Apologies in advance if this feels spammy.

I have been working with a few folks on a grassroots way for people to
donate money to various non-profits & projects such as Apache, Hurd,
EFF, or even to a given developer. This donation might be in response
to some helpful feedback given by that developer in response to a
question; it might be because their name and URL were in some software
they used. Affero takes a bit off the top for our expenses , which we
think is reasonable given the costs involved in credit card auth and the
like. The software used to deliver the service is open source.

Take a look at a the link I created below

People can go to that URL and donate money, 35% of which goes to the
Squid, 35% to XFree86 and 30% to FSF Gen Fund-GCC.

We're very interested in any comments and feedback on the
site/service. You can check it out at http://www.affero.com.
BTW, we have been told that we should lower our $15.00 minimum donation.
What do you think?

Thanks

Reed

RE: Money for Projects

2002-04-17 Thread Jay Gardner

Sorry for the knee-jerk reaction! I am all for rewarding developers for
their hard work. I just don't want some organization skimming off the top
when you can just as easily contact a developer or organization directly and
donate that way. I guess I need to go find out about the service before
passing judgment.

RE: Money for Projects

2002-04-17 Thread Ganey, Todd

They don't seem to mention how much they take off the top as in: "Affero
takes a bit off the top for our expenses"
but their web site does say "100% of the donation amount is sent to the
designated non-profit"

So which is it?

Re: Money for Projects

2002-04-17 Thread Christopher Reed

100% of the designated amount goes to the beneficiary, and we add a
separate 10% service fee which we hope will someday cover our expenses.
If it's too much...then the market will drive it down. If it's too
little, then we won't be around long or we'll raise it;) If someone can
do a better job at delivering the service, they can click the "(0)" in
any screen of our service, download a tarball of our source, set up a
bunch of machines and compete.-Reed

So I am super clear. The projects get 100% of the donation. Currently
10% of the donation is charged to donor.

You can already donate to thousands of charities (including Apache and
EFF) using JustGive.org. Because they are sponsored, they are able to
send 100% of your donation to the charity and there is no added service
fee.

Your absolutely right you can do that. Most formal organizations inside
Open Source and out have this function and get very little funding from
it. Also, there are many projects that are not formal 501 (c) (3)
organizations and they don't get listed on these sites. Finally for
those individuals running projects that aren't formal organizations who
put PayPal links off their web pages rarely get any traffic to that page
at all.

But all of the above is only part of the problem as most of the time
people only give when there is an event. When help is provided on a
mailing list, the person that got their butt saved is in a state of mind
to give back to the person that helped them. That volunteer providing
the help might support Apache, Horde and Save the Redwoods but the
person giving back in recognition of the support would have no clue
about these being the causes the person providing help supported. We
aren't trying to replace the online donation functions that exist today
off of web sites or through JustGive.org. We just believe that someone
volunteering their knowledge over the web through email could now have
an opportunity to get recognized in a way that is more powerful. Plus,
we allow individuals to get money for their own personal projects in a
way that JustGive.org doesn't offer. At least it doesn't exist today.

As far as the fee, 10% charged to the person giving the money might be a
big amount if we were handling large donations. We feel as though
people with large donations will use other direct donation methods and
use Affero for the $5, $10 type of "thanks" Bank fees alone and the
admin overhead of getting checks to all of the individual projects and
non-profits eat away at this fee big time.

With Affero you can have one or multiple charites your volunteering for
in a your profile. . You can have multiple profiles. So, if your
answering questions on the tomcat list and you want to give to apache,
you can. If your on another list you can have a completely different
profile. In the future we will have many more tools for the volunteer.
In fact we would love feedback from Users like you providing support to
help that development.
