Topband: W1AW 1802.5kHz LP

2019-02-04 Thread Phil Hartwell via Topband

Hi Guys,

I was copying W1AW on 1802.5kHz on the long path at my SR (2141z) today.
I have worked VE1 and W1 many times LP, but never heard W1AW on 160m
before, possibly because of their schedule not coinciding with my SR. It
was audible until 2220z. I will be QRV on 1822.5kHz at my SR tomorrow
and will listen for at least 30 minutes past SR. Sorry no FT8 here.

Re: Topband: 4 SQ To The Ground

2019-02-04 Thread Jeff Blaine
Got tired of the maintenance.   It was about 3-5' and was a pain in the
neck for mowing.  Plus keeping tension on the lines etc was a hassle.

With a 4sq, you pay in the end.  If it's elevated radials, then you pay
over time.   If it's in-ground, you pay up front with the radial field
install but then there is minimal maintenance over time.  But either
way, you pay to play.

It sounds like you had an elevated 4 sq, that you went back to the ground.

Can I ask why you went back to the ground?

Topband: FT8

2019-02-04 Thread Craig Clark
2. Re: FT8 vs other modes

This discussion has been fascinating for the breadth and depth of opinions.

The fundamental fact however is that this is a hobby with a wide range of
options.

FT8 will not be the end of CW operation. It is just another mode.

Life is change. We cannot "live" in the past.

Quoting Sgt Highway from "Heartbreak Ridge," "Improvise, Adapt, Overcome."

Quoting my SGM from college, "Lead, follow, or get out of the way."

Will I get on FT8? Maybe. I have not done RTTY since being in the Army.

Re: Topband: Topband Phenomenon

2019-02-04 Thread Petr Ourednik
Hi all,

I have the same experiences from this weekend during the FOC Marathon on
Topband. I heard the same in case of G's and other coastal stations > it did
not happened with sigs from inland stations... the difference was few S units.

Even more I noticed another "SDE" phenomenon this weekend which sounds strange
to me.
I made short vid here: https://youtu.be/cV3rzlsZbA4

QSK has been useless at that time, it appeared only on TB (nothing on 80m).
North signals came thru fluttered. US sigs raised up at that time for several S
units.
All happened with 300m long Beverages to NA and SA ...no difference.

Anybody knows what happened to me that morning? It disappeared in 1.5hr...
