  [Impact]

   * Allow ubuntu-advantage users to access the extended security
maintenance script with a simple command line tool. This script needs
to hit precise machines and be easy for ubuntu-advantage customers to
enable, thus basefiles was chosen as a home.

  [Test Case]

   * Run ubuntu-advantage, it should print out help
   * Run sudo ubuntu-advantage enable (without sudo it will warn you),
but you need to be an ubuntu-advantage customer to get that token. In the end,
the script simply adds and removes an /etc/apt/sources.list.d entry.
   * you can contact me (d...@canonical.com) if you would like a token for test

  [Regression Potential]

   * Low, this is a new script, not included in any automated startup

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1682193] Re: Mouse acceleration significantly reduced after upgrade to 17.04

2017-04-29 Thread Alejandro R. Mosteo
@loplop, surprisingly in my default installation the only mouse option
related to our problem in settings is labeled as "Mouse Speed" (Below
System Settings -> Mouse & Touchpad). Whatever it does behind the scenes
I can't but guess; in my duplicate bug #1683435 I reported seeing "Accel
Speed" in the capabilities listed by xinput. I too am used to being able
to differentiate between acceleration and precision somehow in other
desktops/OSs.

2017-04-29 Thread clel
@POP I don't know the correct term. For me there is a slider named
"Zeigergeschwindigkeit" in the system settings, which translated means
"pointer speed". But maybe sensitivity is the correct term in English.

At least for me this slider is not working and I can say that the
sensitivity went down after upgrading. Maybe this is the real bug and
not acceleration.

Using xinput I only see a setting for acceleration speed, not
sensitivity. So I can only try to compensate the lacking sensitivity
with more acceleration manually, which is not exactly what I want.

Before upgrading to 17.04, I can run "xset m 1 1" to change my mouse
constant speed and acceleration.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1567697] Re: libcurl is missing http2 support

2017-04-29 Thread Fredrik Jonson
AFAICT http2 support is currently intentionally dropped from curl
because the dependency nghttp2-dev is not in the 'main' archive, but in
the community supported 'universe' archive.

Quoting the curl package changelog:

 curl (7.52.1-4ubuntu1) zesty; urgency=low

  * Merge from Debian unstable. Remaining changes:
- Drop dependencies not in main:
  + Build-Depends: Drop libssh2-1-dev, and libnghttp2-dev.
+ Drop libssh2-1-dev from binary package Depends.
  + debian/control: drop --with-nghttp2

13:07:51 +0200

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/curl/+changelog#detail_curl_7.52.1-4ubuntu1

So, to resolve this issue it would seem that Canonical first must be
convinced to take on official support for the nghttp2 package. Not sure
how we're supposed to do that?

Cheering from the sideline has obviously not worked very well for this
issue so far. :)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1682193] Re: Mouse acceleration significantly reduced after upgrade to 17.04

Maybe the problem is that since the upgrade xinput does not offer the
corresponding option for setting speed/sensitivity resulting in a not
working slider. Don't know whether there was such option before, though.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1686081] Re: If -synaptics is installed, GNOME Mouse & Touchpad Settings doesn't work

2017-04-29 Thread Paul White
When testing both Xubuntu 17.10 daily ISOs (20170428) I found that tap
and double tap on the touchpad to not be working. Scrolling was fine.

Installing -synaptics re-enabled the tap/double tap functionality after
logging out and back in again.

Title:

  work

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I'm splitting this issue off from LP: #1685542 (which made xserver-
xorg-input-all no longer recommend xserver-xorg-input-synaptics) for
  tracking the remaining issues.

gnome-control-center only supports libinput. If xserver-xorg-input-
synaptics is installed (because it's used by some desktops which
haven't been ported to libinput yet), synaptics overrides libinput.
That makes gnome-control-center's Mouse & Touchpad settings panel only
show basic settings and important configurations don't work.

  Questions
  -
  1. Which desktops/apps still need -synaptics?
  - Unity
  - Xfce?
  - LXDE? LXQt?
All the other major desktops have already been ported (LP: #1417980)

  2. Can these apps be ported or removed before 18.04 LTS is released?

  3. Can the desktops be ported and how bad is it if they are not ported
and -synaptics is no longer available?

  4. If -synaptics can't be removed completely from 18.04 LTS, does it
make sense to have gnome-control-center Conflicts: xserver-xorg-input-
  synaptics?

  5. Is there any other way we can fix this conflict?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 482080] Re: Dovecot's apparmor profile breaks dovecot-antispam

2017-04-29 Thread Christian Boltz
I'd even recommend to restrict it a bit more:

  owner /tmp/antispam-mail*/ rw,
  owner /tmp/antispam-mail*/* rwkl,

sendmail might be a candidate for a child profile. Such a (maybe too
generous) profile already exists in the dovecot-lda profile, so cleaning
it up and removing permissions that are not needed for "just" sending a
mail might be a good idea.

I won't object if you provide a generic sendmail profile that we can Px
into (feel free to use the child profile in dovecot-lda as a base), but
that needs much more testing before shipping and enforcing it in the
default setup.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1681513] Re: Ubuntu 17.04: New privacy feature in NetworkManager stops some WiFi adapters from working (mac address randomization)

2017-04-29 Thread Jeremy
Some users may need to disable wifi power management with

sudo sed -i 's/wifi.powersave = 3/wifi.powersave = 2/'
/etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf

The command is one line and I know some Ralink USB devices work poorly
with power management enabled

Ubuntu 17.04: New privacy feature in NetworkManager stops some WiFi
adapters from working (mac address randomization)

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  According to

https://blogs.gnome.org/thaller/2016/08/26/mac-address-spoofing-in-networkmanager-1-4-0/
there is a new privacy feature in the new version of NetworkManager.
This privacy feature can cause some USB WiFi adapters to stop working
while they used to work with older versions of NetworkManager (Ubuntu 16.10
or older).

The purpose of this privacy feature is to get your computer to report a new
random MAC address whenever you connect to a WiFi network.
This privacy feature is especially useful when you connect to public WiFi
networks, so that the operators cannot identify you when you connect multiple
times.

The downside of this privacy feature is that some USB WiFi adapters misbehave
when NetworkManager tries to change their MAC address repeatedly.
The result is that those USB WiFi adapters cannot connect anymore to the WiFi
 network.

  Original report follows:

My Panda USB wi-fi adapter works just fine on 16.10, but when I try to
connect to my wi-fi router in 17.04, GNOME network manager reports
"Connection failed." I did some tinkering, and noticed that my MAC
address for my wifi adapter, according to GNOME, is DIFFERENT every
time I make it forget my wifi settings and try to reconnect. Weird,
right? Any leads on a possible fix or work-around?

I'm running the latest beta of Ubuntu GNOME 17.04, kernel
  4.10.0-19-generic, GNOME 3.24.0.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1666676] Re: Install tracker by default

2017-04-29 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Hi, here's a quick update. Nautilus 3.24 is in Ubuntu 17.10 Alpha now. I
dropped ubuntu_tracker_only_on_GNOME.patch because it does not make
sense any more (it enabled some features based on whether GNOME was the
current desktop).

Nautilus does have several features that will only work if tracker is
installed. The biggest 2 features for Ubuntu I see are:
- File search in GNOME Shell's Activities Overview (GNOME's equivalent of
Unity's Dash)
- I'm told that search is much, much faster in indexed directories and that
people will complain that search is slow after removing type-ahead if tracker
is not installed.

My understanding is that every other GNOME distro includes tracker by
default (except maybe Gentoo).

Does tracker have bugs? Sure. Do people hate tracker for various
reasons? Yes. But I haven't seen anyone in this discussion point to a
current, specific, actionable bug reports where tracker is causing
significant problems.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1682193] Re: Mouse acceleration significantly reduced after upgrade to 17.04

2017-04-29 Thread POP
My only experience is with xfce desktop and I can confirm that from version 16
at least, mouse sensitivity and acceleration settings didn't work correctly.
Generally it was either too slow or too fast. I was happy with too much
acception so I didn't complain. But they have updated the xorg server so
something may have gone wrong. And I don't think we are going to hear a lot of
complaints about this.
Neither sensitivity nor acceleration do anything at all in this version.
Everything is just constant. And certainly I am not going to mess with system
packages to solve this.
@clel Geschwindigkeit is just velocity or speed. For acceleration they should
have used Beschleunigung. The sensitivity adjusts the relationship between
physical mouse movement and the pointer movement. How precise it is. The
acceleration increases the ratio between pointer movement and mouse movement
depending on the speed or Geschwindigkeit of the mouse itself. In other words
it translates mouse speed into pointer acceleration or Beschleunigung. So you
can call it speed if you mean mouse movement, but acceleration if you mean
pointer movement. Sensitivity and acceleration settings are distinct and I
cannot see how they can combine them unless they just discard one, probably the
sensitivity, and keep accelerate and rename it to speed or Geschwindigkeit.

Bug description:
When connecting to a VPN that provides both a default route over IPv4
and IPv6, but only DNS servers over IPv4, you can end up with the IPv4
DNS servers set up as "split DNS". When that happens, the user is left
  without a working DNS configuration.

See the attached log file for an example.

I think the cause is that the patch for avoiding split DNS on VPNs
with default routes[1] stops looking when it finds the first VPN
configuration with a default route. If that configuration happens to
be the IPv6-side of the VPN connection, then it will still add the
  IPv4 configuration with split DNS.

A workaround is to simply add a IPv6 DNS server to the configuration
in addition to the IPv4 DNS servers. In that case, the IPv6 DNS server
  is added without split DNS.

This has been tested with both Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and Xubuntu 14.04.

  Package versions (on Xubuntu 14.04):
   network-manager 0.9.8.8-0ubuntu7
   network-manager-openvpn 0.9.8.2-1ubuntu4

Bug description:
During configuring of a VPN, Network Manager normally allows you to
specify additional DNS servers that are located on the virtual private
  network:

  http://neartalk.com/ss/2016-10-16_001_601x625.png

However, in Ubuntu 16.10 the network manager is ignoring the
additional DNS that I've specified at the dialog I've linked above.

Normally, after connecting to a VPN (where additional DNS servers are
specified), the command (below) will show (in addition to your local
DNS servers) the remote DNS servers (located on the VPN):

nmcli dev show | grep DNS

Unfortunately, in Ubuntu 16.10, this is not working. Consequently, I
cannot resolve remote computers by their computer-name, which is very
inconvenient considering that I have over 100 Remmina connections set
to resolve by name. Right now, I have to manually discover the IP
addresses of the remote computer-names before connecting to the
  computers with Remmina.

I've confirm this issue on both OpenVPN and Cisco vpnc connections.
The additional DNS server are not making it here:

nmcli dev show | grep DNS

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1666676] Re: Install tracker by default

2017-04-29 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Without tracker, Videos in your Downloads/ or Music/ or Videos/ folders
won't automatically show up on the main page of the Videos app (totem).
Instead, you have to click the + button and explicitly add them.

Bug description:
For Nautilus' built-in search to not be very slow, Nautilus needs to

This is especially important since it's being seriously proposed for
Ubuntu 17.10 that we drop the "type-ahead search" patch that reverted
the removal of that feature by Nautilus years ago. (LP: #181)

To not cripple Ubuntu GNOME, it was previously decided to let Nautilus
build against tracker but not use that functionality on Unity. See
  this patch:

  https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-

This bug is requesting that patch be dropped and the extra tracker
components be allowed into main and installed by default in Unity.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1666676] Re: Install tracker by default

2017-04-29 Thread Khurshid Alam
@Carlos Garnacho

I have tested this on a low-end laptops first with no tracker and then
with tracker installed with default configuration (and there our problem
lies.) The default configuration is just unacceptable.

1. Why does tracker index bzr, vendor, pycache folders by default? I put
my git projects inside documents. You can literally see that with
tracker daemon -f. Also, It should ignore any directory starting with
"." by default

2. There are many other configuration available in Gsettings which
aren't exposed in GUI.

3. I configure following things:
-- enable-writeback false
-- index-optical-discs false
-- index-on-battery false
-- index-removable-devices false
-- ignored-directories ['core-dumps', 'CVS', 'lost+found', 'po', 'vendor',
'.git']
-- ignore-stop-words true
-- ignore-numbers true
-- max-words-to-index 1000
-- removable-days-threshold 3 ? (I don't not understand this)

After this the system is somewhat working well. There are no aggressive
indexing. All files can still be searched from shell. Documents, Bijiben
etc works without any problems.

There are many options which can be disabled during compilation. For
example extractor metadata for ps.gz, gif, iso, xps, abw seems pretty
useless to me (who use it and why?). These can be disabled during
compilation.

I will keep testing but I believe tracker can be enabled in Ubuntu with
proper default settings keeping it at absolute minimal level.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1231550] Re: battery status indicator shows 'estimating'

2017-04-29 Thread htrex
I'm seeing the the battery indicator stuck on the estimating message on
a Dell XPS 9560 using Ubuntu 16.04.2 with 4.10.0-20-generic
#22~16.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Thu Apr 20 17:43:29 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64
GNU/Linux.

The Dell XPS, as the Thinkpad of the OP, has a charge limiter to prolong
the battery life in the years. It can be set on a range from 55 % to
100% of the battery capacity.

upower reports the state as "charging" but the energy-rate is just
0,0114 W.

I think that when the rate is so low, detecting a trickle charging it's
more a fact than a guess.

This is the upower dump (some unimportant bluetooth external devices
removed):

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1687212] [NEW] ~16 GB written to disk from power on till lightdb login screen?

2017-04-29 Thread TomaszChmielewski
Public bug reported:

After each system boot, iostat -m shows that the kernel has written
around 16 GB to SSD disk:

avg-cpu: %user %nice %system %iowait %steal %idle
   9.100.00 10.062.380.00 78.47

Device:tpsMB_read/sMB_wrtn/sMB_readMB_wrtn
sda 702.3216.91 1495.65182 16108
dm-0808.3615.64 1495.65168 16108
dm-1786.8215.39 0.01165 0
dm-2 10.21 0.21 1495.64 2 16107

It's a fresh Ubuntu 17.04 installation with rootfs installed on LUKS.

/proc/diskstats (https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/ABI/testing
/procfs-diskstats) seem to be matching the output of "iostat -m".

Please note that dm-2 is 16 GB swap (the system has 16 GB RAM):

$ ls /dev/mapper/ -l
total 0
crw--- 1 root root 10, 236 Apr 30 01:53 control
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   7 Apr 30 01:53 sda3_crypt -> ../dm-0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   7 Apr 30 01:53 ubuntu--vg-root -> ../dm-1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   7 Apr 30 01:53 ubuntu--vg-swap_1 -> ../dm-2

$ cat /proc/swaps
FilenameTypeSizeUsedPriority
/dev/dm-2 partition 164945880
-1

So what seems to happen, is that the OS overwrites the whole encrypted swap
partition during bootup.

This is very worrying, given that it's SSD disk!

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1516531] Re: Fullscreen Freeze.

Title:
  Fullscreen Freeze.

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Related?:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/692405/ubuntu-15-10-unity-freezes-after-escaping-full-screen-video
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1509622

I've been having cases of unusual screen behavior, particularly when Kodi 16
is being used (maybe it's just a Kodi thing).
There have been times before when coming out of fullscreen video using either
Chrome or Kodi would drop me to a console screen with no input.
I think I would be able to kill the gnome session in tty1.

Now, after a bios upgrade as well as the latest display manager and kernel
update, Kodi has frozen in fullscreen a couple of times and yet audio will
still play from Kodi.
I created the bug report in tty1.

I've also been noticing that if I pause a Kodi video, other non-Kodi
applications may not update their window content.
For example, I may be in a webpage in Chrome and I try to mousewheel scroll,
yet not see the scrolling effect. Or I will click on a different tab and the
window doesn't show the switch. BUT, if I continue playing the Kodi video,
Chrome will update it's screen, and if I switch back to the tab I scrolled, the
scroll will have already occurred.

I will say that I have at least not had a fullscreen GUI crash me out
  to console.

Another peculiarity is when booting Ubuntu, I used to be able to press ESC to
view the kernel/system booting output, but now it just shows a black screen
with a cursor.
The downside to that in 15.04 was I'd lose my mouse cursor when the GUI login
screen came up.

Let me know what other output you'd like (or whatever test you'd like me to
try) "when" it happens again.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1686081] Re: If -synaptics is installed, GNOME Mouse & Touchpad Settings doesn't work

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu

Title:
If -synaptics is installed, GNOME Mouse & Touchpad Settings doesn't

Mouse flickering and disappearing near the top of screen

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
So I'm not sure this is an xorg bug, I couldn't figure out what xorg
is. But I recently upgraded to ubuntu 16.10 and started seeing this
bug where my mouse will flicker and disappear when near the top of the
screen. It still works clicking-wise. It also seems to be especially
severe when using Google Chrome, where it completely disappears and
flickers the entire time while mousing over the menu uptions (i.e the
close button, the tabs etc...). However recently I noticed this also
happens when google chrome is off, though it flickers much less.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1687015] Re: 229_4ubuntu17 removes group write permissions from /var/log

2017-04-29 Thread madbiologist
Which version of Ubuntu is this occurring on?

** Changed in: systemd (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Incomplete

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu
Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to systemd in Ubuntu.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1687015

Title:
229_4ubuntu17 removes group write permissions from /var/log

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Steps to reproduce (time senstive, once lxd image is updated with
  4ubuntu17, I expect this won't work)

  lxc launch ubuntu:x test
lxc exec test -- ls -ld /var/log # shows 775 perms
lxc exec test -- apt update
lxc exec test -- apt-cache policy systemd
lxc exec test -- apt install systemd
lxc exec test -- ls -ld /var/log # shows 755 permissions

straceing the apt install shows no chmod calls to /var/log (only
  /var/log/apt.log, as you'd expect)

This means syslog cannot write new files in /var/log, and had broken
some production logging for us as a result.
