Re: [tips] Is 7% Copying Still Plagiarism?

2016-07-19 Thread Claudia Stanny
The close paraphrasing (to be generous . . . looks more like mosaic
plagiarism) might be forgiven in a student paper if it included a citation
for the original author. Missing in last night's speed.

When students copy words verbatim and do not cite the author, they steal
both the author's language and the author's ideas. Plagiarism also occurs
when we claim ideas as our own, paraphrasing (however loosely, which might
not cross the boundary into mosaic plagiarism) without crediting the source
of those ideas.

The NPR rendition, with Michelle and she who will not be named speaking in
unison, was compelling.

RE: [tips] Is 7% Copying Still Plagiarism?

2016-07-19 Thread Rick Froman
I think it is funny that politicians and those in the political realm can
employ speech writers while claiming everything they say is their own thoughts.
While 7% overlap in a tested document on a plagiarism detector might not
automatically raise a red flag, I definitely wouldn't look kindly on a student
who employed someone to write their papers for them (even with the caveat that
they actually provided the outline of the paper and some specifics for the
writer to toss in and they had final say on the final form of the paper). To be
clear, if I did follow up on the 7% indicator and found those sentences for the
speech discussed on this thread, I would definitely say the student had
plagiarized. You don't have to plagiarize an entire paper for plagiarism to
have occurred. However, I would also consider as a violation of academic
integrity every use, by a student, of a speechwriter or ghostwriter.

It's Hillary's fault. See:

Also, quoting from the WSJ article:

|New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who is slated to speak Tuesday

|cause for concern when "93% of the speech is completely different

In direct answer to the question, a plagiarized paragraph in
a student's paper has always been plagiarism. Also, the words
do not have to be the same if the ideas, especially as sentences,
follow the same order to the same effect.
