lot is on the north side of the Delaney dormitory, across the street from the building where you will register for the ICS. The lot will be marked with an RV Parking Only sign. This is not for camping or overnight parking. If you find the parking lot is full (parking, like other ICS activities will be on a first come, first served basis as space is available), you will have to find an off-campus location to park. Maybe while driving on campus you will find a friend who can follow you in car and give you a ride back. We hope this helps. I'm sending this message from the university where many people have come this weekend to prepare the campus and make the ICS the best possible experience for you. ELIST MANAGER'S NOTE: In a previous message, Salvemos al Rio Laja was noted as an ICS sponsor. This is incorrect. The sponsor should have been listed as Save the Laja. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused. [Texascavers] surveyor
I got the survey contest course for ICS layed out this weekend. I brought a Leica, Total-Station professional land surveying instrument with the intention of running a precision survey of the course. But I discovered that there are a couple of technical details involved in getting it set up and calibrated to North that I could use some help with. Are there any lurking caver/surveyors out there who have experience with this? If so, please contact me off list. Thanks! Vivian Loftin 512-659-9486

Re: [Texascavers] WiFi
Well, when you can get 2 bars from MovieStar sitting at the table in the Brinco field house the concept of vacation solitude sorta becomes nebulous--especially if there's a phone junky to hand. --Ediger On Sun, Jul 12, 2009 at 6:22 PM, dirt...@comcast.net wrote: Wi-Fi? [Texascavers] The Photo Cube Project
The photo box will be at ICS. It will be unattended, but will have instructions on how to take the best photos, tripod provided. Anyone can take photos of someone else, and later, if I get enough photos sent to me, I will collect and send them out via a photo program like Picasa. Shoot them photos--help make the cube project a success! -Ernie G - Visit our website: http://texascavers.com To unsubscribe, e-mail: texascavers-unsubscr...@texascavers.com For additional commands, e-mail: texascavers-h...@texascavers.com

While early registration has been closed since last month, the number of registrants has been climbing as we've finalized some registrations that needed extra effort to process. This morning I received the final count for early registration: 1,287. Our initial total registration estimate was 2,000. The global economic crisis is the prime culprit at reducing our estimated attendance to 1,500-1,600. I've heard from many people in the US and abroad who said that normally they would not have had any trouble coming to the ICS, except for the current economic situation. Nonetheless, this still be a huge event with people coming from 52 countries. They should be registering--and paying. No free ride here, boy howdy. I don't think anyone is getting a free ride, they are helping the ICS but are NOT getting any of the benefits of a paid ICS registration (parties, free beer, banquets, etc.). We should be glad they are giving some of their time to help the ICS for free. FYI: I am registered (I paid my $200 back in Dec 2008) ... but I think volunteers should get a free ride. But that's totally my opinion. Re: [Texascavers] ICS
Yeah, well maybe we should, but we're not. Perhaps I could have volunteered through the whole thing and not registered, but not with my head held high. Not when so many others HAVE paid essentially to work for free. -WaV On Sun, Jul 12, 2009 at 8:48 PM, Lyndon Tiu l...@alumni.sfu.ca wrote: They should be registering--and paying. [ot_caving] computer question
All About a week ago I opened up my computer cabinet to blow some of the dirt that makes its way in, I put it back together and now everytime I start it the fan that pulls air out of the cpu starts spinning like crazy making a buzzing noise... checked on BIOS and supposedly the inside temperature of my computer is 91 celsius (thats nine below water boiling point) I dont know much about computers so I asked a friend, he said the temp sensor could be bad, but didnt know where that was located.. anybody have an idea as to where the temp sensor is, or what else could be causing this? thanks for any and all help Nico
Re: [ot_caving] computer question
Nico, all modern processors have the temp sensor inside the cpu, and another in the mobo... I would check to make sure the heatsink is seated properly and that the cpu paste is not dried between the cpu and heatsink. 91 is too hot for most processors, as i'm sure you are aware :) On Sun, Jul 12, 2009 at 4:43 PM, Nico Escamillapitboun...@gmail.com wrote: All About a week ago I opened up my computer cabinet to blow some of the dirt that makes its way in, I put it back together and now everytime I start it the fan that pulls air out of the cpu starts spinning like crazy making a buzzing noise... checked on BIOS and supposedly the inside temperature of my computer is 91 celsius (thats nine below water boiling point) I dont know much about computers so I asked a friend, he said the temp sensor could be bad, but didnt know where that was located.. anybody have an idea as to where the temp sensor is, or what else could be causing this? thanks for any and all help Nico

I would, clean it good with alcohol or something that won't corrode copper or aluminum and a soft rag or a worn out sock :) Will you be attending ICS?Hopefully we'll get to meet up.
